Before Kurt Cobain became a household name thanks to Nirvana, he was a teenage prankster in his hometown of Aberdeen, Washington. (Stars, they're just like us?) Melvins frontman Buzz Osbourne remembers the night in May 1986 that he and pal Cobain, 19, "were out spray painting graffiti all over town" — antics that eventually landed one of them in jail.
Telling the tale during Melvins' Divine Monkeyshines: Valentine's Day Special streaming event according to Ultimate Classic Rock, Osborne recalls Cobain getting busted and going to jail, while Osborne and their other compadre, former Melvins drummer Matt Dillard, got away.
"We walked around the corner of this bank and all of a sudden there's cops, a bunch of cops everywhere," Osborne remembered. "And we just take off running in different directions. All of a sudden, we heard errrrrck around the corner. They had nabbed Cobain somehow. Like he was hiding somewhere. And he went to the joint."
The future rock star stayed in jail overnight, arrested for spray painting the phrase "Ain't got no how whatchamacallit."
Osborne's favorite tag? "God is Gay," which ended up being the final line of the Nirvana song "Stay Away."
"You try to think of something that's gonna really burn all these people there," Osborne said, adding, "[Cobain]was actually a really good artist, so if he spray-painted a picture, it would really be good. But usually it was very dark humor and not very PC."

The Sunn concert lead amp Buzz Osborne used on the first two MELVINS albums has been stolen.      Please watch for it in your local pawn shop or your homeboy's crappy band's practice space.

NAPALM DEATH to release split
with The Melvins
3rd October, 2012

Brummie grind legends Napalm Death will be releasing a split with oddballs The Melvins. Bassist Shane Embury commented: "We recently released a split with Converge and we'd love to do more of that kind of thing. It's a great chance to work with bands we admire, and to play shows with some different people."
The split will include Napalm covering art rockers The Cardiacs. Continues Embury: "I've finally been able to do a cover of my favourite band, The Cardiacs. It's a real old one called 'To Go Off And Things' from 'The Seaside'. I'm being a bit fussy with it as it's a labour of love, but it's sounding pretty crazy. I want to put it out as a download too, to try and raise some money for Tim Smith, who's very ill at the moment. It breaks up the cycle of doing albums. We all want to get back to a bit of the vinyl thing we loved back in the day, and it gives us an opportunity to do something a bit more different."

I still haven't fully recovered from AMAZON enough to give a review.

well,   I'll give you my take and let Mount Ambulance, Armofinfant, Jozzy, EGO and anyone else who was there chime in.

got in town early after my copilot pussed out on me at the last minute because he was "too tired" to go to the show.  so in my pissed-off state I took off for detroit probably 3 hours earlier than I should have.   so I wasted my extra time by throwing my money away at the greektown casino downtown. headed over to the venue about a half hour before doors and ran into moss and dale buying booze and junk food at the hood party store across the street.  they had 3 bags of chips, cookies, booze, bread, etc.    I asked moss if morning star rising was playing and his answer was "maybe" I then asked if dale would be on drums and again got a "maybe".   

got in and B-lined it for the merch table.  introduced myself to Walsby and chatted for a few. he told me a little about his new band.   seemed like a hell of a guy. picked up one of the Grumpy's 3 cd sets ($50, ouch!), the comic book and a couple posters. Walsby was kind enough to hold it all for me behind the table after telling me he had room for "me and me only"
I thought that called for a generous tip.  there was still basically nobody in the place so when dale walked by a few minutes later with an LA dodgers shirt on I grabbed his attention and asked him about the manny ramirez trade.  that seemed to spark his interest because he then stopped and spent a few minutes talking about the dodgers, tigers, etc. with me.  he seemed very passionate and knowledgable about the dodgers and glad to find someone to share his thoughts on the subject.  I was, of course, slightly overwhelmed to be talking to the legend that is dale crover about something I have interest in as well. it was like we were both fighting to get the next thought out on ramirez, the dodgers, and baseball in general.  but I thought it best to let him go about his business so after a few minutes I told him I didn't want to keep him any longer and he said "take care" or something and wandered away.

