Quote from: Dr. Gonzoyyou can't label the melvins. well maybe a shitload of stuff: noise/alternative/grunge/metal/experimental/rock
They're not a straight up Rock band.
So don't expect straight up rock.

I haven't listened to this album since my first time :(
I feel no need to.
I want to read / hear some interviews about this album.

i would say that the melvins might not be a "straight up" rock band, but they're surely a rock band. they're not jazz -- they've toured with tool and kiss and nirvana.

they have elements of all kinds of stuff, but they are a rock band first and foremost.

klump

theres a rock in there :P

i dont know how many times ive listened to it now :)

LouiLoomis

Alright, just quickly popping in before I hit the road. Tony, your comments about the Melvins being a rock band so therefore they should just play rock is absolute shit! It's definitley not fair to label the Melvins and I'm sure 99% of the people who post here would agree. Which means you really can't comment this new album fairly, cause your opinion about the Melvins (which is wrong) makes you biased. I'm sorry you didn't get HAT part 2 because now you're wasting your time trying to make people dislike this album.

anaconda

tony is just like a younger me when they robbed us with the COD release

but over time it does grow on you, and knowing the parties involved
going into this assignment, and the dual credit on the album i think you should love this for what it is! almost a tragic epic of failed attempts that are still so fucking beautiful! this is like a better honky, or singles 1-12

got it today and i'm flying on this groove, these wind sounds etc are not samples! these sound like source takes at locations, and then manipulated.

pink bat is an itchy kind of song for me, I like it BEST!

tx to klump and his betty who hooked the conda nasty up! now theres TWO of me! anacondas! in theatres not near you, NOW!

Quote from: Green HoneyI knew I'd heard that riff from the title track somewhere before as soon as I heard it, but where? Maybe they played it on the film soundtrack tour..???

yeah they played the last riff during the first film "Kranky Claus". This shit sounds amazing live.
This is deffinately my favorite track of the record. Especially with the boombastic BOOOOOOOOOM lustmord throws in every time the riff repeats itself in the last part....quality
I could catch a monkey

i never said that they should "just play rock." look back, and you'll see that. what i did say is that they should "play rock," meaning they should'nt put out a bullshit album like this one, an album that's over half noise. they should make goddamned MUSIC, which is why i listen to them. it's silly to think that anyone would want a good band to put out an album full of white noise instead of songs, but yet there will be those who defend bands for doing anything, no matter what. they're called "apologists."

and, how is it "not fair" to "label" the melvins as a "rock band"? that's what they are. bass, guitar, drums, vocals. they play rock music. i don't like them because i like rap or polka. or formless, nonmusical noise.

and, what? my opinion is wrong? um, that statement is quite amusing, to say the least. and i'm not trying to get people to "dislike" this album. i'm simply stating that i don't see much about this album that is redeemable. one good rock song, a pointless jammy instrumental, a bunch of static sounds, a few random riffs, and two poorly written/recorded/mixed sub-par rock songs does not an album make.

really, who honestly wants to sit around and listen to this lustmord shit? it does nothing. it means nothing. it goes nowhere. it takes no effort. i know a million other people who could do that shit in their sleep.

the melvins could record an album full of the sound of a car's engine idling, and i'd bet that someone would defend it.

Stop, breathe, and think for one fucking second.
Read his posts again 'cause you're clearly overlooking his point and putting words in his mouth.

Quotenow you're wasting your time trying to make people dislike this album

Talk about fucking double standards, here you and a few others go on a fucking crusade and just wont suck it in that some people just got a bit dissapointed with the new record and you just have to turn them around.
Let everyone have their opinion. Jesus.
It's OKAY not to like EVERYTHING the melvins put out.

LouiLoomis

I'm not trying to turn anyone around. But it sounds like a lot of you have problems with the Melvins trying to do something new. I still don't think it's fair that you think they 'should play rock music'. I'm not sure if you're aware the Melvins don't always limit themselves to just guitar, bass and drums (please listen to Stag). I'm glad you found me saying 'your opinion was wrong' amusing, as I was joking.

Also I'm not a so-called "apologist" as I have never defended 'Prick' or 'Message Saved 7"

anaconda

Please everyone! read my post - this is a better Honky,
but it's definitely nowhere near Bullhead or any of the more straight ahead "rock" albums the Melvs have done.

Don't get me wrong! I fast forward thru half of pigs of the roman empire to get to a nice bass riff, or to safety but on the whole its the melvs AND lustmord, not just a true "Melvins only appear on this" kind of thing.
I agree that it is flawed but its nice if you dont sit and concenrate on each bit, just let it wash over you while you play acoustic guitar or hit a bong

Dr. Gonzo

Fuck you man!
Honky is one of the Melvins best.
Honky fucking rules!
HONKYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Honky rules my anus... That's one great album.
FUCK you man! Fucking honky puts the new one to shame.
How dare you!
How dare!
How dareth you say thee words in my realm!

The new album is awesome and all..... I like pink bat and safety 3rd much more that the bloated pope.

Alright dude... I'll strum the acoustic well I listen... great f'n plan.
"Fuck the man, and fuck the plan." - love 666.

anaconda

totally gonz! safety and pink bat have that mescaline
using head-cold type of mark d vibe. i love pigs!

Quoteit's silly to think that anyone would want a good band to put out an album full of white noise instead of songs, but yet there will be those who defend bands for doing anything, no matter what.

Why is that silly? I like "noise" albums, and several bands that I like (including not just the MELVINS, but also Sonic Youth, Royal Trux,  and Mike Patton) have made them and I hope they make more. If I thought those albums were not well done, I wouldn't defened them. If you just said you didn't like it, that's one thing, but you accused the band of "ripping you off". That means you think that the band threw something together to steal money from fans and we're all dupes for goin' along with it. That's not the case.  I reallly do listen to and enjoy albums like Collosus Of Destiny , Prick, Adult Themes For Voice and Twin Infinitves.. The fact the MELVINS make albums like that in addition to the "rock" stuff is one of my favorite things about them.  I haven't heard the new disc yet but the way that folks keep comparing it to Honkey which is one of my favorite MELVINS albums make me very excited.

It's funny that you seem to think of HAT as a "rock" album 'cause to me it's just as much a "noise" album. There's tons of noise all over it.

Quotereally, who honestly wants to sit around and listen to this lustmord shit? it does nothing. it means nothing. it goes nowhere. it takes no effort. i know a million other people who could do that shit in their sleep.

I do. I also really interested in tryin' Lustmord's other stuff. I also have several friends who are way into it. I'm lookin' foreward to this new album partly because I think it's gonna be a good way to turn them onto the MELVINS. Don't be so quick to write off sound collage albums. While thy're not musical in the "normal" sense they are put together to create moods, build to a climax, and create feeling for the listener. It's far more difficult than you give it credit for. If it really is that easy for you, you might have a real gift for it. I suggest you try.

It's not just that you didn't like the album. That's fine. If you don't "get" it that's fine too. Without even hearin' it it's obvious that it's not for everyone. You went farther than that and insulted everyone who does like it, the artists who made it, and albums like it and that's gonna get an angry response.

grachan

I was really disappointed with the Bloated Pope.

But after reading this thread - especially tony's comments - I can't wait for this. It sounds like an ace LP. I get bored of 'straight' stuff real quickly.
