Title: Melvins in Australia!
Post by: Mash on December 02, 2008, 04:28:11 PM
Hey guys,
Fantomas are coming out with Serj Tankian in January, doing Director's Cut in its entirety, etc etc, which is exciting enough (cept the supporting Tankian part) ... but NOW I'm pissing-my-pants excited, cos the Ding Dong Lounge (http://www.dingdonglounge.com.au) have said Melvins will be doing a show there when Fantomas comes out! WOWEE!
So yeah, does anyone have any inside info, some specifics of what Melvins we can expect? Will Big Business be down here with them? Will there be other Melvins shows around the country? I need to know these things!

Ok, so according to another board I frequent, looks like this Fantomas tour is with Dale on drums, so that prolly means the Melvins gig will be with Dunn on bass, yeah?

I'm pretty sure just Jared will still be on bass, for the melvins.

I find it hard to believe Dale will be playing drums for Fantomas, but who knows.
I also heard a rumour Fantomas are playing the BDO but they aren't advertised on Ipecac, but the support shows are.

I figured since Fantomas was coming down, they only needed to bring Dale and they could play some shows with Trevor on bass as a three piece. Personally I doubt the BB boys will be coming for a handful of such small shows though- not sure they could even fit both drum kits onstage!

Anyway- got tix to Fantomas and should be at the Melb. Melvins show as well!  :D

Well I'll be damned! ...Fantomas are indeed playing the BDO with Dale on drums.
Glad I don't have to go to that to see Fantomas anyway!

I'm still guessing Trevor will be playing bass at the Melvins shows since those three will be down here for the Fantomas shows anyway, though I couldn't care less! Just CANNOT wait to see them!!!  8)

So it'll be Buzz, Dale & Trev - with that in mind, do you reckon we can expect a different set to the one currently doing the rounds with the BB boys in the band, which is mostly made up of material from the last two albums?
Title: Re: Melvins in Australia!

if it is those three, i think they could do alot of lysol and houdini since trevor played those shows.
...whatever they play i'm sure it will be fuckin awesome anyway!  :D

They will no doubt sell out in no time, so even us Melbournians will be lucky to score tickets.

Yeah, I didn't mean it literally - I still don't know the exact date of the show but I started looking at flights around the end of Jan as the likely dates for a Melbourne show are 27,28 and 29 of January.

I think (and hope) that I should be alright for tickets. I've lived in Melbourne for a few years and have friends who could go and buy tickets when they go on sale. I guess Ding Dong can hold about 250+/- people so it will probably sell out within a week or so.

I just called Ding Dong -

Melvins will be playing on Tuesday, 27th January. They said tickets will go on sale sometimes during Jan.

Now lets hope for a Sydney side show...

doubt it, due to the aussie dollar goin to shit in the last while and perth being a million miles from anywhere (literally). spoke to my sister and old work colleagues over the past week  (whom live in perth) and their sayin band after band are canceling the perth leg of thier tours in the next few months, and a few bands on the the bdo fest also arnt going over. so i wouldnt be expecting it, but you never know. but hey, at least you will be in beautiful weather.

id use the word hottest rather warmest, doubt you'll see much below 30

but as nice as perth is, its a bit boring, basically a city. take a train south for 30minutes to a place called fremantle, and set up camp there. beautiful vibrant port city, full of bars, cafes (cappucino strip), an old famous market, street performers etc. and the fishingboat harbour (where you'll find a statue of bon scott). not far from beaches. as a tourist or whatever your up to, you wont want to leave.

if your there for a while you'll want to head up north of the state where the natural settings are quite amazing. but youll need to see a tourist info, ive only seen photos myself and heard stories from european travellers.

how long you there?
Title: Re: Melvins in Australia!
Post by: Smoghler on December 17, 2008, 03:47:41 PM
Yeah, I'm aware of the hot temperatures. I guess it will hit me like a smack in the face, but fortunately I don't have to do shit when I'm there  8)

Our plan is to stay in Pert/Fremantle for an indefinite time, perhaps heading south to see the Wave Rock (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wave_Rock). After that, we are thinking about traveling the coast up north all the way to Darwin. When we're there we're thinking about crossing the outback to the south/east of Australia to visit some relatives in Adelaide, Carnes and Sydney. To wrap it all up: traveling the east coast...

