The Melvins are just the Melvins. Whether you want to classify them into sub-genres is your own choice. The sad fact is that we somehow feel the need to categorize musicians/artists like this. Why? So one can say "I listen to punk music, cause I'm a punk, and punk rules, and you're not punk, and don't listen to punk, so you're not as cool as me"? What the fuck. Just dig whatever music you rock to, and quit trying to classify shit. Check out Wikipedia's bullcrap definitions of the doom/sludge metal genre of music. Might as well be a fucking new species of living organism. It's insane actually. Part of the reason I love the Melvins so much is their unique sound. Can't say I've heard anything like them. I'd actually go so far as to contradict myself above and create a new genre of music called Melvic. And the Melvins are the only band in the Melvic genre. I like Melvic. Do you listen to Melvic?

Sludge out with Melvic. Do it.

I agree with everyone who says the Melvins are the Melvins and that's good enough.  If I were to categorize them...say to someone who hadn't heard them...I would call them a metal band.

This is a very easy question to answer.

Yes the Melvins were influenced by classic rock and Punk, but yes Melvins are a punk band because punk is also a sentiment. For example. Any band that pulls away from the main stream and sticks to its roots is punk in a way. If your band has a purpose in its music beyond just sounding good you are punk too. If your stance on the world as a band is to make for change and you are the enemy of the 6 million dollar man you are essentially punk too.

Just because a band is like fuck you, people misrepresent that as punk. Punk has a purpse its not a circus sideshow of people like a stale cartoon of exclusivity to dress like an idiot and feel like you belong to a group. Punk is about forging your own path and stepping away from the norm. Tool is a punk band too.

ITheir fans are idiots who want everything to sound and stick to a certain formula.

That isn't necessarily true.. repetition is not a bad thing, generally people like what they hear and they want more. I'm not saying that I like these kinds of music but I think that that is a little harsh. An enormous aspect of music is entertainment and as long as these bands entertain people then they serve a purpose. It doesn't make everyone who listens to them idiots.

It should be very apparent to everyone now that the Melvins are a bluegrass group. They have left their punk influences in the ashheap of music fads and Buzzo has now taken up the banjo and Dale plays a washboard. They have renamed themselves Buzz Owens and Dale Jim Bob Ray Crover. Their first single: "Blue Moon of Montesano", will be released on White Lightning Recordings on 78.

PUNK IS TYPING IN ALL CAPS, BECAUSE IT INDICATES THAT YOU MEAN SERIOUS BUSINESS.  LAST I CHECKED, BUZZ'S CAPS LOCK KEY WAS BROKEN.  SO NOT PUNK.

This is a silly thread.  Even reading the word "punk" makes me want to watch Golden Girls reruns.
