I am wondering if you are hearing a ribbon crasher? this is a percussion item that is three mounds of steel mounted on top of each other good SirCrover has used RibbonCrashers for quite some time, that is the only thing i am guessing you good ole'boys are hearin' ????
"SwingSet you look like a bunch of guys I know in Ireland.  It's a particular  look I can't describe.  A sort of don't fuck with me or I'll kill you look.
I mean all this in the nicest possible way of course"

No, the ribbon crasher isn't it, although he uses that a lot on Bulhead (esp. Zodiac (the verses), If I had an Exorcism (the intro), etc)

Ligature

its not a ribbon crasher. ive heard this too, and wondered what it was

i think he's hitting the ride cymbal bells and has a "high-to-low" pitch effect on them. it would have been done in the studio to get that "piiiiiiiiiiing" sound. no no normal cymbals, not even cracked ones, can make that sound.

Vcavallo

cracked cymbals definitely do not make this sound.  all the cymbals on my kit are cracked and it is very annoying because they do not ring for very long.  cracked cymbals, while cool-looking are quite frustrating when not mixed with intact cymbals.  you just can't get over the music with them.  arg.

While we're on the topic of Dale's cymbols, he has also used these weird cymbols, that kind of sound like a fucked up sloppy hi hat hit, or a splash cymbol being hit and choked very quickly after the hit. He plays it alot in Let It All Be. Does anybody know what I'm talking about, and what kind of cymbol it is?

a ribbon crasher. 3 pieces of overlapping steel on top of eachother. sounds like a mix between a small (4 inch or so) splash cymbal and a hi-hat. it hooks on to his floor tom.

The ribbon crasher rocks. I can't think of any drummers that use them regularly(like a hi-hat) the way Dale does. I had to freeze-frame the Salad DVD to figure out what it was made of. There's one on ebay right now with one bid at $24.

heneverblinks, i like your avatar.  you use a mac with the melvins cartoon background, eh?  i was rocking that setup for a few solid months.

to can hear them all through your blessened.... like the intro...

and in some parts of cow...

does anybody know if these are like.. electronic or just really weird cymbals?

i think you may be talking about the roto-tom rims. he used to use these -- when you hit them, it makes a "ping" sound that kinda reverberates for a while. i know they're on "bullhead," particularly at the end.

The use of the Crasher highlights the imagination of Dale's drumming, I guess most drummers just can't figure out where to use it. People I have seen use it recently though are, Dave Lombardo w/Fantomas (particularly on Fire walk with me), the guy from Slipknot (band he would most like to tour with - Melvins!! see Drummerworld.com) and the drummer from British band Muse, who uses it most like Dale (but he ain't no Crover beast).

I bought one, more out of curiousity than anything else. It's a lot of fun, but it rusts very quickly. I thought this was a bad thing at first, then I saw Dales which is covered in rust and still sounds cool.

Comes in two sizes by the way, 11" and 15". I am such a geek.

Hi Guys,

I was just wondering whether there are any drummer geeks here that know what the fuck that incredible cymbal/bell sound is at the begining of Your Blessend.

I have tried forever to find out but have got nowhere.

I've also seen Dave Lombardo use the same sound on a drum video, but I can't remember which one... in the video he mentions that he used to practise his double bass drum playing buy keeping time to a metronome and gradually incresing the tempo over time.. in case that rings any bells... pun intended ;)

Thanks,
Jimi Mook

i am not thinking, or listening to the song, but it may be a ribbon crasher, because they make a wild sound.  anyone know if that is it? i don't know what it sounds like in the song because my roommate is sleeping right now.  :x

Hey Vinni,

Nah... it's definitely not a ribbon crasher. You can hear the Ribbon crasher on Let it All Be and the end of The Bloat.

Jess

maybe it is just one of his smaller cymbals with some type of studio manipulation, because i've never heard that sound anywhere other than a melvins recording.
