Mike and the Melvins to release the long-awaited
Three Men and a Baby
on April 1st worldwide through Sub Pop
Listen: "Chicken 'n' Dump" via Noisey
http://u.subpop.com/1QyZxAg
On April 1st, 2016, Sub Pop will release Three Men and a Baby, the long-awaited collaboration between Mike Kunka (godheadSilo, Enemymine) and the Melvins. The 12-song album features the highlights "Chicken 'n' Dump" and "Limited Teeth." Most of Three Men and a Baby was recorded in 1999 at Louder Studios by Tim Green (The Fucking Champs), and it was finished in 2015 at Sound of Sirens by Toshi Kasai.
Noisey had this to say of "Chicken 'n' Dump": "Delivers on the promise of the Kunka/Melvins pairing, fixing Mike's hellacious, chugging low end to Buzz Osborne and the boys' thick racket, banging out a riff as joyous and as it is punishing(see premiere January 26th)."
Three Men and a Baby is now available for preorder through the Sub Pop Mega Mart, Google Play, iTunes, Amazon, and Bandcamp. LP preorders through megamart.subpop.com will receive the Loser edition, housed in a custom dust sleeve and on white vinyl (while supplies last). There will also be a T-shirt available with all album bundles.
About Mike and The Melvins:
Three Men and a Baby is the new album by Mike and the Melvins. It was supposed to come out sixteen years ago.
These are the facts we can be sure of: in 1998, around the time his band godheadSilo went on hiatus, bassist/vocalist Mike Kunka busied himself by tagging along on a tour with his friends the Melvins. Somewhere along the way, Mike and the Melvins – King Buzzo (guitar/bass/vocals), Dale Crover (drums/vocals), and Kevin Rutmanis (bass/vocals), at the time – decided to make a record together, and gave the project the imaginative moniker Mike and the Melvins. Sub Pop, ever on the hunt for music's Next Big Thing, enthusiastically agreed to fund and release the super-group's debut, and recording commenced sometime in 1999.
It's at this point that things get hazy. Apparently, one or more of the following happened:
Some "junior-high level bullshit."
A house was built, a barn was raised, children were born.
Typical record-label skullduggery.
A scorching case of whooping cough.
Surgery. Lots of surgery.
Shocking and poorly-timed gear theft.
Some other stuff, probably, or maybe not.
Whatever the reasons, the incomplete recording languished on a shelf from 1999 until 2015, when, much to everyone's surprise, the involved parties reconvened, finished the damn thing, and delivered it post-haste to Sub Pop International Headquarters, where it was promptly scheduled for the coveted April 1st, 2016 release date. What a story, right?
So, about the record: It's real good! Mike's signature bass crunch and vocals are all over it, and the Melvins are in fine form. It has everything from hefty noise-rock churn to a Public Image Ltd. song to cough-syrup blues to deconstructed black metal. Neither Melvins nor godheadSilo fans will be disappointed, nor will detractors of either; to paraphrase Mike, if you don't like it, it probably wasn't meant for you (read more at Sub Pop).

Love the sound of this. Just pre ordered through Sub Pop.
I can almost guarantee that the title Chicken n Dump was inspired by Tad's Chicken 'N Dumplings, a wonderful old-school restaurant in Sandy Oregon. One side of the sign's neon has been burnt out for years.

Crunchy as fuck, this one! Can't wait to hear the whole thing!
Pre-ordered. Cool shirt too.
Pre-ordered! That track definitely has some qualities of a song from the late 90's/early 00's. Happy to hear some Rutmanis-era Melvins type stuff again too! (even if its not the same)
I'm not sure if anyone else got to it first, but here's a song from the release we've all been waiting for.
The song is "Chicken n Dump" .

I saw that Sub Pop posted the video within 28 mins it had been posted in this thread. Thought I had the scoop for once
I'm gonna have to wait for a while (low funds) but I'm VERY interested since it's my Melvins favorite line-up.
Great tune.

