Forget what you thought when you actually heard them, which Melvins album do you think seemed the most exciting project when it was first announced? Three (in no order) stand out for me.....

1. A Walk With Love & Death - was a really exciting one. It was a proper double album, a great visual package, the first with Steven. Plus they promoted it with talk of an upcoming movie and a little online trailer.

2. Five Legged Dog - again the epic, double album effect! Perhaps some of the excitement of this was tempered by the fact it was mostly already known songs. So not quite as exciting as if it was all new material.

3. Freak Puke - the bands first album for 2 years and obviously something completely new under the "Lite" tag. Would this be good? What would it sound like etc? What would Melvins do outside of the BB era and in such a radical departure with a stand-up bass?

I hadn't heard of the band at the time of the Trilogy but i imagine the announcement of those three releases was a big event and super exciting/intriguing. Especially with these being their first outings with Kevin and first time on Ipecac.

I was pretty stoked for Senile Animal, same as Nude with Boots.

(A)SA was the first new Melvins album that came out whilst i was a fan. I do remember being excited but didn't really know much about the band at that point. I didn't know about the BB boys joining either. I was just excited that it was brand new and the first time i would experience a NEW Melvins album like other fans.

Hostile Ambient Takeover was probably the first one I knew the date.

A Walk With Loveland Death was probably my most anticipated because I had really grown to love love love a lot of back catalog at that point. No longer a long time casual fan.

Hearing a preview of Hostile ambient takeover 'Brain Centre'  on the Ipecac site got me pretty hyped up back in the ancient times.

The first Fantomas album, getting a copy of that on CD was a big deal. Getting Directors Cut before hearing the first Fantomas album. I had gone to my local music store asking for things by name so often they finally began to stock Ipecac stuff like the Melvins Fantomas Big band, and Colossus of Destiny of all things.

My friend in highschool was Melvins 'curious' after hanging out with me for awhile, working on him. He eventually went and bought the Big band and Colossus of Destiny as his introduction to them. As long as I live, I'll never forget how much COD completely flummoxed him!! He felt like he'd been ripped off. I enjoyed it even more after that. Seeing The Melvins live with David Scott Stone was awesome! I was delighted.

We used to trade our Cd's back and fourth so he could listen to Fantomas. He liked that stuff because I'd made a Mr. Bungle fan out of him at that point.

It was about $40 for the first Fantomas album. THE most expensive CD I ever bought, back when minimum wage was about 7 bucks an hour, or maybe not even!! More like 5 something.

I was surprised to even see it on the shelf at the local HMV so I took it up to the counter to ask what it was even doing in the store. They told me they actually ordered it for themselves and I felt bad because I wanted it. So I taped them a Copy and brought it back to them.

You could wind up going through a small rural town somewhere and pop into a music store that still maybe had a few Cassettes left in stock back then, I picked up Helmet 'Meantime' that way for like Five bucks.

The Maggot.  I remember having to drive 45 minutes to a store that had it on release day.  Still also remember getting t-boned on the way home.  The friend I drove with still reminds me about "the trilogy of deliciousness" as I called it the day.

Senile Animal, Everybody Loves Sausages, Tres Cabrones and the documentary all come to mind

the bloat

I thought the Lustmord collab was pretty interesting when announced. If I recall, Melvins released the Bloated Pope in advance, which certainly whet my palette

Alex-

Easily A Senile Animal. It was the first new album as a fan and it came out a few months before I first saw them live.

HAT. It was the first Melvins album I had advance warning of due to the internet. Previous to that I'd just be at the record dump and notice ... "Oh hey, look a new Melvins record!" That was the best.
It was a big night out on the town for the Id and the Reptile Brain ...

like a brick wall, like a dream waiting to be!

The couple record stores that I mainly went to as a teenager always had upcoming releases posted on a reader board. I knew about all the Atlantic albums well in advance of their releases and got them right around when they came out but somehow there was no warning about Honky so it was a fun surprise when my girlfriend at the time brought it home one day.

The trilogy was probably the most exciting releases for me.  Can't remember where I got some advanced details but I was really interested in this new Ipecac label.
