I can well understand why performers get mad when lighting guys go flash crazy. It seems to be a common problem with in house lighting engineers. Im sure it would drive me mad. Even moreso as a drummer. Personally i really don't see the need for stupid lights and such effects when bands perform. I think almost any act would be far more enjoyable to watch just in natural, normal lighting without all the "fancy" colours.

Yeah, it can be a real distraction for the performer. When I saw Big Business last year, Jared asked the lighting guy not to turn the lights off, as he couldn't see the frets on his bass.

Yeah, there are very few bands I've seen where the lighting actually adds to performance rather than distracting from it.
The Black Angels come to mind.
