I twittered Coady, to see what was going on in the Big Biz/Melvins world, to which he replied: "working on new Melvins right now. Recording starts feb. 1st. I think it's gonna be a good one. "

I like how most of the people on the bizboard are from here.
You also like drunk texting people after drinking yourself into oblivion, with your girlfriend in the room right next to you!
So Shnookers, what's your point?

Folks...we've hit post#13.
and the new record will be similar to the last two, with people saying, "Strange how this sounds like nothing I've heard before (but in a GOOD way."
And then there will be people crying about the lack of Rutmanis on the record.
And there will be people crying about the stupid TOOL influence on their new "Civilized Worm" track.
And some people will wish for the days of Mark D. or Lorax or Preston to return, just to show the new batch of Snivlem fans what it's like to REALLY rock.
And most will wonder, aloud, "Why the effing heck is this not on 180 Gram Vinyl, yo?"
And one guy will think this would sound, like, so totally rad (with a bit of awesome) if it was all, like, dub reggae, y'heard? Boiy?!
And then we'll acquiesce to the inevitable, and mutter to ourselves, "I wish I could put an album out this fucking good."

Toshi roams the internet....Someone should send him a copy of Stoner Witch or Lysol for the reference material!
Not really concerned with what the reason is, just as long as the drums are audible and half decent - not buried. Although I can respect the fact they probably had a much bigger studio budget back in those days I guess.
I don't know much about sound engineering but to my damaged ears I find the drum sound on the last two albums to be pretty good. They still dominate to a degree. I suppose there's more emphasis on vocals lately. I think Jareds bass should be turned up however.

he should play a different sounding bass too. the jazz bass to me sounds shitty with alot of distortion. a p-bass has always sounded great with the melvins.

Yep. Jazz pickups just don't have that grab-you-in-the-balls growl that the P-Bass' humbucker dishes out. Part of that is pickup placement too. On a Jazz you have to crank the neck pickup and just barely dial in the bridge pickup to add some definition. The P just hits that sweet spot automatically.

I've had a fender p-bass for years, and with the right pedal and amp...good lord does it have presence. I'm taking about watching the airwaves vibrate in front of you presence.
Of course, it could be that he's focusing more on harmonizing and complex lyrics, as opposed to a larger bass presence. Also, with the addition of Toshi, others are allowed to shine whereas before he could take center stage (along side Cody, so half-center in this case).
Here we go!

That's why I don't own a car :)
im not a huge vinyl collector... I got a few melvins ones though. how often do i listen to them? barely ever.
Why would any sane person collect vinyl? It's only a HUNDRED YEAR OLD TECHNOLOGY!
The true collectors only collect wax cylinders.
Vinyl sounds great, often better than CDs and it's easy to clean. Also, from a collecting standpoint it has better artwork than CDs. It tends to retain it's value better too.
Don't drink the kool-aid Ego. Vinyl sounds crackily. It does not sound better. Take a $100 turntable and a $100 dollar cd player, and the cd player will sound better. You want cracky noises in your music? Use a vinyl filter on winamp.
Retains its value better? Not for the most part. Go to any Thrift store, and check out the tons of vinyl you can get on the cheap.
Art looks better? Blow up your cd jacket to 12 inches and your fine.
Vinyl will still be around long after CDs have gone the way of the cassette. If you have a decent turntable it won't sound crackly (that happens with cheap turntables and when monkeys don't take care of their vinyl), and it will sound twice as good as the CD version. I've yet to hear something on vinyl that sounded worse than the CD version.
I am of the opinion that vinyl is for collecting purposes only.
unless of course you live in the year 1982.

