Best Melvins Bass Player

We havent seen best of Jared yet. He is great musician.

It's too soon to say w/ Jared. If we're judging on one album, I'd rank him 4th. There's definitely promise for great things to come, tho.

While I like Thrones even more than the Melvins (or probably any band at this point), I think Joe's contributions to the band, though great, are overshadowed by the two guys that followed him. It comes down to Kevin and Mark D. Both had a comparable run with the band, and I think Mr. Moo was the best fit. When I saw his interpretation of Night Goat live, I was absolutely blown.

Jared is an outstanding bass player.  I saw The Melvins live twice, and he didn't miss a note.   They even played old stuff on Ozma like "let God be your Gardener" and he played it with perfect timing.  He would probably have no problem playing any of Mark D's basslines from Stag.


I like Jared's contributions.  As some critics said, Big Business is pretty much all over (A) Senile Animal.  I guess some people think he's a little bit "too" involved, and want less Jared and more Buzzo, but I love 'em both!

jared  is a great bass player and an amazing lead singer and i really love this new line up, but in my opinion both kevin ass  both mark d were more influential in melvins songs of their period than jared in a senile animal's songs.
if you listen to stag or stoner witch, you can easily feel that and the same is if you listen to h.a.t.
maybe after 3 or 4 album with jared on bass i could change my opinion...

But Kevin is an entirely different bass player as well. His sound would be amazingly recognizable and present in ANY band.

I'm not as much of a fan of Jared's bass playing, but it's very effective with Coady's drumming in Big Business and most importantly his voice! His voice is the leading melody of all their stuff.

I'll also have to stick with Kevin, because he was different Melvins -bassist. It would have been great to see him continuing with Melvins but Jared is ok.

If Trevor would have stuck with the Melvins I think he would be the best Melvins bass palyer.

I dont know why some of you guys are voting bassists like JOE preston, Matt Lukin or lori black.
Joe Preston was lazy and, judging by live footage with him, forgot how to play songs mid performance. Sure he could make his bass sound good on their albums but that doesnt cut it for me.
Matt Lukin didnt write anything and buzz said himself couldnt play anything.
I didnt see any creativity in Lori Black Lorax.

I would have to say its a tie between Kevin and Mark. I feel that they display a good amount of Creativity, originality and Skill in their music. they did contribute alot in the songs and wrote their own.
And best fill in bass player by far is Trevor Dunn... followed by Sir David of coarse.

I would have to agree about all the old school bassists.  As a bass player myself I can appreciate Jared's ability, but I don't feel that the Big Biz boys fit with Melvins that well.  I actually prefer Here Come The Waterworks to either of the Melvins records they're on so far.  I think Kevin was by far the most unique and his creativity shot the Melvins into the stratosphere.  The Fool, the Meddling Idiot and Dr. Geek are two prime examples of just how delicious that noisy slide bass was, and anyone who can gyrate with such a deranged look in their eye, and a shop bell taped to the front of their bass is all right in my book.  For looks though I'd have to vote for Sir DSS with his '70s mop hair and big glasses on the Jelvins tour, he freaked me right out at that first New Year's Jelvins show with Adam Jones.
