Finally made it to my first Melvins show. Holy shit it was great. After loving Helms Alee the audience wasn't reacting very well to Eye Flys or the first few songs after it, but soon they won over the crowd. Maybe a little too much, because my one and only complaint was that I was sitting at the front of the stage but halfway through the show some drunk fratboy douchebags started a mosh immediately next to me and kept trying to get everyone around them involved even though nobody wanted anything to do with it - so it was pretty much just these four shirtless cavemen who you could smell across the room punching each other into people and pissing off everybody else who was just trying to watch the show. Some petite punk chick next to me who kept running up and overenthusiastically jumping on the guys before getting knocked away spent like 15 minutes trying to grab me and forcibly shove me into it and I wanted to deck her.

Was not at all expecting to hear Halo of Flies, AMAZON, or especially Euthanasia. Steve was a spectacle unto himself and gave the show a lot more life. Helms Alee were great too and it was cool seeing their drummer/singer jump up on the stage (from about three feet away from me - didn't even notice she was there) to dual-drum/sing on Night Goat.

But yeah. Had a great time. Met Walsby. Got a shirt. Just still kind of disappointed I didn't get to see them the last two times they were here, with Unsane and with Napalm Death/Melt-Banana. But will definitely go the next time they come around.

They did this at the Hamden, CT show too. Does anybody know when they starting doing it?

Was at this show.  Not very well-attended although maybe typical of a Monday night.  This made for a real intimate performance compared with the prior shows I've seen at the Paradise in Boston.  It was comfortable.  It was pretty easy to avoid the aforementioned weirdos who felt like pushing around.

Anyone who appreciates Helms Alee should really see their live set, I was totally blown away by the sheer talent and execution of some pretty complex arrangements.  Particularly I was surprised the vocals were very close to what you hear on the records.  The drummer's a babe.

Steve MacDonald won me over.  After finding some of his antics goofy and even distracting I really found myself buying into it.  He moves pretty seamlessly between the light and dark playing styles which I think makes him a good fit for the band if he were to hang on as a permanent member.  I think this was most clear to me during AMAZON which he was way into.  AMAZON is an amazing addition to the setlist.

Buzz and Dale crushed as always.  Buzz's facial expressions throughout are incredible- he really feels this music.