If we're comparing the two new Melvins songs i've heard this week - and yes i shall! - i have to say i prefer 'The Decay Of Lying' over 'Chicken N Dump'. Not that the latter is a bad song i just think the former is way cooler.
The Decay Of Lying is killer. One of the harder songs on War Pussy, either track 2 or 4 is straight up new Alice In Chains for the duration of the intro, then the vocals come on and it changes tempo. That cracks me up. :D
A cover of Annalisa?!?!

Pre-ordered the "loser" white vinyl at SubPop, because it's the Melvins, and it's not a crazy price like if it was AmRep wax.
Sub Pop is scamming vinyl lovers though by charging $18 for a single vinyl LP. Gotta grab those extra few bucks . Alternative Tentacles charges $12 for new vinyl releases, and they probably need the money more.
I'll grab it on CD too wherever it's cheapest, like Amazon. Sub Pop does a shitty job on CD packaging though. Their CD releases are those usually all-cardboard gatefold crappy digipaks.
Looks like they all come with a digital download of the album too, except the cassette for some reason.

I just pre-ordered a tape and an LP because I figured the download would have wav or even flac as options, nope MP3. Sounds good though this format has come a long way.
If you bought through Bandcamp on Sub Pop's store, FLAC is an option.

I bought it from the sub pop store but I am not sure about bandcamp? Perhaps when I get to download the full album it will be an option?
Send them an email saying you bought the digital version but there doesn't seem to be a FLAC option but there is definitely one for their bandcamp store. Maybe they can clarify what's going on and could maybe even hook you up with the FLAC version.

Come to think of it wasn't a few of these songs reworked into Jelvins tracks once it was obvious the album was shelved?

I scored a promo copy myself. I'm just a few spins in because I've had to also make time for the new Black Mountain, the new Iggy, a newish Shovels & Rope album, the new Boris/Merzbow and Daredevil season 2. It takes me a while these days to decide how I feel about new Melvins releases (so much to weigh it against!) but so far I'm quite pleased. It makes me a little nostalgic for the Kevin era.

I have the d/l from pre-ordering the vinyl. Haven't listened to it. It's just better to wait and open/play the actual CD or record. I checked out only the first youtube clip once briefly. Sounds great, but I can wait to hear it all in one setting. I don't understand why record companies now throw the d/l's out there to those who pre-order. Are they that desperate for physical sales from the millennial kids who Have To Have Everything Now  :?:.

I strongly disagree and would go as far as saying every album they've released in the last decade outside of Chicken Switch is superior to it.
I dig this new album. Good songs, good riffs - better than a kick in the dick!

has the most annoying chorus' any Melvins song has ever had!
 i can see what you mean
wow, I never thought that I would say this since I was so FUCKING STOKED for this collab but DAMN.
I am disappointed. Really disappointed.
Now, a big part of my disappointment with this album may come because of my really high expectations. I thought, "Oh my god!! Yes!! This is going to be noise rock at its finest with Kunka and Buzz!" But boy, was I wrong. Dont get me wrong, I think that Buzz shows his creativity once more, but sadly in only two songs, that being Chicken n Dump and Bummer Conversation. Otherwise, this album is just boring.
For example, take Annalisa. This song has by far the most annoying chorus I´ve heard in a very long time and it just doesnt have a climax. It´s beating around the bush for roughly 3 and half minutes. In general, beating around the bush seems to be overall theme for this record.
Read the label is another good example for this. It´s, at least in my opinion, just a boring song with nothing to show.
A friend in need is a friend you dont need is (purposely??) the worst "song" on this record and it´s successors dont really improve my overall impression on this record.
The last thing I´m going to rant about is the mix. ITS SO DAMN LACKLUSTER.
How the hell can you make an album with noise rock gods all over it sound like "At Action Park" with a completely flat EQ? Just listen to the drums and how boring they sound. Then listen to the drums on The Maggot (or the other two triology albums). They have life in them. They are dynamic.
I think this going to piss off quite a lot of people...
Conclusion:
I think I´d have wanted more Kunka and less Osborne on this record. Or just better songwriting. Both Kunka and Buzz were able to write hella good songs in this time. Just listen to the Enemymine records or to the triology.
Damn, what a bummer.
Interesting post. Havent heard it myself yet, but maybe there is a reason it never saw the light of day for 17 years before whatever happened to convince them it could be finished.
I think Gravel is great song. Got that Kevvo Swagger to it. I love the way the bass (Kunka i think) in the background sounds, like a power saw buzz, almost as if its not even tuned right.
oh good, nice big crease on my outer sleeve and on the gatefold itself. that's always fun...
I dig it. There are a few filler tracks, but definitely not a disappointing release.

