i tried pointing my digital camera at a television screen playing the video, and after an hour of taping i looked at it and it was totally unrecognizable.

I know it's probably crazy to actually suggest something at this point but why the hell not.  Both video cameras and youtube have improved drastically since the beginning of 2006.  A Sony Flip HD camera I bought used for $80 will let me film things off my TV in pretty decent quality.  Not to mention that youtube let's you upload huge files now too so he wouldn't have to worry about chopping up the video.

I can still dream of seeing the interview one day, right?
