There is a great article on hipster culture in the new issue of Adbusters. I live in Silver Lake, Los Angeles. This is a hipster mecca. I laugh at people that actually spend time, money and energy on playing dress up like hipsters do. It is fine to dress like a certain person (crustie, hesher, punker, skater, jock, hippie, goth, nazi, cop, priest, clown) when your in high school, but c'mon! In your 20s and 30s?

As far as who goes to Melvins shows? I don't care as long as they don't mess up the show for me and the Melvins are making a living.

I don't really think the Melvin's are making more accesible music.

NWB and ASA are much more 'accessable' than say Bootlicker or Prick or Lysol.

If Melvins release another album like Honky all these hanger-ons will drop like flies.

or pigs of the roman empire or bullhead or colluses of destiny or ozma or maggot or hostile ambient takeover or stag or the solo's or....

the new albums are definately more "rocky" and not so hard on the ears for non-ordaned listeners, making them much more appealing for the general population. through my own experience when ive played the newies in front of whoever, the responce is quite positive. can't say that about many of their other albums. just makin a point. the melvins are getting popular, their last two albums show off their skill and have not been in any way obtusive or extremist. given their cultish image that theyve developed over the years, did anyone not expect to see a new demographic to appear? it'll be interesting to see what direction they take from here.

I can't believe "Is this a good thing or a bad thing" is even a question! Bring em on I say! More money for the Melvins is good, they deserve it. The Melvins opened up a whole world of music to me.  Plus, if there are a lot of new fans, I bet Buzz will up and put out some ultra-off putting record, or something a bit more extreme.  At the "worst", maybe he'll re-record Bullhead or something to capitalize.

At one point, we were all new Melvins fans, weren't we? I'm sure some folks were scoffing at 15 year old Turnacus showing up for the HAT tour. 

Two more points:

1. In Upstate NY, I notice the guido phenomenon didn't take.  Probably because we're so damn poor, though not lacking in italians or douche bags.

2. I could care less about hipsters.  This isn't the first time in history young people have had clothing styles, music tastes and general culture attached to them.  I also went to a pretty large urban university with a prominent art school, so there were plenty of them. I just thought they were city kids being cool.

In terms of hipsterness, the world is divided in two camps: hipsters and anti-hipsters, but those who are labeled as hipsters by the anti-hipsters will never acknowledge they are hipsters, so therefore hipsters don't really exist, only in the eyes of the anti-hipster.

That, and the Melvins always gain new popularity, as new people will always discover the Melvins. At the same time they'll also always lose fans, who might be disappointed with the latest album or the new line up.

Nothing new really.

it has never been a problem for me to know who likes the Melvins or not.I don't like to make statistics, but it's undeniable that they are better known right now than in the past and that's physiological for so many motives which doesn't interest me to analyze.btw,when i'm at a melvins show(unfortunately that's happened few times ) i'm too concentrated on the band to realize what kind of dude i have next to me and however I would not like to judge him.obviously,happened to me to talk with guys who say they're huge Melvins fans and that the Melvins are an historical band(stoner-grunge band ),but they don't like or don't really know Lysol,Bullhead,Gluey Porch,Ozma etc.in that case i guess that,as in all the things, is a matter of culture

I've noticed an insurgence  of members here lately, but I suppose that can be compared to population growth.  People die, people are born.  Melvins fans come and go.  But theer are some of us that are Highlanders.

I didn't notice anything but the usual crowd at the Seattle and Portland shows.  I think Buzz probably went on FOX for A ) Publicity, and B ) he's intelligent and wants to voice his opinion.  But how he got to be on FOX is another question.

Them being in Juno was cool.  Actually, I haven't seen it, but everyone at work knows I love the Melvins, and when they saw the movie, they all came and told me.  I already knew by then, so it wasn't that big of a deal.

I guess I find this no weirder than when I heard they were picked up by Atlantic. 

Btw, where the hell have you been Jamie?  Out there in the 'normal' world?

i've been really busy, more busy than i have in my entire life, this board has always been in my heart though!

this melvins show was the first time i got to drink at one, i didn't drink much but i got a good buzz going bc i had to drive my friend back.  it was his first melvins show and he got wasted.  he kept screaming "this is a sausage fest,"  i don't think the other people much enjoyed him.  there was this guy with long hair behind me, i was just right front center and he kept whipping his nasty oily sweaty hair on me, while trying to literally push me out of my position.  it pisses me off still that you can't be up front and stand still and watch your favorite band play without some douche crushing you, it's the closest most people at these shows have come to a homosexual experience.  all shows are like that though.  i only weigh 111 pounds so it sucks more!  i even saw some guy bring his kids to the show!  he was really close to me holding them, those kids (1 was like 2 years) didn't get scared or anything though, with it being so loud and pushy, pretty phenomenal- i'm guessing this wasn't their first show.
it was really cool when they pulled out eye flys and boris, i specifically tried to distance myself from looking up any shows so i could be surprised at the set list, since the melvins don't usually switch up their set list much.
i wish they'd record that version of boris!  jareds throat bass singing was quite a cool sight.
it was sad because i didn't have enough money to buy any merch...i know i'm going to regret it
