But do you like the 'Message Saved' 7" better than 'Pigs...'?

HELL no. i listened to that worthless thing once, and that was enough.

Quote from: Metalhead CowTony, why do you keep saying it's been 3 years since we got new Melvins? HAT came out in 2002. That's 2 years. Plus we got 26 Songs last year, the Neither Here Nor There book earlier this year, and when was the Salad Of A Thousand Delights released on DVD? It was just like a couple years ago. I don't see what your'e so upset about. The Jello album is coming soon, and I know you want to hear Buzz sing, but they've been mentioning a "remix" record, and a rerelease of The Mangled Demos for a while now. Hopefully those will come out next year.

oh, yeah, you're right. it was 2002. i was thinking it was 2001 for some reason. sorry.

but 26 songs, the book, and the salad DVD are all OLD shit -- i want new shit. and not new shit with jello biafra singing. and not old demos. and not remixes of old songs. i want a new melvins album featuring the melvins playing their actual compositions. i thought that lustmord would just be the noise element of this record (and "the bloated pope" seemed to confirm that), but he's really the star. and that sucks, because i don't see the point of what he does. it's literally just like listening to sound effects from a movie soundtrack out of context. there's no musicality to it. i guess i want to listen to music, not sound effects.

i suppose i really underestimated how much lustmord would have to do with this. i sure didn't think i'd have to listen to his bullshit for over half the album's running time, i know that much! :?

i dunno -- i can't make people see what i see, but i just listen to this album and i know that this kind of thing is not why i listen to this band. this is the first time i've ever felt cheated by them. if you hold this up next to HAT, stag, the maggot, stoner witch, bullhead, ozma, or lysol -- or virtually anything they've done -- it doesn't measure up.

okay, fair enough

I'm going to wait until the album is released to hear it. It would be interesting to hear a song to song review from the people who like the album (that's you klump, LuiLoomis  ), so I can hear both sides of the controversy. :P

Hehe, I just have to throw this in. Here's a Buzz quote:

*talking about Pigs*

"I don't know, I think it's great. If you don't like it, there's something wrong with you. *laughs*"

Who else listened to that interview?

Dr. Gonzo

where can I hear/download this interview???

i don't do drugs, myself, and i love almost every melvins album except for this one.  i also think earth and sunn are pretty much useless -- i don't really care to listen to people play unaccompanied riffs, because it just takes no effort. and let's not get into how much i think lustmord is a joke. i've deleted much better albums than the ones i had of lustmord's.

honestly, what's "impressive" about this album, really? it takes NO talent to turn on a machine and get it to make wind noises. in the past, the melvins have used ambient noise as a texture, not as the main focus, and they've used it appropriately, as something to make their songs more interesting-sounding. here, it's the main focus, and it's not even them doing it!

OK then, let's take Collossus of Destiny, a record which aside from a snippet of Eye Flys contains not one shred of 'rock'. In my humble opinion, this record is clearly more focused and structured than that. Collossus sounds like something an avant-garde music lover with a free samples CD could make on his laptop, while this is a clearly different kettle of fish. Is your problem the fact that Lustmord provides the noises rather than the Melvins? If so, are you pissed off that Adam Jones is part of the band this time around as well?

i guess this album is for people who like to listen to vaccuum cleaners and malfunctioning smoke alarms, not music.

noise has its place on every melvins album. so does quiet ambience. but the main reason i listen to the melvins is to hear them rock. this album is way too short on that.

Where on Prick, Collossus and even Honky do the Melvins 'rock' more than on this record? I'd say that Bloated Pope and Safety Third are two of the most straight ahead rock tracks that the band has ever penned, but the point of this album isn't just to 'rock', it's an atmospheric record. Might I suggest that if you want non-stop slamdancing you should try the latest Hatebreed album?