before I get to the actual sets I'll mention the fine folks from the board I met or re-met.   armofinfant: always a treat.  although I was disappointed he did not let me sit on his shoulders during big business. EGO the living planet: fine human being although by the end of the show he seemed to be about 2, 2 1/2 sheets to the wind. Jozz: only met briefly right before the melvins set.  next time we'll try to cross paths earlier.   Mount Ambulance and his crew: really cool guy. someone I could relate to.  hope to see you again at a future show Mount. I would have liked to have sat and dumped down a few beers with you afterwards if we both didn't have a million miles to home.  next time.

now to the music.  morning star rising eased in.  I think most people didn't realize a set was starting. the just thought some hairy biker looking dude was sound checking.    then toshi came out and did his thing.  some guy next to me said "is the asian guy playing anything or just fixing pedals?"  I didn't bother to answer.  when dale walked out  people realized this was a planned event and began to cheer.  dale, of course, made the set with his hybrid version of SafetyThird over moss and toshi's soundscape. I thought it was cool but I'd take a porn set anyday over that. 
next big business.   ridiculously long break between msr and bb.  the crowd was gettng anxious.   people were chanting "big business!  big business!"  until jared finally came out and apologized for the delay. same set as before although I had a hard time with their set because I got corraled into a corner and couldn't see shit.  they seemed plagued with technical difficulties and apologized for it a couple times.  but all in all better than most bands I've seen live. I bailed for a bathroom break and fresh beer before their last song after reading that the break was really short between big business and melvins.   I read wrong.   another looooong break between bands.  now to the MELVINS.

I've seen the melvins many times now over the years.   at least a dozen.  this set was one of the tightest.  allow me to loosely quote grim by saying if you have any questions about this line-up go see this tour. it will silence the naysayers.
dale and coady have got it down pact right now.  the drumming was impecable. really though, across the board the set was impecable.   amazing sound, amazing timing.  plus all 4 guys seemed completely into the moment.   after seeing the melvins on an off night once or twice in the past I'll say this was the opposite end of the spectrum.  I stood in front of buzz and I'll agree with everyone who says he has this uncanny way of seeming like he is looking right at YOU.  kinda like those pictures of jesus where no matter where you are in the room it looks like his eyes are on you.  maybe its the hair.
but anyway, they tore through the same set.   by the time they got to the (A)SA meddly it was about 130degrees F in the place. the sweat was rolling. I expected a dirtier version of my generation.  this was slow and bluesy, but clean.  it sounded damn good actually with dale and coady whinning out the vocals.   then the star spangled banner which everyone in my area sang along with.  then... BORIS.    oh man.     without a doubt, the best version of boris ever.  two drummers and 3 vocalists make that song.  there were indeed goosebumps up and down my spine.  dale and coady stayed in during the ending for an occasional double "THUMP!",  buzz dragging out the "boris knows.... and boris likes it all."    jared with the neck of his bass under his throat making his now famous whale calls.   finally only buzz left standing.   he thanked everyone for coming out and gave some advice on purchasing lottery tickets and that was it.
I was ready for 4 or 5 more songs.  some jerky behind me yelled "DISINVITE!!"  over and over again when the show was obviously over.    said my goodbyes to jozz, EGO, and ambulance butdidn't see armofinfant again.
drove home the 2 hours wishing I was heading for Cleveland.   next time.