It sounds very ambitious, but the above setting is just a rough planning of what we have in mind; nothing is certain.

We're not sure how long we're staying, but the plan is to travel as long as possible. Basicly it all depends on the finances  :)

Ok, that might be an idea. What are the real "musts" in Melbourne?

I reckon you should definitely do Fraser Island and the Whitsundays up in QLD if you have the time and money. Queensland is beautiful and is perfect if you like hot tropical weather and the beach. I'd also recommend a week in the Byron Bay area (Lennox head, brunswick heads or Byron).

Melbourne is ok. Lots of wannabe rockstar wankers though, you'll see what I'm talking about when u go there. God these people used to annoy me when I lived there. Musts in Melbourne are probably the Great Ocean Road down to the 12 apostles (a day trip out of Melb), hmm....   there are quite a few museums and art galleries if ur into it, during summer there are always festivals of some sort so it's always good to check out what's going on before you go there. Oh and the weather is horrible.

Never been to the west coast but I've only heard good things from people who've traveled there.

Yes Queensland has many beautiful places. I was fortunate to live there almost 3 years. Beaches are as nice as you can get. Fraser Island is a must see as is the Great Barrier Reef.  Snorkeling there was a million times better than the Caribbean.  And the water is nothing like I've ever seen before.

Melbourne is a very cool city.  As for being full of rockstar wannabes, I only saw Tim Rogers stumble out of a pub called The Perseverance on a Sunday morning around 1030am.  I thought that was pretty rock and roll, he slurred something to me as I walked passed.  Made me laugh at his state

It sounds very ambitious, but the above setting is just a rough planning of what we have in mind; nothing is certain.

As an old Chinese fisherman once said: if you don't know where you are going, there's a good chance you will end up somewhere else :D

does that fisherman go by the supposed name of j. peterman?

I wonder if this will be "normal" Melvins. I wouldn't be too happy driving 5 hours to see a silly joke set.  :x

With an attitude like that, I advice you to stay home, and whine like a little girl.

I hope they will be playing CoD, for 3 hours long.

It would have been nice to see a more mixed set list . . .but Ding Dong is so small, it will be great to see them. I wonder if tickets will sell out, and if so....how fast.

Trevor probably doesn't know all the bass parts, except Houdini obviously.

I'd happily pay $100 too. $50 is nothing for tickets compared to other shows i've been to. I just hope the Ding Dong has better air conditioning this time around. It was damn hot in there last time they played.

Goes without saying...   this show is gonna cost me about $200 with flights etc but I think it's money well spent. BUT $50 may be a bit pricey for people who have only heard about the band and want to check them out.

Anyways, I'm only getting to Melb around 18:30 (I beg you Virgin Blue - Just land on time for once!) so will be taking the Skybus to the city to catch up with my friend Tim for dinner and a couple of drinks before we head to Ding Dong. If anyone wants to meet for a couple of drinks / joints before the show let me know.

No way, far too many Docker supporters!

As far as I'm concerned Melbourne is a must if visiting Australia. No, I don't live there.

melbourne is nice alright
but does it have a statue of bon scott?
i think not,
no where is as cool a place if it doesnt have a bon scott statue  :P

Melbourne does have AC/DC Lane (and the Melvins played at Cherry Bar there).

I got my tickets for the Melbourne show, sort of. I don't get this whole "you must be the credit card holder to pick up the tix on the night". I used someone elses card who is deffinately not coming. I've got some form that i think can give me the authorisation to pick them up. It's actually stressing me out quite a bit. I don't wont to turn up on the night and them not give me my tickets.

no idea since i don't live in auckland...
if you know of any smaller venues, check them out.

i only know of the melb. and sydney shows and i think buzz is good friends with the owners of both the places they are playing- at least i'm pretty sure he is with the ding dong's owner anyway.

