This one is hard for me. Other than Prick, these two albums showcase the Melvins at their most experimental. Forget about the prejudice some have against Pigs... because of Lustmord and post your thoughts on which one has the edge over the other.

Rex Irae

Honky definitely for me... if the only song on Honky was "air breather deep in the arms of morpheus", I would still choose it. Not that I don't like POTRE but that one song is just so sweet.

Honky.
Pigs is big evil empty space, but it lacks subtlety. It has the same tone and atmosphere throughout. Honky is a haunted house of quiet negativity. They All Must Be Slaughtered and Harry Lauder's Walking Stick Tree are firmly grounded on Earth, but it's a decaying withered heath where the moon burns green and the toxic wind never lets up. Pitfalls in Serving Warrants and Grin begin with metal and industrial riffs respectively, but quickly switch gears into beautifully played, creepy quiet bad-acid jazz. Pigs is nice, but Honky is more various in styles. It's the black flipside to Stag's sunshine.
Also melvins is gay cuz some of their songs are just noise, i tell you this so you all don't buy albums and find out only one two songs is good on them.

Pigs, I think it shows the Melvins are about 5 years ahead of their time again. I don't see why and where Pigs lacks subtlety. I agree with the other two your (blacksanta's) description of Honky is pretty clever  but you can't seem to motivate where Pigs 'fails' (aah... I'm pretty sure you can actually, although let's not rap about failure). I listened to Pigs yesterday and it's pretty damn eclectic and gives, me at least, a great metaphor of the level - although I prefer not to talk about levels, maybe state is a better term - the Melvins are currently at.

I find this _____ vs ______ stuff pretty pointless, but if it results in posts like this I'm all for it. Keep posting, blacksanta. "the moon burns green" is worth the price of admission, alone.

As for these ________vs_______ polls, you can have that opinion, but why did you even bother coming here? Its interesting to me what people would say if you put up Melvins vs Melvins. Far more interesting than putting Melvins albums against say Slayer. Melvins would always come out on top because of bias. With Melvins vs Melvins bias is thrown out the door.

I think he meant that it's pointless because the albums are pretty different and in some respects it is hard to compare, but he likes the descriptions?

Or maybe not.

Sure, polls suck and lists suck. But sometimes things that suck are fun.

I disagree. I think Honky and Pigs... are quite comparable. Save for the humorous track on Honky. Both have a dark atmosphere. Both are experimental. Both have heavy and raw moments. As a whole, I think Pigs has the edge though. But that does not negate my love for Honky.
