buzzo used a rat on bullhead for sure but i don't think he used a rat on ozma

If anyone here has heard Ozma on vinyl, it doesnt sound near as bad as the cd version. Its almost as if they didnt bother re-mastering it for CD or something. On vinyl you have to master the recording so the frequencies arent as extreme or you'd have to have a huge slab of vinyl, and your record player has an equalizer that adds those frequencies back in.

Quote from: blipntimeit doesnt seem as if Dale plays a straight pattern for any more than 2 or 3 seconds. Just drum fills the whole fuckin' way through. Annoying.

oh so you want straight patterns, huh?  yeah, and a radio hit would sure be swell!
his sense of timing is one of the things that makes dale such a special drummer.   it's like saying, "buzz doesn't make any sense when he sings, just jibberish the whole fucking way through.  annoying."

anaconda

I'll second that! the beauty of dale IS that he plays around the beat, its his style to do anything but a straight 4/4. it's called lead drums, and it's dale's legacy.

blipntime

no its way more random than on their later albums. you have to have something to establish the beat before you play around it. he's a great drummer now but he wasnt that great on ozma to solo the whole time.
i am a big fan of dale's drumming. it was just too busy on ozma.

Vcavallo

i disagree.

also, you don't have to "have something to play around it"  you can play around whatever the fuck you want.  don't be so rigid and flat

I'll second Dudbean's seconding of Anaconda's seconding.

klump

the only thing i miss is a cover version of Just what i needed :)

Quote from: DudbeanI guess I can see what people mean when they say they don't like the production, but to be honest, until you guys mentioned it I didn't even think about it. When I think about Ozma I automatically hear Vile in my head, and that song kicks me in the teeth every time, so I can't complain about the album at all.

The bass does sound tinny when the guitar cuts out, but fortunately that's not very often. And the drums are so 'live' and clear that you can hear everything that Dale is doing, which I love. Three thumbs up from me.

OZMA? FUCKING BRILLIANT!
Its maybe not as heavy as GPT, but the sound is pretty interesting,,,,... not many albums sound like this

and I waited a long time till someone mentioned VILE!!!
one of my all time FAVORITES!!!
one of the best melvinss songs IMO!
KLASSICK!
the drums are just genius, minimal but crushing

blipntime

ozma is definitely superior to glpt. and songwise its up there with any of the melvins releases. but the melvins didnt sound like that live. listen to the same songs on your choice live....mindblowing.

i think it just needs to be remastered.

That's such a great track. I love the way it starts in 3/4, then "stutters" into 4/4.

Jack Mort

Was this ever released singley i.e. without Gluey Porch Treatments tacked on? Thanks.
Accidents may happen but it's only rocks and rolling

anaconda

Yes. By Boner records in '89

Jack Mort

Is it the same cover and whatnot as the other?
