What gives with not being able to take merch to Canada from USA? Is this up to the discretion of the customs idiot at the time or do all US bands have to leave their stuff behind when they travel to Canada? That sucks.

Yeah it sounds completely ridiculous.

A big part of the magic of catching Melvins live is rushing to the merch stand when you get there!

Also it must cost the band quite a bit of lost revenue.

Maybe they sold out and are just blaming Canada.

In order for the Melvins or any band to sell merch in Canada they have to pay taxes on their merchandise when crossing the border.

Why take the unnecessary hit when they know for a fact that they will sell all their merchandise in the US anyway? The Melvins need to make all the money they can and avoid all losses, little or not.

It's lame and it sucks but it's not the Melvins' fault.

I don't know if there's a way of getting around this. Maybe if they had Melvins merch made in Canada for sale within Canada it might work. But again, it's a hassle they don't want to deal with and that's supposing it works.

I have faith that one day the Melvins will invade Canada. It will happen. It has to.

Well, that's fucking harsh. I've never had any trouble buying merch from NoMeansNo, DOA, The Smugglers (hah!),  Melvins, etc etc here in the UK. What makes Canada so fascist? Surely all the extra tax revenue a US-based band produces playing in Canada outweighs the profits of the sale of a few t-shirts and CDs, the proceeds of which will be used on more taxable commodities (fuel, food, accommodation, blah) while they're there.

It's one thing to take merch on a month-long tour of Europe, and another to pay taxes on three dates in Canada.

I donno I've heard this (Buzz's) reasoning w/ taxes and Canada ... don't doubt there is some truth to it ... try doin' mail order in Canada ... if you get nailed for the taxes your fucked ... it's a fortune ... though I've seen countless International bands (many small fry compared to Melvins) over 30yrs of seeing concerts that seem to manage just fine ... how do they do it? For example, everytime Wolf Eyes or Bastard Noise come (which is fairly regularly) they got tons of merch ... not just shirts, cds, vinyl ... but all kinds of shit ... lathe cuts, patches, stickers, art work, tapes, effects boxes, ... fuck Wolf Eyes even brought Mod. televisions once ...