Quotei was listening today, again -- you guys have to try listening to track 2, and then going to "safety first" and then back again. that song just sounds like SHIT. if it had been produced better, that and "pink bat," this album would be much better.

as it stands, i like "prick" better, at this point. imagine that!

What's wrong with Prick? 'Tis a fine record...I even prefer it to Ozma. But that's besides the point. About the production of Safety Third, Buzz's voice is drenched in effects to render it as part of the musical scenery rather than the bellowing bull-vocals of Bloated Pope. Listen to the way in which III leads in to Bloated and then that in turn gives way to Toadi, it's the way convention is played with and then spiralled away from.

I think rather than listening to this record while you drive, it'd be an idea to just put it on at home, relax and listen to it without longing for Bullhead to break in...it really is more impressive than you give it credit.
Don't cut me!DON'T CUT ME!
-Thrones, Simon Legree live...

Galvano

I'm hoping it'll grow on me, cause at a first glance I'm not too impressed with 70% of the album.
Is it just me or does Safety third sound way too much like Ministry.
IMO Lustmord can get the fuck out.

Metalhead Cow - I'll post a track by track review when I get back from the Bulldog Bash on Sunday. That means I'm going to have to leave Klump and the Reverend in charge of defending this album. Good luck guys!

"colossus" was very clearly meant to be a different kind of release for the band, and it came after a flood of new music. plus, it was a live album. and the fans knew in advance that it was supposed to be a different kind of thing.

but, yeah, a big problem is that there are large stretches on this album where lustmord does his boring shit while kevin plays a bass note here or there or something. this is not interesting in the slightest. as for adam jones being a part of the band, i can't speak to that. haven't seen the liner notes, yet.

"prick" has the song "larry," which is better than both the songs you mentioned, in my mind. and i guess i'd rather listen to the melvins making noise than lustmord. at least their noise does something rather than just sitting there going "WHOOOOOOSHHHHHHHH" or sitting on one keyboard note for an hour.

hatebreed, funny. no thanks. but my point is that the melvins are a ROCK BAND. they should play ROCK MUSIC. they shouldn't put three real songs on an album and fill the rest with bullshit. and if they're going to sneak by with only three real songs, then they should try to make them not sound like shit, which is the case with "pink bat" and "safety first." seriously, put on "the bloated pope," the only redeemable song on the album, and then put on "safety first." it sounds like shit.

QuoteWhat's wrong with Prick? 'Tis a fine record...I even prefer it to Ozma. But that's besides the point. what's wrong with prick? umm, it's a load of horseshit, essentially. if you like it more than ozma, you're retarded. or you really like listening to the noise of a crowd better than incredibly well-written, creative rock songs. but i don't listen to this band to hear anything but the BAND playing MUSIC.

and your comments about safety third lead me to believe that you're not listening. the vocals are not the problem. it's the way the kick is mixed super-loud, the guitars super-low, and the sound effects take over. and it does sound like a bad ministry remix at the end, too.

i've got no problem with the first three tracks of the album. i was still excited upon first listen as i went through them. it's when it became clear that the album was not going to get better that things started looking bad.

QuoteI think rather than listening to this record while you drive, it'd be an idea to just put it on at home, relax and listen to it without longing for Bullhead to break in...it really is more impressive than you give it credit.

the first time i listened to it, i laid on the couch, shut off the lights, and put my headphones in. and it sucked. so i decided to try and rock it in the car. it still sucked.

i only wish they were as focused as they were on bullhead with this record. filling an album with a bunch of B-movie sound effects and a few poorly-recorded half-songs is fucking easy. writing 8 songs that are complicated and weird, but still rocking? that's not.

klump

i bet you prefer caravggio over duchamp?

Dr. Gonzo

yyou can't label the melvins. well maybe a shitload of stuff: noise/alternative/grunge/metal/experimental/rock
They're not a straight up Rock band.
So don't expect straight up rock.

I haven't listened to this album since my first time :(
I feel no need to.
I want to read / hear some interviews about this album.