Yes. Paper, no plastic to stick the CD on (classic digipack).
I always like it when they provide a sleeve for the disc and the sleeve plus disc can actually slide in and out of the paper case. This is the newer design I've seen lately, where the booklet and disc can slide out either side (flap is open on both sides). It's a trifold, which scores points for making a more sturdy package. 8/10, but wish it was a jewel case.

the LP is a by noisy, and my cover came with a nice crease in it, but I'll prob keep it anyways. it's a great package and I'll never be able to replace it now.

I know it's a bit sacrilegious to request an editing of the band's original intention, butttttt if someone could edit Dead Canaries so that the second half is at a normal speed (instead of slowed down), that would be awesome. 8)
And hell, actually even speeding up the second half from the first half a bit sounds very cool, playing around with in VLC player.

Annalisa is a Public Image Ltd cover, so you can't really blame these guys for the flat song structure. Finally bought this and loving it so far!

I like this album a lot. I have been listening to a lot of Hepa-titus lately though so I hear Kevin all over the place. It does have a rough, lo-fi sound to the production but I assumed that was Mike's influence.
Here's allmusic.com's review. They gave it 3 and a half stars.
Given the Melvins' profligate recording habits and eagerness to work with others, it's rather surprising it never happened before. But in 1999, the grunge pioneers somehow managed to lose track of one of their projects. The Melvins had gone on tour with Mike Kunka, whose band Godheadsilo had recently broken up. Given their shared dedication to idiosyncratic heavy rock, it made sense that Kunka and the Melvins thought it would be fun to make an album together. But after completing most of the work, Kunka opted to take a short break before wrapping up the recording and finishing the mix. That break ended up lasting 16 years, and it wasn't until 2015 that he and the Melvins reconvened to put the final touches on their album. Considering the album's unusual history and long incubation period, it would be nice to report that the finished product, Three Men and a Baby, is some sort of masterpiece. That most certainly isn't the case, but the album is a generally successful experiment in low-end heaviness. For the Three Men and a Baby sessions, Kunka, Buzz Osborne, and Kevin Rutmanis all played bass (with Kunka's tuned high enough to send out shards of guitar-like noise). The result is a roiling sea of thick, noisy sounds, soupy and angular, propelled by Dale Crover's limber but hard-hitting drum work. The work is not unlike what one would expect from the Melvins, but Kunka does add an edge of spooky weirdness to the music that recalls Godheadsilo's brutal, low-tech vision. And while the album often sounds swampy and ominous, there's a curiously playful undertow to this music, even when it doesn't sound like a barrel of laughs. The oddball "A Friend in Need Is a Friend You Don't Need" is full of non-sequitur hilarity. Very few people could cover Public Image Ltd.'s "Annalisa" and sound like they were enjoying it. But there's too much fire in the take on Three Men and a Baby to believe Kunka and the Melvins weren't into it. There's plenty here that will intrigue the Melvins' and Kunka's separate fan bases, and perhaps this could have become an ongoing collaboration if Kunka had finished the album sooner.

This new album is neat. I can totally imagine getting this in 99 with the Trilogy and loving it to bits.
Listened to it for the first time.
Man it sounds very much like a hepa-titus album featuring Dale, Buzz and Mike than any Melvins I've ever heard before! It's a very different direction. I like it. Perhaps would've been stronger as an EP, just happy it came out though.

Ummm yeah, Dawn ... I read Buzz say they repurped a song from these sessions for the Jelvins ... tho I remember him sayin' it was Wholly Buy Bull (makes sense tis pretty bassy) ... then I hear Bummer Conversation an' it rings a bell ... but not sure which ... thought it was a HATer .. nope ... sounds considerably different than Dawn tho ... cool to hear how they twist and turn it into something else
I thought it was a HAT song at first too. It sounds a little like the verse bass line in Brain Center... But then I realized its more similar to Dawn of the Locusts.
I'm noticing a lot more of that lately with the Melvins. There will be a little part here and there that sounds like one of their older songs. It seemed to start with History of Bad Men being a revamped and expanded Night Goat for the 2000's. It's not necessarily a bad thing though. I mean if ur gonna rip somebody off it may as well be the best band ever and also helps if it's your own songs your borrowing from.

