Have Dale or Buzz ever claimed to have been influenced by and/or fans of Big Black?  I remember reading some interview from the kevin era where Buzz said they liked albini until they found out he was talking shit about them.

Not that I remember. I do remember other people talking about Albino talking shit about Melvins or something, but I don't think I have ever read it myself. Not by Albini nor the Melvins.

Personally, if I'd like a band, and they I found out they would talk shit about me, or my band, whatever that means, I don't think I'd care that much. Especially when that guy is Steve Albini. It's part of who he is. Maybe David Yow can heal wounds between them.

Hmmm seems Albini has had a change of heart ...

That quote is not really shit talking.

Although, he can be pretty venomous & biting, Albini's usually a little more articulate
than just flinging stinky shit out his maw ... which nails even harsher & harder than
some simple neanderthalian shit-speak like,
"Those guys fucking suck king sized balls", or something like that

So, nah, not really out 'n out shit-speak ... but a loaded, back-handed dig none the less ...
the insinuation being at some earlier junction the Melvins were without doubt an example
of a, "band(s ) who would be enlightening to the audience, rather than merely fitting into existing expectations."
But now (2002 that is) ... at least in Albini's humble opinion, " ... this has changed a bit"
Would be interesting if he offered some specifics ... but his sub-text is clear: The Melvins aren't so enlightening as of late.
Absurd! But everyones' gotta opinion ...

Actually it dont really matter what he meant. Steve Albini is great producer but Buzz has more music in his middle finger than Steve in his whole body.

Knowing Albini's feelings towards major labels, I would say the reason he thinks this is because of the Atlantic years.

Mount Ambulance

Well his original endorsement that they speak of was an Albini wish list if he were
to book Lollapalooza ... so at least at it's height (is that travesty still dusting itself off every summer?)
that'd fall right into those Atlantic yrs. I believe they played the 2nd stage one year ...
I vaugely(drunkenly) recall seeing a outdoor Melvins show ... 'an that's the only
place I can imagine I saw them outside in the sun! Who knows mabey he's pals with Mark &
pissed they made him cry? Mabey he thinks they're resting on their laurals?
Mabey it was that time Buzz fed his dog all of Albini's spicy pork tacos ... mysteries of the universe ...

The Melvins only agreed to play Lollapalooza that year because Perry Farrell wasn't involved with it, apparently they're not too fond of that guy.
Hail, not fail.

not true.
but really, you got to take what albini says as a grain of salt.  his opinion tends to change over the years (just like Buzz).  their both extremely talented.

I never miss the melvins when they come to town just as I will never miss albini

He gets good drum sounds, but if he did hold an unfavorable opinion about the Melvins just because they signed with Atlantic, then that is a moronic reason. The Melvins deserve more exposure.

If he hates major labels so much then why did he produce engineer that Bush album?
