Quote from: Vcavalloi really liked this album when it came out.
my friend who i make listen to the melvins really likes the title track.  she's come with me to see them live a few times and that was one of her favorite songs of the last tour.  i was kinda shocked that a quasi-melvins listener would like that song so much.
what is more shocking is that 100% melvins fans DON'T like it.

as i have said before, working with lustmord was one of their best ideas of recent times.

def not a shocker to someone who likes aphex twin, vin.
btw i thought this album was great in a removed sense. gives me a breather. one of those things i put on when i want to switch it up. heavy screech is saved by heavy belllllll,
.
gamble gamble gamble DIE.

I can see why he says it's on of thier best, I mean Bloated pope and POTRE.8)

yeah a dynamic and strange yet a rock song and a soundlandscape with noise and ambient elements and even some rock :)

I listened to this album on repeat last summer while building chairs in a dark cellar and eating caramels...seriously!

I dont know how many times I listened to it but I worked quite a few hours a day , so it mustve been a few times.

Idolatrus really reminds me of Jimi Hendrix` Third stone song :)

cool :!:

I really love all of this record too. But I must agree that the screeching at the begining of Pink Bat is just plain obnoxious mainly because it gets turned up to an annoying level, back down, and then back up. I equate it with nails on a chalkboard. The song to follow however is just lovely.

I got a one of my friends good with that track, They weren't ready for it,  hehe.

I fucking love how III leads into The Bloated Pope, That was love at first listen.

I love how that really kind "breaks the level" cause record producers often dont want to do stuff like that ("go over the top")
In this world of slick produced records is nice with a needle in the eye.

Interesting thoughts about Pink Bat (producers being afraid to go over the top). I'm only a little bit conflicted about it though, because to be honest that really loud screeching just made me feel like I was being assaulted and just turned me off from listening to that record at all, for almost a year, and it was the first Melvins record I ever got in anticipation of a new one. Again though, I'm gonna give it a listen again though. I just feel annoyed having to turn down the volume in the middle of a record, which is what I do because it just gets to me I guess. I had no idea everyone loved this record so much; I thought it was kind of a lukewarm reception especially since they released the Jello record right after that.

Now I'm planning on downloading an Explosions in the Sky record, which I'm kind of excited about, so I'll listen to that along with Mogwai and POTRE.

Vcavallo

i think at first, many thought of it as lukewarm, but it seemed like they have come around in the months after its release, but haven't mentioned it until now.
just like so many other melvins albums.  people hate it at first, then come to love it more than corn itself.

am i alone in loving all the obnoxious screeching noise thats being talked about?  I think it works very well at the beginning of Pink Bat and in context of the whole album.  Take a look at Eggnog....all that frantic noise is basically what makes the album for me.

whoops, overlooked your post.  but yeah, the way i see it...., it doesnt get anymore accessible than an album filled with snippets of feedback and blistering noise.  So, if the Melvins were trying to annoy me(as they love to do so often with fans and non-fans alike), they failed miserably.    :D

for some reason Pigs of the Roman Empire reminds me of Sun Ra.
