What's in your opinion the most creative era of the band?

every single era of the band is pretty interesting, though in my opinion Stag,Stoner Witch and Honky got some of the most original music they ever composed. curious to hear your opinion..

i mean in terms of songwriting,the most original and experimental era of the band. first time i heard Honky and Stag i thought these guys were pure genius

kevin, mark d and trevor dunn eras always struck me as the most artistic/ creative side of the melvins.

Im unsure but i think im going to opt for the Kevin era. I say that somewhat biased tho being that those years saw some of my favourite Melvins albums released. I mean we had the weirdness of COD, the multifaceted Trilogy stuff, awesome HAT and POTRE too! Altho Stallion i see your point the Mark D era was pretty out there also. Having said that all the phases have had their fair share of exploration about them.

Mark D era was great for swapping instruments and playing up to three sets of totally different music.

Kevin era because of the heaviness of the albums and total psychodelia (sic) of the gigs - unbelievable energy.

Present incarnation because of the Porn/Big Biz/Melvins sets live and seeing two drummers.

Gluey through Lysol because they made me stop listening to every album I'd bought previously and sit up and pay attention.

Now waiting for them to incorporate the two tuba players from ORE into the band for a special at the Royal Albert Hall.


It may be that the several changes of lineup throughout its life has helped to keep Melvins interesting and diverse. Who knows?

i voted for mark d....
though kevin and current 4-piece / lite are close...
then again everything up to mark d is great too... maybe not so freaky/creative, but songwriting wise still pretty impressive...

30yrs of melvins, and literally everything is important and mile-high above the average rock band.
best band ever!

Love them all for different reasons, but it's true that Texan Cowboy was a part of what I would consider to be their most experimental era.

Plus, there's so much more to see from Jared and hopefully Trevor, too.

I could have picked almost any era but went with the Lukin era because I think they laid down the foundation for almost everything they've done right from the beginning. With Lukin the created the basic sound of the band and most of what's come since is could be seen as refinements of what they did at the start.

I think it's a hard question and I'm really not sure.

I was torn between the Mark D and Kevin eras. I took "most creative era" as the time where the band pushed the envelope the most. Good arguments can be made for both periods but when I thought of Kevin and Hostile Ambient Takeover, Pigs Of The Roman Empire and all three Trilogy records I picked the Kevin era. While the band got just as creative during the Mark era, I felt with the Kevin era they explored more styles to a further degree. Two facemelters-HAT and Maggot, the chill no distortion ever Bootlicker, and the electronic sludge and ambiance of POTRE. Oh and I almost forgot.... 2 albums with Jello Biafra! (I personally am not a big fan of those but they are definitely a creative concept that pushes the envelope!)