There is DEFINITELY a show in Auckland- there's a date (14Jan from memory) on Trevor's MySpace, and probably listed on the Melvins' as well, though none of the Melvins shows have venues listed for them.

I think i have. I just called Moshtix and they were actually really nice and helpful. They said they'd re send my confirmation email but i don't really need it. They also said i just have to get the credit card authorisation form filled out and take it on the night and all will be good. Such a relief, i was really quite stressed about it all.

So yeah, i will definately be there for the late show (unless something else goes wrong). I considered going to the early show too but it's going to be the same set and it will be my first day back at work for the year so i mightn't make it in time so decided not too.

I thought the early show would be difficult for alot of people to get to, which I'm guessing is why it didn't sell out as quickly as the 'first' show did.

Too bad BloodDuster aren't doing the support at the later show...

Looks like I'm not gonna make it to the early show...    too much of a hassle sorting things with work, changing flights and of course spending another $120 for flight changes and ticket to the show...
I guess I would have put the effort if they'd play a different setlist but considering I'm gonna see them in Sydney 5 days prior to Melbourne I think I can live with seeing them only once in Melbourne.

Typical bloody New Zealand, never capitalising on great live music opportunities.

Although that said, Brant Bjork and the Bros are going to be playing Dunedin in like a month, and the Dirtbombs have played Dunedin as well, so why the fuck couldn't we get the Melvins down here??

They could play in my garage. I have an awesome garage.

well, i'd be more than happy if there was a really small crowd at the early show- but i'm sure people will buy tix on the night if they are still available then, and it won't end up being that many less than the sold out show.

even if they do end up playing identical sets, they'll be different in ways- either by having a better spot to see/hear from, better mix for one show or the other, less staggering drunks around you, etc. plus those tiny 'performance' differences that make me so happy to see them as many times as I possibly can.

i feel like a little kid waiting for christmas to come!!!  :D

I hear ya...   only unlike the melvins, christmas does come every year!

One week till the Sydney show...

And Ding Dong is usually open till very late so I imagine the "afterparty" would just be another night at Ding Dong only with more people.

I've decided I'm gonna rock up at the airport earlier on the 27th and see if I can jump on an earlier flight without paying the $80 for the flight change. This way I'll make it to Melbourne on time for the first show as well.

the dingdong is open til 3am i think, but i don't know what the deal will be to stick around for the afterparty if the melvins are hanging there for a while.
...the 400 capacity is the part that makes me wonder.

there was an afterparty after the last fantomas show at the palace, but if you didn't have a pass, you were promptly outed by security pretty soon after the show.

i can't hook you up with one since i'm only going to the 2 melb. shows, but i can maybe hook you up with those if you don't already have them organised- and there is actually signed melb. posters available.

anyone have any idea what other merch could possibly be at these few shows?!?
i'm guessing not much i don't have already, but i'd hate there to be something i wasn't expecting and not have the cash on me

if i do manage to catch up with buzz, trevor or dale for a chat, i really don't want to be hasslng them to sign things for me so if there's signed posters in Melb, it will save me the hassle!  8)
...i would LOVE to get them to sign the live houdini for me though, and get trevor to sign my debs and cents as well, but he seems even more sketchy on fans than buzz!

A few pages back there were a few NZ folk expressing their disappointment.

The Sydney show is probably just finishing up, so no doubt MJ or SpaceFarm will give us the lowdown- esp. if one scored an extra of those lovely posters for the show.

Sydney show is tonight so I hope to put a review and some pics tomorrow sometimes during the day...

Unfortunately I'm not gonna record the show. Was trying to get a video camera from a friend but it's too complicated and to be honest I'm not sure if I want to record...  just want to enjoy the show. Roughly 7 hours now before The Melvins take stage -

Melvins shirt - Check
Listening to Houdini to get amped - Check
Beer money for tonight - Check
Joint - Check
Merch money - Check

I think I'm ready!!!   :D

Thanks, I will!