SLIPPED A MICKEY: Decibel Goes to Disneyland with the Melvins

It's Wednesday afternoon, and the tram from the Daisy Duck parking structure to
Disneyland proper is teeming with humanity, flip-flops and fanny packs. Men, women,
and children of all shapes and sizes are brimming with the kind of anticipation that only
comes from years of merciless cultural conditioning. Meanwhile, Decibel's knees are
crammed up against the back of the seat in front of us. It's a feeling we'll get used to
over the course of the next six hours. Like many of the rides at Disneyland, the tram is
not designed to accommodate anyone over six feet tall. Suddenly, a morbidly obese
bald man in his 50s turns to his wife/sister/sow and says, "Did you see that on Regis &
Kelly this morning? The alligator crawled right through the doggie door!"
In situations like this, the mind tends to wander. We think of that story we read in
Radar a couple of years ago about the college kids who wear the character costumes at
Disneyland; how a Snow White avoids turning up out of context at Space Mountain via a
secret underground tunnel system where perpetually hung-over Mickeys, Minnies and
Tarzans spend their lunch breaks drinking, screwing and vomiting in costume. We think
about the dream we had the other night, in which Walt Disney's disembodied cryogenic
head expressed its disapproval as we played "Stand By Me" on a toy piano: "What are
you, some kind of faggot?"
Oh, Uncle Walt, you always did have a way with words.
But we're snapped out of our reverie by a middle-aged Nazi barking on the intercom.
"No lap-sitting, eating or drinking on the tram!" We immediately shove a piece of
gum in our mouth just to spite this underpaid fascist. And then we arrive at The Place
Where Dreams Come True.

I've already mentioned, the NOLA show was great. Danny and Justin's ladies had flown in, so the FOH was well stocked with Stellas. Although Buzz (Melvins) had decided not to join in on a song (telling me that the band would sound just fine without him), he did share some rather humorous stories backstage. One of them was how Adam, tour manager, Mary Jo, and he had been invited to ride along on patrol with a Texas Ranger in Austin, and were later taken to a certain location (I think it's called Texas) where they could fire a plethora of weapons... and shoot to their hearts' content. They even got to experience the lawman 'light-up' someone, but, unfortunately, this wasn't a Tool enthusiast. I told Buzz that, while this was pretty cool, when I was in Houston, an astronaut with NASA who liked my newsletters asked Laralee and I if we wanted to go for a ride on the next space-shuttle launch and watch them perform middle school-level experiments while orbiting the earth. Before he could respond, a couple of female Melvins fans were escorted into Adam's dressing room with hopes of getting a photo taken with him (Buzz). Adam was all smiles, telling them how, when hanging out with Buzz, kids were always coming up to him (Buzz), some even wearing Tool shirts, wanting his autograph, but not aware of who he (Adam) was. Knowing that Adam (not Buzz) was waiting for a couple of bottles of "Lucid" to arrive, I decided to hang around a bit longer. Hell, a shot of "Lucid" and box of Triskets and you've got a party. But the bottle never arrived, so I moved on to greener pastures (Actually I was glad it didn't show up, because I was going to be viewing fractal geometry on Breck's laptop later on the bumpy bus.)

according to the italian group ZU's website Buzz, Dale and Toshi recorded some collaborations to be released on a future ZU album in 08.

best show since the POTRE tour.   it was beautiful.  I almost cried.

good lord almighty the new 4-way MELVINS have gotten TIGHT.   same setlist with an added whale serenade by Jared to close things out.   venue was interesting,  I'd say roughly the size of a 2 car garage where the band actually played.  I'm a little short on time now since I've got to get rolling on to cleveland.   full review later.

nice to meet the one and only EGO the living planet.  but I saw no signs at all of ALL 7' of armofinfant.

damn. is this some sort of commentary on the advanced girth of Buzz and crew?

check out this fairly recent pic of dale and coady's drum set-up.     is this new?  I don't recall this being the set-up for the (a) senile animal tour.     were there the big floor drum thingamajiggys between them?   how about the overload of cymbals on coady's side and lack thereof of on dale's side?   

seems like this is more of the "monster drumkit" they spoke of prior to the recording of (a)sa.

prior to the fall tour I figured it would be nice for us all to dream a little bit.  kinda like buying a lottery ticket, you spend two days planning how you're going to spend all that cash.  then you get shit on and win NOTHING.

but to me at least MELVINS are a cult band.  and a cult band thats been around for 20 some-odd years shouldn't have to be tied to all the staple songs night after night.   the bulk of the people who go to a MELVINS show are most-likely familiar with their material so they don't really need a greatest hits retrospective. 

so spell out your ideal setlist for this tour.  say 15 or so songs.   try to be realistic though.  no "the OZMA album in its entirety!"s.      pick a variety of songs that they might actually play.

ready......  GO!
