EGO the Living Planet

Now that there are at least 3 released recorded versions of every song on Houdini I'm thinkin' a playlist featuring the best version of every track from the album would be pretty cool.

I've just started deciding and I've only heard the Endless Residency version once, so this could change when I hear it more but this is what I've got so far:

Hooch - Gluttony And Lust version
Honey Bucket - LP version
Night Goat - Am Rep single version
Set Me Straight - early demo version
Copache - Endless Residency version
Sky Pup - LP version
Spread Eagle Beagle - Endless Residency version (w/ Gimme Pizza Jam)

What would be your picks?

(((O)))

I'd go with a mash up of Gluttony and the Endless Residency show. Live is where it is at as far as im concerned.

black stallion

speaking of live there's no story, the one with Trevor Dunn is totally better than the endless residency recording both as performance and as recording. i don't like Honey Bucket live,it's too fast, so i vote for the LP version. Spread Eagle Beagle on Gluttony is great. and about Night Goat,i vote for the single version with Joe. another kickass version on the Gluttony album is Pearl Bomb's and Teet too

and Teet too
Oh man Teet is amazing on that record. Gets me air drumming along and everything!

I picked the LP version of "Sky Pup" because the mumbly vocal and the guitar lead (played by Cobain?) don't translate to the live versions. I like the early demo of  "Set Me Straight" because the recoding gives it some grit.

I can see where Black Stallion is comin' from, but I like the ER overall better than the GaL for live. I think the energy is better.  All three versions are spectacular.

oldernie

think id stick to the original album version.
not to keen on live versions really

I definitely prefer the original Copache. It's way too fast on Gluttony, and murky on ER

I still gotta hear that Endless Residency one of these days... My picks so far, track by track....
Hooch - Live Houdini
Night Goat - Live Houdini (AmRep is close second)
Lizzy - Live Houdini
Goin' Blind - LP
Honey Bucket - LP (Though Live Houdini is the least messy performance I've heard of it. I think Hog Leg is also way too fast live.)
Hag Me - LP
Set Me Straight (1983 version, with 26 songs and others close behind)
Sky Pup - LP
Joan of Arc - LP
Teet- Live Houdini
Copache- Live Houdini
Pearl Bomb- Live Houdini
Spread Eagle Beagle - Singles 1-12 as Spread Eagle. Less lenghty and the random lyrics from other tunes is a nice touch.

Candy Dazzle

The ultimate Houdini would be the whole of the Stag album.

I think I'd go with Endless Residency for everything except I'd pick the original Honey Bucket and the Night Goat single.  My favorite version of Night Goat would be the Fantomas MM one but the bass is too low in the mix.
