Aaah, I didn't know if you meant the music or the lyrics. Personally, lyrics have never been important to me, I like to think of a voice as just another noise. I know there's a Melvins lyrics section on the Board but I've never been tempted to look at it; I love Buzz's voice (sometimes it makes me howl with laughter, too!) and I'm not really curious about the lyrics of any of their songs. If the lyrics of 'Hooch' really are as they're written in the album then I guess Melvins lyrics aren't meant to be analysed or taken seriously anyway. At least not on
that album. Maybe I'm missing out, I'm sure I'll be told if I am! I agree with you completely, the "style' of their songwriting is probably unique and that's why they remain such an interesting band after all this time.

one of the things I really like... or should I say liked about the melvins was that their songs are simple yet rhytmically complex. you try and learn to play older melvins songs... even off POTRE , the rhythm is usually awkward. especially on the drums.

Yesterday, as I was in a 7 hour drive home, I was listening to a lot of metal (as I've been lately): Slayer's "South of heaven", Anthrax's "Persistence of time", Black Sabbath's "The Dio Years" and almost at the end of my drive I played the "Neither here nor there" CD and when "the fool, the meddling idiot" came on, it just struck me how the Melvins music is really different from all those bands, but it is equally (or more) heavy, aggressive and powerful. The structure of the song is like nothing those bands have ever done, but they use the same instruments (guitars, bass, drums, keyboards).
So I guess that's why I like the Melvins, because they are as heavy as other bands, but in a total different way. And also love their sene of humor in the artwork department....

I like how you can never really pin them down and they always surprise you, they have a certain unpredictability that is seriously lacking in many other bands. I like how they are obviously very clearly in it for the music, they could have made a lot of money if they had really tried. I of course also like their music, Dale's drumming is a pretty unique thing and there isn't a drummer like him, maybe even my favourite drummer in terms of actual technical talent. The Melvins also seem to be the only band who have released a five star album in 3 seperate decades(Gluey Porch Treatments, Bullhead and Houdini, (A) Senile Animal).
