i read somewhere that this was the recording that was the impetus to the crybaby trilogy, i only own the maggot and have heard some of the guest album (the crybaby) and they thank all the crybabies for which none of these recordings would be possible, i guess some people aren't too contented with the way they conduct some of their live showings.  i've yet to see them live, but a diehard friend of mine went backstage at a providence show to express his disappointment of the show, and he said Buzzo was actually happy that my friend did not like the show.

this source suggested that colossus was to be the crybaby, but instead became not a joke on music.  i was a little disappointed at first, wanting all out balls on the bridge of my nose, teabaggin' fury, but upon repeated listen am fully satisfied with my purchase.

The Dead Zeppelin

Your post is alot like the album. At first I didn't get it but now I see what your saying. If you ever hear of a band called "BUNGFILTERJUNKIES" or "Pig Rectum" I will let you in free.

sousauce

i've heard of pig rectum, only in the context of jack black's school of rock, though :?

The Dead Zeppelin

The School of Rock? I haven't seen it yet, Is it good? What do you mean in the context of ""?

this cd is worth every penny for the artwork alone.
i regret taking it back when i got it about a year ago..though i was just getting into the melvins so it really threw me off. I dig it muchly now though and i need to pick up a copy.

The Piss-Machine

I take it that Collosus is just abunch of noise? That's one of the albums that I've neglected to pick up, the reason being that my local vendors are oblivious to the Melvins; mostly stores around here just carry Houdini and sometimes Stoner Witch. Besides that, it gets expensive to order stuff, so I really have to want it. Thus, the question; should I or should I not invest in COD?

you should...it's really good if you like noisey stuff.
i think its worth it.

Piss-Machine,
I really wouldn't bother paying good money for C.O.D. unless you have every other Melvins album. It's an HOUR of noise that is not musical in the least. Don't get me wrong,  I like noise (Boredoms, Coltrane's freest jazz, whatever else) but I honestly wouldn't spend your money on C.O.D. when there's the rest of their catalogue to choose from. If you want good noisy Melvins, get Prick.

i'm sure most of you know this but colossus of destiny isnt even a melvins recording.
it is a live recording of a band called noiseland arcade. [r.i.p.]
eh, members included buzzo and adam jones and some other people who i forgot their names, but yeah so if you didnt know now ya do.

and further data: the name of the video arcade in springfield in the simpsons was "noiseland arcade" wooohoo!

i asked adam about NLA once and he told me that something to do with their old manager or record label prevented their use of the band name and some other shit to where they had to put the experiment to rest... that was the first and only time during adam's chat appearance [toolarmy] that he sounded sincerely agitated.

I have been curious to see if I am the only one who doesn't get it; or one of the few that might..
Does anyone know the origin of the title of this release? As far as I know, the only other time I've heard this combination of words is the nickname/nom de plum/moniker of a railroad worker(or perhaps a hobo, no one's met him) that has worked for one of the freight companies for a long time and is one of the most prominent 'chalk artists'(a type of train/hobo art that consists of very simple designs and/or words that are made with the kind of chalk that freight train workers use to mark containers/trains with to tell other workers in other cities what that car is filled with, weight, or other important specific information).
Now this is a VERY small subculture of folks that know about this, and even smaller group of them even care enough to know certain names that people use, but who knows? Maybe it's a coincidence, maybe 'Collosus of Destiny' is reference to something or it's a commonly used term or whatever that I just don't get or am familiar with.
Can anyone help me figure this one out?

klump

someone said in an older thread, that they had seen it in the book "the road to california"

Michael

"Colossus of Destiny" is stolen directly from John Fante's fantastic novel, The Road to Los Angeles.  It is the name that the protagonist, Arturo Bandini, plans for his masterwork, the artistic culmination of his entire life.  An apt title for that particular album if you ask me.  John Fante was a HUGE influence on Charles Bukowski by the way; so if you are a fan of the Buk, definitely check out Fante (especially his early work from the 1930's...)
