p.s. personally I think down is a legitimately talented band, you can't
fault a band with a member of Crowbar in it.I believe the Melvins
have actually name-checked Crowbar in the past, and may have even
shared the bill with them at some point.

The band is OK, it's their singer that sucks.

I'VE BEEN A CROWBAR FAN FOR A WHILE NOW, AND FOR THE TYPE OF MUSIC THAT'S PLAYED WITH THE TYPE OF MESSAGES THAT ARE CONVEYED IN THE MUSIC, I PERSONALLY THINK HIS VOCALS GO GOOD WITH THE MUSIC.  HE'S NOT GOING TO WIN ANY CONTESTS SINGING A CAPELLA IN THE NEAR FUTURE, BUT NEITHER WILL NEIL FROM CLUTCH, WHO I THINK HAS A PERFECT VOICE FOR CLUTCH'S MUSIC.

Half of the problem with Phil is that he stops the show 18 times during the show to tell everyone how cool he is and then take a 10 min. break to smoke a joint and then talk some more 'bout how he fucked your girlfriend.... I would have loved when I was 14,but that shit is so played out and boring to me now....just a waste of time. I just don't get it.

I agree with that. I saw SJR in Milwaukee and I think he rambled incoherently more than he actually played any songs. The band looked incredibly pissed. Hopefully he doesn't do any of that shit at these shows.

I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHAT PHIL HAS TO DO WITH THIS DISCUSSION.  WE WERE TALKING ABOUT CROWBAR AND SINGING STYLES.

BUT SINCE YOUR BROUGHT IT UP, DESPITE HIS RANTS ON THE STAGE, PHIL USUALLY DOES A NICE JOB ON THE MIC.  WHEN DOWN FIRST CAME OFF HIATUS, HIS VOCALS STRUGGLED AT TIMES AS IT WAS OBVIOUS HE WAS RUSTY FROM NOT PLAYING, AND I THINK HE WAS PRETTY FRESH OFF OF BACK SURGERY.  BUT FOR MY MONEY, BASED OFF THE BOOTLEGS THAT ARE CIRCULATING, NOTHING TOPS PHIL'S VOCALS WITH DOWN BACK DURING THE '95 SHOWS.  HE SOUNDED SO ENERGETIC AND FULL OF LIFE.  BOOTLEGS ARE ALWAYS GOOD TO RATE VOCALS BECAUSE THERE'S NO MIXING AND NO TINKERING WITH THE SOUND, SO LOTS OF TIMES YOU CAN GET A TRUE READING ON HOW GOOD SOMEONE SOUNDED IN CONCERT.  EVEN BEING AT THE CONCERT DOESN'T COMPARE TO HEARING A BOOTLEG OF A SHOW TO RATE VOCALS, IMO.

HE WILL, BUT IT SHOULDN'T BE AS LENGTHY.  IF I REMEMBER RIGHT, HE WAS BATTLING PLENTY OF DEMONS WHILE SJR WAS STILL TOGETHER, SO IT PROBABLY ADDED TO HIS STATE OF MIND AND STAGE DEMEANOR.  THE LAST COUPLE OF TIMES I SAW THEM, WHILE HE STILL TALKS A DECENT AMOUNT BETWEEN SONGS, IT'S NOT AS LENGTHY AS WHAT I ORIGINALLY REMEMBER.

It was crazy talk, I couldn't make out but a few words here and there. The rest of the band had this look on there faces like; 'here we go again'. 30 minutes of music would have been preferable.

HARPO'S IN DETROIT WAS ALWAYS A GOOD PLACE TO WATCH DOWN TO STAY OUT OF THE NONSENSE.  IF YOU DON'T WANT TO GO ON THE FLOOR, YOU CAN STAY ON THE SECOND LEVEL NEAR THE RAILING AND HAVE A GOOD VIEW OF THE SHOW, AS WELL AS GET GOOD SOUND.

I saw Pantera 4 times in one year about
14 years ago...and I loved it. The first time
I saw them, they co-headlined with
Wrathchild America during the Cowboys From Hell Tour.
Fucking killed.

I bought the first DOWN disc when it came out and was hella
disappointed...

and NO, I haven't listened to them since except brief excerpts
of music I run into on the interwebs. I don't hate them...
but I don't like them. I would buy a ticket with their name
on it though, as long as The Melvins were opening.
