I have read several reviews for this album that state this was released by Melvins as a joke Just wondering if this was true. I love the album no matter what, I was just curious. Either way, I think it was a brilliant idea to play a "noise/experimental" show and then release it as a live albun.
i don't think it was a joke and the fact Buzz considers COD as one of his favourite Melvins albums proves that.

I donno ... Eye Flys ... it's brutal sure ... but more than simply that ... IMO it gains alot of its' charm also that it is birthed from the 50 min malestorm that preceeds it ... perfect flow ... it just works ... kinda like the 2x4 shows w/ DSS noise intros ... or the bass intro to Manky ...

not sure if i consider the eye flys version of cod as a climax or a relief of a 50+ minute noisefest, i'd go for the latter.

nice dust collecting ratio 0.2 inch/month. you do use months there, right? taking the detroit climate into account, that seems about correct. if you allow me to make a small correction i'd say it's been 391 days since you last spun it, or someone's been cleaning in between.
I've never thought this album is as obtuse as most seem to ... I listen to it once every 2-3 months or so ... if it was the only "noise" cd I had it would surely be listened to more ... thou inbtwn I have heaps of other stuff that fits that bill ... Masonna, Wolf Eyes, Failing Lights, Throbbing Gristle, Torso, Merzbow, Bastard Noise ... and on and on ... I guess if you don't dig "noise" you probably won't dig this ... head & shoulders above Prick to these ears ...
It's all about the vicious guitar feedback before Eye Flys drops.

if you can't get into wolf eyes, which is pretty much the pop version of harsh noise, you're probably not going to get into it at all. CoD isn't even really "noise" genre music. it's cacophonous, but it isn't completely noise. it has more in common with throbbing gristle or smegma than with merzbow.

maybe 'getting' is a big word. i've seen them a couple of times and did enjoy it some times, other times i didn't. it often depends on my own mood.

Wolf eyes sucked it up when I saw live. Harsh noise is an aquired taste. I can only take so much, but I love making it.
I have most of The Melvins stuff, and I bought COD not long after it first came out, but I couldn't make it through one listening. I didn't even know "Eye Flys" was on there. I ended up selling it. I have gotten into some drone stuff lately, so maybe I would appreciate it more these days. From what I remember it was mostly electronic bleeps and noise. Does it have guitar noise on there too? Drums?

hey norecess ... yeah, there might be some Wolf Eyes that may fit your bill ... they kinda fluctuate btw Harsh Noise type stuff & more creepy atmospheric stuff ... I dig it all ... thou I like that they switch it up for variety ... check out their new one "Always Wrong" ... and the compainion release "Completely Wrong" ... some of the best stuff they've released imo ... good mix ... the harsh is full tilt but there is quiet stuff too ... more on "Completely Wrong" thou ... Actually checkout Failing Lights (Connelly from Wolf Eyes) its' more on the less abusive side of things ... or the Haunting (Connelly & his wife) ... and Dead Machines (Olson & wife) ... yeah, dig into those ... Dead Machines are kinda up the quiter alley ... creepy as fuck but not so harsh (most of the time anyway) ...

btw, while we're on the subject, got my first (sort of) merzbow release in the mail last weekend: syr8 feat. mats gustafsson and merzbow. i also got one of the now most brutal and violent records in my collection: the olatunji concert (last coltrane recording). not gonna give a complete review but holy shit, at some points at sounds like an elephant battle or something, so brutal. the (multiple) drums are amazing (rashied ali r.i.p.), and i can't help but visualize coltrane as a dying man, blowing his guts out one last time...

Wouldn't that make you allergic to the Melvins? Adam Jones has played with them a lot over the years and is on a handful of studio releases as well as live recordings. He's best friends with King Buzzo, and Buzzo has played with Tool as well. Not to mention Divorced.
Personally I happen to like Adam Jones' contributions to the records both studio and live that he has played on. I am also a big fan of Tool so I guess that explains it.

In my mind, I imagine Adam Jones loaded up his Virus

the show.
The alternative if it's your suggestion, is that there was
an open mic at the show and a girl from the audience spoke
into it during their set, which is a very interesting supposition
unless the mic was running through his synth allowing him
to capture it and play it back as a sample.
It is conceivable though, because the band was said to be running
through the Virus allowing him to manipulate them in real time.
So, this is one for the ages, someone will have to ask Adam or Buzz
for the definitive answer.

Now, on Honky, there was a lot of synth work used by all of the musicians at one time or another. In the COD album, did everyone have some kind of sampler/ sequencer/ or synth machine running independently of Adam Jones' virus (which would then get all tweaked and muddied by his machine)? Also, is this a soundboard recording or are their mics picking all of this crazy stuff up and mixed later? And where is the fuxing documentary video of this performance?!

COD sucks. I will forever not like this album. It's interesting as a one off "Hmm that's interesting" sorta deal, and I'm sure it would have rocked live.
But, it was my first Melvins album and nearly my last.

I thought about the idea of music and what it means to play it (or hear it) from a completely different perspective after this album.