I just read this Fantomas interview with Buzz on Drum Media (a free music publication here in Sydney, equivalent of Beat magazine in Melbourne). He is asked about Lombardo's absence and Dale replacing him:

This tour sees Fantomas playing with a slightly retooled lineup, with drummer Dave Lombardo being replaced by Dale Crover, best known as Osborne's right hand in The Melvins. As to the reason for Lombardo's absence, Osborne says he's "doing nothing at all. He just doesn't want to do it. He doesn't want to play with Fantomas"

- What, ever again? This doesn't mean that Lombardo is out of the band, does it?

"I have no idea about any of that, but he certainly didn't want to do any of this", says Osborne. "I have no idea. I would never venture to guess what's going through his brain. He's extremely busy doing absolutely nothing. That's the best way to look at it. We all find it weird. But whatever. You see, he's in Slayer. And when you 're in Slayer , tou've sold your soul to the devil. That's what he's done. When you kiss the goat, you have to french kiss the goat".

Interesting...   I wounder if that's true or is it just Buzz talking shit again  :)

at least i had the chance to see fantomas with lombardo a few times. the delerium cordia tour gave ol' dave some really awesome chances to show his stuff. but regardless, thats one of the best quotes ive read in a damn long time.

Post by: The Fool on January 22, 2009, 01:04:14 AM
been wondering why lombardo didn't play the director's cut shows, but i just assumed he was doing slayer or something but seems that's not the case.

you can't really tell if buzz is ever telling the truth, but i'd say there's alot of truth to his comments there- otherwise he would have just said he's touring/recording with slayer...

Oh yeah show was fucking awesome...what's new? 7 years later and I finally got to see them again, worth the wait...it was a very small venue so it was great to see these guys only a couple metres in front.

Sorry, no pics - I'll keep it short. There was a video camera though and plenty of photos from other people.

I was expecting  the "Houdini Live" set, but they opened with Hag Me!!!! That song is punishing live...happy to have witnessed it. Still can't believe Buzz's tone, he used the aluminum guitar. Joan of Arc was funny at the quite part, Sky Pup ruled and so did Lizzy ("died on a toilet"), Hooch was great and Set Me Straight/DCH stood out...of course Honey Bucket too...everyone recognized Night Goat of course.

Melvins closed with Goin' Blind, the whole thing felt pretty short but I had forgotten about Spread Eagle Beagle. This song doesn't suck......when played live!!!!
Buzz was drumming, then he would walk aver and smash Dale's kit which was very funny to watch...then he ran off the stage and that was it for him for the night. Dale was like animal on drums, doing his own thing by himself and another guy on stage hitting the fuck out of the reverbed drums for what seemed like 10 minutes. A pleasure to watch.

Short but very sweet, I just hope it's not another 7 years until Australia see them again! Hopefully with the full band.

Just got in from the Ding Dong show (late) . . .wow.

Opened with Hag Me . . .possibly the loudest kick drum I have ever heard.
Amazing version of Spread Eagle Beagle . . .

they played Honey Bucket twice. I thought this was a little odd (as it is not my favorite track by them), but fun anyway.

Okie From Muskogee was a fun closer.

i thought they played honeybucket twice at the late show, but wasn't sure if i was just getting confused from seeing them twice in one day and having a few drinks.
...both shows were fucking great anyway!

scored one of signed ding dong posters as well as one of the signed fantomas posters from the jan25 show :D

It's 4.30am...

Just got back, I;m drunk

I'm meeting a friend for coffe at 7.30am and then fly back to Sydney at 10.00am. 2nd show was real fun, I guess it was just a bit too hot in there. Got some nice photos, will post a review and upload photos when I get back to Sydney. Tey did play Honey Bucket twice and finished with Okie which was cool... I was really hoping they would finish with something not from Houdini in Sydney too. Was really hoping for With Teeth to be honest...

Anyway I'm drunk...

Be back tomorrow!