I have to agree with the people saying cd's are better than vinyl. Vinyl sounds like shit and it's a pain in the ass to deal with. However it is great for collectors.

good one.
my new rule is that im not buying vinyl unless its an amazing find at a decent price or if its something special that I cant get on c.d.
Fuck vinyl and fuck CD's. We have goddamn pipes linking the world pumping awesome into our faces at the click of a button. I choose awesome pipes.
Vinyl does not sound as good as it should on digital stereo systems. It sounds better on the early ones from the '80's when vinyl was still a mainstay format. A good amount of systems made in the '90's after the "CD Revolution" do not have the guts for vinyl and clicks and pops are more prevelant than they should be.
But get an old analog '70's system and vinyl sounds bad ass. The best thing is these are the systems you can find in thrift stores and flea markets for cheap that people don't want anymore but work fine. I prefer vinyl over CD myself.
Fester. I love you too, but I'm gonna have to call bullshit on you too...
Those of you who think vinyl sounds like shit I can only asume are listening on shit stereos. I can listen to all my vinyl on cd and a/b them. They ALL sound better on vinyl. As far as buying vinyl only to collect? What a waste. As far as Buzz' opinions on vinyl, to my knowledge he only ever said he doesn't collect it himself and doesn't care what he listens to music on, he never said his music sounds better on CD, and even if he did, he'd be wrong and that's okay. I still love him 'cause he's Buzz. Anyhow though this is a huge digression from the real topic here, which Coady has updated us on this evening:

I'm 90% sure he did in an interview around the time that NWB came out. It seems like he said that everyone in the industry will tell you that cds are better except for these Steve Albini types.
Quote from: MrLuck87 on February 05, 2010, 01:18:02 AMthese Steve Albini types.
You mean the types of engineers that record really great sounding records? I think Albini is a total nutter, but no one records drums as well as he does. As far as sounds go, I'd side with Albini before I'd side with Buzz. Analog is better, plain and simple. Listen to Lysol and tell me that that album doesn't have a better sound than modern Melvins records.
albini knows how to get a good sound for sure.
his shellac album "at action park" sounds amazing on the record player.
I just think some albums sound alot shittier on vinyl. especially when its a really thin floppy vinyl like some led zeppelin records I have. lysol sounds great on vinyl, but I think its equal to the c.d. version.

That's most likely a case of poor mastering when it was originally mastered for vinyl in the '70s, and a superior remaster for CD done sometime in the '80s when it was first released on CD. I would say that the newly remastered Beatles records sound superior to my old vinyl, but if they took those new remasters and mastered them for vinyl they would sound better, especially if they were 180g or heavier. There's no doubt that there's a wide spectrum of quality in vinyl, whereas CDs are what they are, red book audio. But my statement stands, I don't own any vinyl that sounds inferior its CD counterpart.

Albini is hit and miss. He did a great job with High on Fire and The Jesus Lizard but man he really dropped the ball on the Melt Banana records. Their new stuff really does sound better. Plus, didn't Albini finally switch to digital anyway?
Lysol was a very different album than Nude with Boots. I really can't imagine them recording both of those albums the same way. Different sounding production on each album is also part of The Melvins charm.
If you listen to NWB on an expensive system you can hear it's various flaws (technically speaking). Maybe that's what adds to it or whatever but Lysol is such a well mixed and warm sounding album. It's great.
Newer albums (not just Melvins), to me, sound a little sterile/trebly/clinical if you can put it that way. Nothing wrong with it, it's all personal taste, but I just really dig the warm sounding albums like Lysol. That's probably why people still like vinyl too.

Christ, I wonder why people still like vinyl and I'm told to "STFU about it" while you bring back a tired Tool joke on a thread that has nothing to do with Tool. I swear it's ironic that the only time I ever hear about them anymore is when people on this board complain about them.
It's inevitable that people are going to want the vinyl for this record anyway and around page 30 of this thread, after the album is out, people were going to bring it up anyway. I was wondering why people gave a shit other than using it as a collectors item, because it was brought up earlier. My question was answered and I quit posting about it.

Heh cool. By the way, don't take anything I say without a grain of salt. I'm full of shit 80% of the time. Plus I'm usually drunk when I'm on here.
But to get back on track and actually talk about the

I just hope that it's not too "noise-rockish". That would really suck if it sounded like Colossus of Destiny.

Well. I think we can all agree that the new record is something to look forward to. Moving right along...
So the next one will also be with the guys from BB. That`s ok, as long as it keeps Buzz and Dale wanting to release more music. A a fanboy one can prefer this or that, but
that`s not up to the fanboy, I choose to look forward to the new release anyhow.

