Fuck vinyl and fuck CD's. We have goddamn pipes linking the world pumping awesome into our faces at the click of a button. I choose awesome pipes.

Agreed, especially when you have a 2-terrabyte HDD full of FLACS piped downstairs to your amp/stereo system.... 8)

Fester. I love you too, but I'm gonna have to call bullshit on you too...

Those of you who think vinyl sounds like shit I can only asume are listening on shit stereos. I can listen to all my vinyl on cd and a/b them. They ALL sound better on vinyl. As far as buying vinyl only to collect? What a waste. As far as Buzz' opinions on vinyl, to my knowledge he only ever said he doesn't collect it himself and doesn't care what he listens to music on, he never said his music sounds better on CD, and even if he did, he'd be wrong and that's okay. I still love him 'cause he's Buzz. Anyhow though this is a huge digression from the real topic here, which Coady has updated us on this evening:

@coadydrums drums on new melvins record finished! (mostly). Jared's working on bass overdubs right now.

I'm 90% sure he did in an interview around the time that NWB came out.  It seems like he said that everyone in the industry will tell you that cds are better except for these Steve Albini types.

You mean the types of engineers that record really great sounding records?  I think Albini is a total nutter, but no one records drums as well as he does.  As far as sounds go, I'd side with Albini before I'd side with Buzz.  Analog is better, plain and simple.  Listen to Lysol and tell me that that album doesn't have a better sound than modern Melvins records.

Uncle Fester

albini knows how to get a good sound for sure.
his shellac album "at action park" sounds amazing on the record player.
I just think some albums sound alot shittier on vinyl. especially when its a really thin floppy vinyl like some led zeppelin records I have. lysol sounds great on vinyl, but I think its equal to the c.d. version.

That's most likely a case of poor mastering when it was originally mastered for vinyl in the '70s, and a superior remaster for CD done sometime in the '80s when it was first released on CD.  I would say that the newly remastered Beatles records sound superior to my old vinyl, but if they took those new remasters and mastered them for vinyl they would sound better, especially if they were 180g or heavier.  There's no doubt that there's a wide spectrum of quality in vinyl, whereas CDs are what they are, red book audio.  But my statement stands, I don't own any vinyl that sounds inferior its CD counterpart.

Albini is hit and miss.  He did a great job with High on Fire and The Jesus Lizard but man he really dropped the ball on the Melt Banana records.  Their new stuff really does sound better.  Plus, didn't Albini finally switch to digital anyway?

Lysol was a very different album than Nude with Boots.  I really can't imagine them recording both of those albums the same way.  Different sounding production on each album is also part of The Melvins charm.

(the) Razor

If you listen to NWB on an expensive system you can hear it's various flaws (technically speaking). Maybe that's what adds to it or whatever but Lysol is such a well mixed and warm sounding album. It's great.

Newer albums (not just Melvins), to me, sound a little sterile/trebly/clinical if you can put it that way.  Nothing wrong with it, it's all personal taste, but I just really dig the warm sounding albums like Lysol. That's probably why people still like vinyl too.

That's digital.  Recording and playback.

So anyways enough of this elitist vinyl vs cd bullshit. You've all lost sight of what's important and that is the fact that 2010 will see a new release by THE FUCKING MELVINS. The only thing that's important is that we all contribute financially to the Melvins be it via CD, Vinyl, or both. Now please, STFU about it or go start a thread in the music section so we can continue discussing the new melvins record.

i can't believe it's been that long!
Oh so very true. Two years between Melvins albums is... something to get used to. As long as they don't become a bunch of TOOLs and require 5 years of meditation to release a new album. I can't complain. It's not like they've been inactive either.

I can't wait to hear what Buzz meant by "weird/strange" when he described the new direction for this album. I'll go out on a limb and say I'll probably love it.

Like Stee

Is that really going out on a limb though?  It's the Melvins after all.  Can't wait to hear Evil New War God or whatever it ends up being titled...

This thread makes me laugh and puke.

Wasn't aware this entire forum was made up of music EXPERTS, fucking clowns. Same goes for the vinyl thread I recently read.

I'm spending too much time on this board - time for some fresh air.
