when first getting into the melvins.

Was at a friend's party around the late '80's. A close friend and I were talking about bands.

One cat came up and asked us what we thought were bands that passed as grunge, and we threw out the usual commercialized bands that passed for grunge at the time. Nirvana, Alice In Chains, Pearl Jam, etc......

"You guys gotta listen to this....no two songs sound alike." He then tossed on the GPT/Ozma CD.

I hooked up with it right off......my close friend thought they were ok, but nuthin' special.
But he did like the idea of the Melvins sounding different, refreshing. He got into them a little more over time. I found them quite refreshing considering all the repetitive metal and thrash at the time.

Can't say Melvins were a grunge band.....but hailing from the west side they just got lumped into that category. More of a garage grunge band I would guess.

From GPT/Ozma it was Bullhead, then Eggnog, the Lysol and on and on.......some of the newer stuff is ok, but it's not like the older stuff. I do like when they hooked up with Lustmord, but some folks don't. To each his own I guess.......

You gotta partake to get into Melvins, it's probably why I always liked them.

I remember listening to Lysol with another good friend on some good tabs of fry......poor guy, it scared the shit out of him!

I bought the GPT reissue on a whim, listened to it, didn't know what to think and shelved it. A month or so later, I was really stoned on some pcific northwest bud that my friend sent me and played an mp3 of Boris, and was like 'Holyt shit, this is the best band in the world!. No turning back after that.

for me my brother quite possibly saved me from the depths of hell.....ya see back in like 89 or 90 i was into prince and really thats about it, the coolest album i had was a faith no more album. but i was only 11. about that time he inroduced me to 10 songs, then over time bullhead and eggnog, i wasn't impressed, told him his music sucked and led zepplin was better....then i got beat up. the ozma album cover interested me and i listened to it and sort of liked it, it grew on me a bit. when houdini came out i was hooked. he always told me king b was the master of feed back and i always told him to shut up and then i would get beat up again. all these years later i think i owe my bro an apology. i still have all the tapes of all those early melvins albums that i recorded from him cause i didn't ever have money to buy the albums back then. so i guess you could say some of my earliest memories was that of pirate-ing melvins albums back in the late 80's at the age of 12.

i think the 1st song that made me take notice was hearing kingsmill play youth of america on radio. always knew of the melvins but never took the time to check them out. went to cd store and listened to COD.That confused the fuk outta me at the time.but they intrigued so much i just kept goin back until i eventually bought the GPT reissue.now i fiend for melvins like a vicious crack whore!
