10/23/2005 Webster Hall New York, NY w/ Jello Biafra

The show rocked. Mouth Sewn Shut opened, they were horrible. Nothing good to say about them. Then, Alice Donut played. They were pretty good. I don't know their music, but they put on a decent show.

Then, out comes David Scott Stone for about 5 solid minutes of bass and mouth noise. Prettycool stuff, and the sound was great. Then, Dale comes out and starts hitting the drums, it gets even better. Then, finally Buzz comes after a while and they break into a killer rendition of Pigs of the Roman Empire. The song sounded AWESOME. Probably the best sound I've heard out of them to date, and I think this was my 9th Melvins show. Then, they played amazon and AMAZON. Awesome again. Don't remember the whole set list, but there were two tracks off of Houdini I believe, and The Bloated Pope. After the first POTE song though, the sound got kind of muffled a bit. But, they still sounded really good. Seems like they played another couple songs, but I really can't remember. Dave was great. And, maybe it was just me, but the drums sounded a bit more metalic or something, they were really great sounding.

Then, they disapeared for about a minute, and returned with ski maskes on. They started playing, then Jello came out in a white trench coat, jumping around like a madman. They all sounded great together. Again, don't remember the set list but they played quite a bit off of Never Breath, and it seemed like 50% of the set was Dead Kennedys music which kicked major ass. All the NYC punk kids seemed to love that, they were going nuts. Highlights were Kalifornia Aber Alles, a Weslie Willis song about Rock and Roll McDonalds, Caped Crusader kicked total ass, I love that song,  and the climax of the show for me was Holiday In Cambodia during the encore. It was just awesome to be in a room full of people screaming Pol Pot. Jello had a couple rants, which were kind of tired but expected. Not too bad I guess. Oh, and it was Dale's birthday and they brought out a cake. Dale said it said Happy Birthday Bitch on it.

It was a great show, and I'm glad I finally got to see Jelvins. For an old fat dude, Jello sure does jump around and have way too much energy. He's very entertaining to watch. And, he's always doing this mime stuff. He kinda reminded me of the landlord guy  from The Big Lebowski when he does his little recitle thing that The Dude and friends have to go watch. Kind of a tubby guy who can't jump, but trys real hard. He's a great performer, he gives it everything he's got.

Oh, and they had a poster for the show which I picked up.

The Melvins have yet to let me down in concert. Another great show. And, I'm glad they played a few non-Jello songs first too because I took a friend to the show, then he could get a taste of why I'm obsessed with them. He liked both parts a lot, but especially the Melvins only part. I may have another conversion on my hands.

I travelled to NYC for the weekend to see this, Hella and Les Claypool, and Alex Grey's Avatar.

No one could have wrapped up the beauty of this weekend like the Melvins.  This was my first time seeing the Melvins in over two years (driving into Hurricane Jenean last year in hopes that somehow the show would happen was a bad idea), and I didn't even know how much I missed them until they hit the stage.  Dave seems to fit the mold very well, and Buzz and Dale really need no comments.

My only complaint though, is after seeing such a solid 50 minute pre-Jello Melvin set, I want more of the trio.  I love the Jelvin material, but I can't help but want more Buzz leading.

Glad you picked up the poster, Mike Martain of enginehouse13 did the work.  Go Columbus, Ohio go.

next time i'm home during a melvins show i'd love to meet up with you.  hey, did you see my parents in the back?  they went and called me afterwards, they really enjoyed it!
my mom said at one point she was craning her neck and said "i can't see buzz!" and one of the younger kids next to her slowly turned and looked at her with much confusion.  someone else asked my dad if he worked there and he replied with, "no, i'm here for the melvins!", which also earned him a surprised response from the younger fellow.

i would have loved to watch them.  my mom said she couldn't help dance during "let it all be".  ooooh yea, go buzz.

That's funny. I actually was in the back by the bar during the begining of the show. But, slowly crept my way up the right side about half way. Don't know if I saw your parent's or not, probably did at some point. I took my parent's to see the last show at Webster Hall when they were out to visit last fall. That was fun. I think they're still kind of in shock. My Dad said, "that drummer really earns his keep." I had to agree, lol.

Yeah, we should definately meet up. I was actually looking around to see if you'd be at this show, just looking based on the photos you've had as avitars. I figured you wouldn't be down since you said you were going to interview them in Boston, that's quite a hike.

my parents said the same thing about dale.  more or less.  i guess it is obvious to anyone how hard he works.
i would love to come back to NY sometime for a melvins show.  i may do it next year.  if they'd tour in the summer i'd be able to see them in new york again! i am getting slightly sick of this middle east nonsense for three years now...boston just doesn't cut it for me.  i imagine many bands must be on their best in NYC, it is kind of a landmark as far as the east coast goes.........(:cough: the world :cough:)

Hey there all -

Yeah - the NYC show was pure thunder & adreneline...Melvins & Jello have to be the hardest-working men in the
music biz, & their collective professionalism shines through....I haven't seen a show that genuinely exciting  in ages....
the brooding & thunderous Melvins set...a barrage of tension-filled heaviness....combined with the explosion of kinetic energy that is Jello..with the Melvins backing  in terrorist-style ski masks (save for Dale).....(.did Jello refer to  it as "Shock & Awe?" 'cause that about sums it up)....was overwhelming....brilliant show...the material from "Never Breathe" was really super-charged...I was really digging watching Buzz kick some major butt on guitar...and kudos to Dave Stone who has a super-heavy bottom sound on bass & was right in the pocket all along...& Dale..what else can you say about Dale that hasn't already been said.....the drums sounded like they were being hit in the  temple of the gods or something.....hands down best show/tour in a great while.....

mouth sewn shut would have been good if they were playing an abcnorio matinee on saturday...not for this shit.

that other band that did the trombone cover of fugazi's waiting room was so awful i went outside until it was over. efk... it seemed like jello owed them a favor or something.

as for the melvins...
amazing of course. not long enough by any means. you could tell the division of melvins vs jelvins a bit...
jello was alright but i just wasnt digging it. you know i get so submerged in the melvins and then everything changes and i feel a little blindsided by his charades that no one can guess at. at one point he jumped into the crowd- and almost fell on my godamn head- no one really wanted to catch him... it was pure fear in the eyes of small girls [not myself but the frontliners with pigtails. anyway...
i kept going over the setlist in my head on the way home.
for the ride there i only listened to the radio for prep so i could clear my mind---
on the ride back there was only silence. i couldnt bear to put anything on for some reason.

vinney i didnt see your parents -- its too bad. i love me a little helen.
also thanks for telling me what the setlist was going to be like before hand. i find myself strangely attracted to dss....
i may have to address this problem at a later date.

I've heard several times that Jello was the first guy to do stage diving and crowd surfing. Then just the other night I just saw a WW2 documentary with footage of one of the victory parades, and people were doing it in 1945.

Jello was the first and only to stage dive. It happened. The guy with the wig is buzz lol, they all have guns.
