I like this thread.   it brings up a subject that I've been pouring over for the last month or so:

or: melvins; you ain't born liking them

  I would like to present to you a theory I have created based upon roughly one year of research.  the theory is as follows: the human mind is not genetically encoded to enjoy the music of the band MELVINS.  instead, the pleasure derived from listening to MELVINS is gained on micro-evolution lane.     my guinea pig, my daughter.        now to the actual research.     my daughter, who as you know by how much I carry on and on about it, is roughly one year old.  I have been playing the music of the melvins to her since the first month of her existance.  she listens to melvins almost every day  in my vehicle as I transport her to and from her day care.   I always make a point to check her reaction and facial expressions as she listens intently to whatever selection I have made for the day.  one day ozma, one day (A)SA, one day the bootlicker, lately NWB, etc.     she never seems to have any positive reaction to any of it.   she just basically sits there with this somewhat puzzled look on her face.  like she is making no connection what-so-ever that this is music she is listening to.    then, at her first birthday she was givin some strange little Fisher Price radio-ma-jiggy that plays classic nursery rhyme songs when she pushes the large orange button. the first time she did this she looked at me with a large grin and began to move her body to the music. I was amazed that she instictually new that music was to be danced to.  and she was obviously enjoying herself.   therefore I deducted that the pleasure of music is genetically placed in a human before birth.  but in order for that pleasure desire to move on to such things as MELVINS it must first take the path you and I took.  starting with "the teddy bear's picnic"  moving on to popular music, moving on to (example) heavy metal or punk, moving on to MELVINS.   this process usually takes a mimimum 15 to 16 years.

so be proud chrisandre.   by my theory your child is more evolutionarilly advanced by a good 5 years more than other children his same age.

I would have to guess that the Melvins music is to "busy" to be enjoyed by the one year old mind.  Simple beats, and less "grating" tones.  Give her time.

Thats pretty cool it was a choice he made. I know a few people with kids who they tried their best to influence listening to bands they liked.   When their kids started listening to crappy pop radio bands, and Eminem, they got pretty upset.  I just said to them "did you like what your parents wanted you to like?" They would usually say atleast I didn't listen to that rap crap. I then stated "well that rap crap is his rock and roll because you can't stand it, its something you can't understand or refuse to so he embraces it, its the same thing when you listened to music you're parents probably thought was mindless untalented crap too"

But damn a Melvins CD is a pretty cool choice for a first album

It sure beats Elton Johns greatest hits which was my first record purchased at 10 years old too.

I pretty much agree with that statement.  Although my first LPs of Alice Cooper, Led Zeppelin, Sabbath, and Neil Young were my father's, a lot of his other favs (Crosby, Still, & Nash, Santana, Jackson Brown, etc.) I still can't stand.  I wonder what my son will like when he gets older, and if he'll be thinking "goddamnit dad, I wish you'd stop playing that Carcass and put in some Justin Timberlake".  I really don't care if he doesn't like metal or hip-hop, but I REALLY hope he'll get into some of the jazz masters (Coltrane, Miles, Parker, Monk, Dizzy, Rollins, etc.).  Oh well, that's why god invented head-phones.
