If you do not like P.G. 13 you do not like the Melvins.
Well truth be told i havent listened to it anywhere near as much as the rest (perhaps only 3 times) since i was so off put by it. Im sure it will grow on me. Of course not everything the band do i like. Parts of Stag annoy me and a few other things here and there (Colossus anyone?) but does that make me less of a fan? P.Gx3 is not bad music per say, just not the kind of thing i like or choose to listen to. Actually that reminds me of something John Peel once remarked when commenting upon his favourite band The Fall. He said "The Fall always give you what you want...and sometimes what you dont want but they're The Fall."

Stag is perfect in every way! Well except that it is missing a proper recording of  Specimen. :(

That PG13 song is a bit of a laugh.

I also like the song that has the dog howling at the end..........well not the actual song but the part where the poor pups is howling.

The only complete songs I like are My Generation and The Water Glass.........although Water Glass has awesome vocals the lyrics are pure cheese and you kind of feel short changed at the end because you think it's going to drop into a friggin PUNISHING rhythm after the vocal square-off.....instead it just ends.

Evil New War God has to be the most banal riff Melvins have ever produced......it's pure Nu-Metal worship.

Yes.

Yep......Stag rules. It's the ultimate album to start someone on who hasn't heard the Melvins.

After reading the review i don't quite know what everyone's problem is? I mean they gave this album 3 and a half stars out of 5.

I would've given it 2 stars out of 5.

My problem is that the description of the album doesn't sound anything like album at all. Not even remotely. I honestly think they wrote the review based on the samples posted on Amazon.com or something. I seriously think they're trying to pass off a review of a record they haven't even heard.

^ srsly

I think they are trolling with the review.

Well to be fair the review is only a paragraph or two......which would be about the right length for the snippets.

Juan what is your problem with this new lineup?

The songs? Dale being a completely different drummer? The riffs? The vocals?

Juan what is your problem with this new lineup?

The last 3 albums just sound rather generic for the most part............TBSM being the most guilty of this. Obviously each album has some absolute belters but the fact of the matter is the last 3 albums just don't stand up to older Melvins.

The new line-up is 4 people......everyone knows 3 peice bands are the most powerful. Melvins more than anyone proved that point in the past.

Dale does not need another drummer along side him and Buzzo does not need another vocalist along side him.

Personally I like to look at this BB/Melvins thing as a collaboration....... as for me Melvins have never been a generic sounding rock band.

BB are a great band by themselves and don't need the Melvins........and vice versa.

3 albums of this collaboration is enough. Never before has 3 Melvins albums in a row sounded so radically the same.

Anyway we're going around in circles here.....

I don't think reviewers should be allowed to use star ratings. Love it, hate it, whatever, just say something insightful or don't bother imo.

For those that are too lazy to click the link, here is the review in question....

These expressionist metal muckos have always jammed a little bubblegum in their bristles, dating back to the punked-out Cars and Kiss covers of their earliest days. But King Buzzo, et al.'s 19th studio album is downright sugary, a sludge-pop romp that mostly plays like a distortion-charred version of the Bay City Rollers or Sweet. Their double-drummer lineup is more playful as well, developing colors other than "bludgeon," while indulging in cartoonish free jazz and devilishly funky Adam Ant pummel.

Who do you compare the Melvins to as far as their sound and their songcrafting? The only one you can compare them with is themselves and that is not objective and fair. So what if the past two albums are similar to this one? Ask yourself this question, what other band out there has albums that even sound like this one or the past two? I am pleased with these albums and the way they sound. Granted they are a bit more straightforward on some tracks that in than their past offerings but even the straightforward stuff is not boring nor an indication that the creative mind of Buzz is running empty. I think some fans are being too fickle and making selfish demands on how the band should sound. This is another exciting and dynamic chapter in the Melvins experience and taken as a whole has been great and continues to be.

Now I admit that at first I was not too impressed with PGx3, but after hearing the back story on the track and taking into consideration most of Pigs Of The Roman Empire and most of Honky, it doesn't sound all that different from those albums.

Also, Evil New War God does NOT have nu-metal riffs either.

What's a "mucko"?

I have a theory that every professional review since the post Atlantic days has gone something like this.

Boss, "Jack Mehoff, we need you to review the new albums this week."

Jack Mehoff, "Ok, I'll review the Melvins.  Weren't they that band that had a connection with Nirvana but weren't as big so they obviously aren't as good?  Oh yea!  I liked Honey Bucket and that Kiss cover.  I think that album was Houdini."

-Insert comment about grunge

-Give album 6 or 7 out of 10 despite only hearing a couple of times while blogging
