Sugar Daddy Disaster 7"
« on: December 21, 2021, 11:55:34 AM »
From HAZE FB:

Long winded post about a small run of records. So a decade or so ago, the Melvins and myself launched a series of 12” records called the “Sugar Daddy Series”  that were split/shared records with other bands the Melvins were influenced/inspired by. It ended up being like 13 records in all and included a ton of greats like the Butthole Surfers, U-men, Killdozer, Napalm Death and many more. The first released was to be with mpls legends, the Cows. Well, when the records showed up, through whatever miscommunication long since lost in time,  what were waiting for me were 7”s. I already had the 12” sleeves printed, and expensive specialty bags sitting here, and I couldn’t use 7”s. Their existence would confuse folks as the series hadn’t even been established yet. So the manufacturer agreed to have them destroyed. Fast forward a decade and I’m over chatting with the fine folks at Noiseland MFG (I still work with them regularly) and it’s mentioned that 150 of the fuck up 7”s survived the purge and were found buried in the warehouse, and asked did I want them?! Bam! Sugar Daddy Disaster 7” is born out of the boredom of waiting 10 months for current projects to get pressed. I found the same style specialty vinyl bags, and did a new take on the original sleeve design by Mackie Osborne , had ‘em screen printed by the speedy Boxy Mouse MFG, and then added a rubber stamp cut print of a Sugar Daddy’s Sack (of dough). As a mini Sugar Daddy relic tchotchke thang, they came out really cool! So we’ll kick off the new year by throwing these online Jan 2. I’ve even got a variant of 10 printed on pink paper I’m bringing to Fresno Jan 8!

The biggest surprise about all this to me is that Haze didn't just take them all initially back in the day and still sell them. Im sure if that happened now he would.

Eh, I think he explained pretty well. It was the beginning of the series and it would have been confusing.

I'm moving soon so I'm trying not to order more stuff. But if there's any up for grabs when I get to my new place it'll be a cool one to own.

Well, that's what he said but for a band like Melvins who have done all sorts of unexpected things, do you think fans would be too puzzled? Im not saying he could have sold them immediately but im just surprised he didn't acquire them there and then. Perhaps with a view to releasing them later possibly. For instance, i could definitely see Buzz doing something like that - turning a problem into a positive. Although i totally understand that Haze probably didn't want to spend extra money on something he saw as "faulty" product at the time.

Am is misremembering this or was the original plan to be a 7" series rather than a 12" series?

Either way, it's pretty neat.

Last 7" interview discussion I can remember: Buzz discussed the cost of making 7". The cost of a 7", at the time of the interview, was more than a 10". To paraphrase: "No more 7 inches, because of cost, plus more room for art on a 10" or full size LP."

Great, I don’t like 7 inch records at all, I’m always afraid of not being 100% accurate when placing the stylus on the right place of the record, fearing that the needle might slip and hit the mat if I place it too close to the outer border of the 7 inch.

Are we all getting ready? Are we nervous? Have we all made a test-purchase to make sure our systems are ok?
