I love how they're hypocritical bastards too. They gave The Chemical Brothers' Surrender a high rating, then when the next album came out, they start the review with "After the dissapointing flop of Surrender..."

The Melvins - A Senile Animal
Sludge metal collaboration with Big Business

December 13, 2006 - So let me get this straight - the Melvins, kings of sludge metal and ambassadors of all things musically deep, dark and heavy, have hired musicians Big Business to help record their latest record. Isn't that like being a multi-millionaire and winning the Super Lotto jackpot?

Melvins mainstays Dale Crover and Buzz Osborne hooked up with sludge sound monsters Coady Willis and Jared Warren (the two full-time members of Big Business) to create Senile Animal, the first Melvins album in four years. As the Melvins are no strangers to the revolving door of bass players, adding Warren on the bass makes the record so much heavier than anything the band has done in about a decade. The oddity of the pairing comes from the fact that Crover from the Melvins and Willis from Big Business are both drummers. Having two guitar players is one thing. Having two drummers is quite another.

But then again, the Melvins have never really been a band that is concerned about playing by the rules. And judging by the results here, the Melvins may have just spawned a trend, albeit one that will not have the same results when imitated by lesser musicians. On the end of the track "Civilized Worm", the dual percussionists release an onslaught of skin-bashing excess that would make even the late, great John Bonham sit up and take notice. The best effects of the two-drum ensemble can be heard on the track "You've Never Been Right", a blistering track that sounds like what would happen if Black Sabbath wrote speed metal songs. On the flip side, "The Mechanical Bride" is a track of slow, deliberate sludgy, distorted metal sounds. Its deliberate pace and slow, deep groove is classic Melvins.

After almost two decades of recording music, the Melvins have actually found a way to break new ground musically. Senile Animal is a solid recording and is definitely a record that all fans of the Melvins should own. For those who enjoy sonic experimentation, this is one that should be on the list of possible pick-ups. For those of you out there who like your music popular and easily recognizable by anyone who listens to popular or alternative radio stations, this one is probably best left on someone else's MP3 library.