I liked what I saw, both in London and Oslo, but I can`t deny that I would love to hear a clean new album with only Buzz and Dale, and a bassplayer. Nevertheless it`s their choice, and it can easily just end up like whining from those of us who comment it. So from here on, after these posts, I will stop with that.

I'm just glad to hear that drums, guitars, and vocals were recorded for the record because that at least tells me that it won't be like Colossus of Destiny, which was awful. Just being honest. I'll probably get accused of not being a "true fan". Oh well.

Etcetera, until we all argue and leave to a new topic, where we strut our consumer tastes and flaunt our elite preferences.
IMO it would be pretty damn cool if it was a more aggressive Melvins el la Venomous Concept as was previously mentioned.
I'm just glad it's another Melvins album of any kind. I do think it's time for something a bit more out there with this lineup, they've certainly had plenty of time to get comfortable experimenting with the BB boys. Here's hoping for a Honky/Bootlicker type album. With the dual drums that could be awesome.
I reiterate..

The recordings that made it on to Houdini spanned about 2 years, but most of it was done in little bits over a few months.

from toshi's blogspot (http://toshikasai.blogspot.com/) ...the following are just a few parts taken from his blog. Sorry about the translation (google translator):
....Had come to play in the studio, Tool's Adam seems to notice him....
....Until now, Buzz was the main songwriting, and this time there are pieces of Jared. Coady, Dale had also written a song that is heard at this time Jared songs one song.....
.....Is based on previous attempts to change a little before our times, recording each song sounds a little different. Hostile Ambient Takeover think the color of my time and came out feeling so that the album is the sound of the bass went.....????
just a few things, the rest made no sense (as if this does). don't think it sheds much light on the new album..but its 'something'....we reach.
Stomatitis lasts aching of following. I don't seem to have improved at all. Buzz says a joke, but isn't known for a pain quite interestingly. One piece becomes available from vocal recording today. After having finished a vocal of Buzz; four gang vocals. Because I am slightly strange, this music records a vocal earlier than a drum and, with that in mind, tapes a drum. I record the music and one piece of other latter half, and drum record りが is finished safely. I receive it for a base to record it. The base changes a trial a little before last time in the last time and I change some sounds every music and tape it. I had a feeling that it was in the album that the sound of various bases in HostileAmbientTakeover entered so that oneself thought.

Always as for first day setting of the microphone of the drum saying, it is not overstatement. The drum several hours depends on setting even at one. If two it is that, it is natural for time to be required. Furthermore percussion increases.

Sound recording of one number so suddenly seriously tune. After finishing the equipment and material carrying and setting, both sound recording, Coady and Dale several [teiku] it seems that the fatigue comes out at the place where it can finish. The stomatitis deteriorate. When you talk, the inside of the mouth hurts. Especially tongue. It is difficult to concentrate. As for 2 people of the drum it keeps handling work in the opposite direction to their own condition with the good rhythm. Becoming the twin drum, the 3rd work. It has been clear at the point in time when doing the fact that 2 people are different until now most several tunes can finish the fact that it increases. It seems that had come to play in the studio, Adam of Tool becomes aware to that. It is difficult rather, various types devising also constitution, being performed being recorded and it keeps the place where, how many tune? In addition at this point in time the previous production and in the past work listening you can verify that it exceeds in the feeling which is different. Also the studio is different from the front 2 works. Until now, Buzz was main of the tune making, but this time there is also the tune of Jared. wtf is stomatitis?
Rutmanisitis is an inflammation of the mucous lining of any of the structures in the mouth, which may involve the
cheeks, gums, tongue, lips, throat, and roof or floor of the mouth. The inflammation can be caused by conditions in the
mouth itself, such as poor oral hygiene, poorly fitted dentures, or burns from hot food or drinks, eating toxic plants, or by
other factors that affect the entire body, such as medications, allergic reactions, radiation therapy, or VD infections.

puppy farm parade
Puppy farm parade is a good title though and maybe melvins are making a series of dog themed album covers. It may not be a hoax after all.
that was a rumored title of the last album.
