Quote from: mumuThanks for posting this- very interesting :!:   Dan Raymond is my pretend friend!  :P  I agree with Buzz, 'Cocaine' is a crappy song.  Personally, I thiink Eric Clapton is realllly over-rated.

As for people getting pre-release cd's, I'm fairly certain Dillard was selling/giving away a few copies.

First off, if you don't like the song Cocaine blame JJ Cale.

Second, who the fuck is Dan Raymond? A very cyptic ending to the rant. Mumu, did you make him a friend hat?

Klump you are so right! I should have waited until I had the Demos in my hand before I read the liner notes.

To be afraid when you are alone, in the dark, faced with the unknown, the unspeakable; that is understandable fear. To be afraid, mortally afraid, in broad daylight, in a crowded city street, that is to know Melvins.

Amazon always do that, then as the release day gets closer they change the date to a week after the US release.

Buzz has a pretty decent storytelling vibe, if a little disjointed.  I'd be interested in reading an extended collection of memories like these, because I think a lot of people can identify with that sort of backwoods redneck upbringing, where you grow up in this tiny podunk craphole and slowly begin to realize how huge the world actually is, whether that's by playing in a band that attains a level of global respect or whatever career or path you choose.  Hell, even couchcrashing bums that get around the country could identify.

My own childhood started out similarly, though not quite so bleak.

Mangeled Demos is up On Ipecac's discography, along with Orthrelm.

...and Matt Lukin was in college studying carpentry when the band started out! Hee hee!

Here's a review from AllMusicGuide:

Much has been said about the Melvins' formative years -- they inspired Kurt Cobain to start a band, they single handedly invented grunge by slowing down punk rock to a snail crawl, etc. But as evidenced by the majority of the songs that comprise
Hail, not fail.

It's a good thing too, I hear Lukin has a day job as a carpenter and is not playing music any more.
