"Victory of the Pyramids" (the main Ian part) has been stuck in my head for a few days. It's a such a weird, chromatic guitar hook. It doesn't make much sense and I thought it was grating a bit at first. Now it's one of the key parts of the album for me.

I still REALLY dislike it. A few times i've even skipped that bit. It just sounds dumb to me. I don't like the singing section either. TOTALLY ruins an otherwise fine album.

I like how joyful sounding that riff bit is, and then the other part of Pyramids, not so much, but it creates a nice contrast.

Heh Coady Willis liked my comment on Facebook about how it could be better than Michael Jackson's Thriller and AMG would still give it 3 and a half stars like most of their albums from the past 20 years.  A few days later they gave it 3 and a half stars! Bwhaha!  I mean I don't really care about their opinion but it's pretty weird.

I had another listen to it just now. It's not technically "bad", it's okay and probably fine for most bands i don't much care about. I think what bugs me about it is i like to think of Melvins as cool. I think this goes for a lot of their material that i personally feel uncomfortable about. I consider the band to be an amazing group and it's bits like that in the song that downgrade things for me. Get me questioning just how great this band that i THINK are great really are. I think to myself "a great, awesome band wouldn't do that!". But then really ALL bands do something either on a song, record, or in their career that is a bit patchy or sometimes downright horrible. It just disappoints me to no end when i hear something i consider to be a drop off or a lazy effort.

I personally like that part because it's something new to the Melvins. It's hard to come up with new sounds after 50 something albums. Long live buzz and his endless fountain of creativity!

Odd to say the first album without Dale (other than Mangled) is one of their best of the past decade. It's loads better (to ME) than Working with God and Tarantula Heart. Bad Mood Rising and Thunderball present consistently awesome riffs, melodies, vocals and song structures. It shows me that it really is just a matter of taste at this point. I am sure others think Tarantula and God are better than those two. The quality is the same, I just like one collection of songs more than another.

Tarantula Heart is really good. I relistened the other day and it's about on par with the new one. Bad Mood Rising might still be the best of the batch, though.

It's real tough. I don't think there is much between any of those. All have songs i think are fantastic but then also each has a couple of songs i have issues with. So it's hard to get a consistent, overriding feeling to them for me. I'd probably rate them like this...
