I remember watching 'salad' as a teen and thinking that the guy playing bass couldn't be the same guy on the cover of the Joe Preston record.  Given the melvins confusing track record of bass players and lack of themelvins.net bassist morgue at the time, I assumed it was just another short lived bass player.

And I fully expected to see Lorax on bass given that she had been on the your choice live album recorded 4 months earlier.
