well...

if melvins were intentionally out to simultaneously confuse and delight the half-full hordern pavilion last night, they succeeded. as i looked around, i could see people standing with their eyes closed, deep in trance as the sludge grew and grew. i could also see people looking completely fucking confused, even disgusted.

this was my second melvins experience, and was so much better than the first. that was when they supported tool at the entertainment centre. now, that was an amazing show (they blew tool off the stage), but the crushing weight of last night's set made it tenfold more exciting.

plus, it was great to have patton provide extra vocals during 'the bit' and 'night goat', a la 'millenium monsterwork'.

tomahawk and fantomas were both incredible also, but it was melvins who left the most lasting impression in my mind.

in all my excitement, however, i've forgotten the set list. did anyone happen to note it down? (under normal circumstances i memorise setlists, but i was a little overwhelmed at seeing fantomas, tomahawk and melvins all in the one night that once i got home i could not recall any of the bands' sets).

jay katz was cool, some people got it, others were pissed off. lots of angry drunken metal heads may have had jokes go over their heads perhaps. people should look for the album by darth vegas cause it's great by the way..
i thought fantomas were a bit ordinary. the new songs sounded interesting though. maybe it was the girl screaming everytime mike patton a)moved b)made a sound that pissed me off....
seemed like melvins blew fantomas away. they played the bit and night goat with mike patton. when the heavy part on night goat kicked in all the lights went red, and the crowd were into it..was fucking cool. i didn't pay attention to setlists, off the top of my head...the bit, night goat, let it all be, revolve, oven..something off HAT..and going blind. probably others, can't remember. the last song went for ages..was slow, heavy and noisy. people were starting to get a bit pissed i think..
tomahawk were okay, not really heaps into them. the guitar seemed a bit low in the mix, and the vocals too loud. the effects on vocals is nice as an effect but gets old quickly when it's constant. i was standing under the P.A for tomahawk, and at one stage there was some feedback that got right into my brain. i think it started beating at the same pulse rate of the noise..that's all i remember of tomahawk.

They played shevil too. Just before they launched into Hung Bunny/Roman Dog Bird. and They played With teeth
I was amazed at how boring Tomahawk were. Have been hanging to see them since their inception and was dissapointed. Compressed to the max.
Fantomas were UNREAL. That first track was killer. So was ALL the new stuff.
Was a bit dissapointing though to go to THree melvins gigs with all the same basic setlists. I was led to believe they had a plethora of material to draw on and frequently did.
Their set at Ding Dong was shorter than their geek show ones.No Egg Nogg or bull head or honky or crybaby . Kevin told me mate they were gonna do eyes flys and they didn't. That is just cruel!

Anyway i wil stop whinging. They all rocked fucking hard.
