differences in songs live vs. album

I'm listening to a live recording from 2002 right now and it got me thinking-Based on this recording, Melvins Vs. Minneapolis, and other live records from the Kevin era, I think they generally play a lot of songs faster now with the Big Business guys in the band, than they did with Kevin. I feel like having two drummers adds to the momentum, and they're often playing on the front side of the beat.

a history of bad men live is faster. i dig live more then i do the album version. now when i listen to the album version i want to sing it double speed. i cant wait to own that sugar daddy split.

I hate how they cut out the second "verse"  (if that's what you want to call it) from Black Stooges live nowadays. Ooh, that bugs me! At least they didn't do that when they first started playing it live.

Skin Horse: Really don't like playing the first part "properly." Maybe they think it's too obvious or something.

Pigs of the Roman Empire: Its like a highlight reel of the album version. They miss out all the ambient stuff and that interesting riff that comes between the two "main" riffs. Still tears, though.

Jew Bow Flower Head: Buzz sings it like he can't sing

Queen: Faster. I think they're trying to make it more exiting. Honestly, I this is just a shitty, boring song. The riffs nice, but after they've played it 3 or 4 times you get the idea.

Collosus of Destiny: More of a conceptual sibling than an attempt to recreate the recorded version.

Pearl Bomb: Sinister, incessant menace becomes TOTAL ROCK FURY.

Generally they don't fuck around with texture as much live. Or rather, Buzz sees what weird noises he can get out his guitar & amp rather than what weird noises he can make with effects pedals, other instruments & a recording studio.

I get chills at the part halfway through the album version where it's just the bass line with some ambient distortion that slowly evaporates into the accompanying drums and guitar riff. I doubt even the melvins could pull that off live.

I actually  forgot about that one with the killer drum intro and the barely audible vocals!

Like someone already mentioned Honey Bucket isn't that great live. On one hand because they play it too fast, on the other hand because the studio version is just perfect.

Also, when they play that song, it is often performed rather sloppy. I think they don't really like playing that song because it's such a fan favorite. Just like some other bands which are sick of reapeating their "greatest hit" over and over.

you'd think! i know a lot of bands want to say they only do stuff that makes them happy, but complain about critics when they come out of the garage. don't come out of the garage!

I remember in 2004 they played The Bloat live and the second half sounded completely different than the studio version.