It wont change your good point at all, but History of bad men isn't ripping off night goat, it's the same riff as the man with the laughing hand is dead off crybaby.

He could always burn the cd, and then rip that up. Or maybe just download a digital version?
I'm visiting my folks for a few days in Oregon. I got into town yesterday, and my mom had been in Seattle visiting her niece. My dad and I picked her up from the airport today, and she had the loser edition in hand. She picked it up from the Sub Pop store for me for my recent birthday. Pumped to get home and finally listen to this beast.
Ian you shouldv'e burnt a CD and put the artwork in a jewel case with it, then donated it to a melvins virgin 8)
The weird, wild world of OCD.
Do you do a similar thing with DVDs? I actually have no idea if you (or anyone) still buy DVDs though.
I'm just surprised that Ian bought it after his lackluster reviews. So you didn't like Hold It In that much, but you bought it. Now this one? How horrible do these albums have to get in order to get you to stop buying them?

I've wondered that myself before too. I chalk it up to the power of this place. Hearing all the talk here probably acts on my brain like advertising! I feel like i want to own it. If i wasn't a member here i probably wouldn't have bothered. Having said that i will say my opinion of this record has risen a bit. Just today listening to the CD i thought to myself "hmm im enjoying this". But then i think we all get that response a bit more through stereo speakers than from some MP3 stream through a laptop.
The real test for me is driving around listening to it with no obligations or anything else on my mind. More songs after the first two are starting to click.

I would have guessed for profiling purposes. The same reason I keep a couple of truly awful albums.
So..................Lifestyle Hammer, how grimy is that bass? It's brutal.
This is a strange album, thought it was pretty mediocre and could've been an EP at first but I've just spun this thing the last month and can't get enough of it. Not the biggest fan of a few tracks still but the drums and bass just sound too good. Can anyone else here Cow's Sorry In Pig Minor influence on Gravel - "ladyboy lives here" sounds very much like that era.

A few factors really. It saves space but im really bad for wanting things just right or uniform. It always used to irritate me when I brought a new CD and then a few months or even weeks later you see the booklet start to fray a little or tear or the colour naturally fades over time. After a few years i found that too depressing. Just keeping the CD itself there is none of that. An old CD looks just like the day i brought it. Also, it annoys me with a collection how some albums are in jewel cases and some in cardboard or different sized packages. I like things all the same. It's like when i was a kid and used to collect console or Transformers magazines. If after a while the makers changed the font or the size of the magazine it really used to annoy me. I do like art a great deal, but often i find album art is terrible. If i like the art to an album i usually just download an image of it online. That way it never degrades!

This would be by far the best godheadSilo record.
I favor it compared to other Melvins collaborations, like with Jello and Hank III, and the artwork will help keep it in rotation. But it is hardly fitting among Melvins' best work, especially during the period that it was recorded.
Buzz has said these songs are mostly forgotten but it would be cool if they ever add Chicken N Dump to the setlist.

Is that the european edition?
It was a Japanese pre-order.
I have a question for our Antipodean brethren: was Three Men and a Baby released seperately in Australia? Was it digipak or jewel case?
That was two questions.
I ordered directly from Bandcamp and it was a digipak, so I don't know.
Sadly most of the physical stores left (where I live) don't sell music like Melvins. All the stores evolved into video game stores, DVDs (unbelievably still a thing) and white goods outfits or just selling Taylor Swift singles. It's still just as cheap to buy and ship from the US than it was from the store anyway. Maybe someone else can answer your question Jules.
Thanks, Razor. The four most recent Melvins LPs I've bought from record shops; I hope things turn back around over there, too. The indie stores I shop at have actually increased in size recently so things are looking up at the moment.

Love me some jewel cases!
I could have given you about a hundred of them over the past 5 years!
