what do you guys think of the gtp garage demos?!
i think they truly show what melvins are.
what about you?
I don't listen to them, but they aren't relaly that far behind 10 songs quality either.
you hear a *cough cough* on one of those demo songs before they start playing
"Happy Grey or Black" has the best sound quality. It was an Mp3 of the week a while back.
Those demos are really cool. They kind of show us a glimpse into the evolution of the songs. Notice the Eye Flys demo is a little different from the album version.
yeah, notice how the slow songs are fast and the fast songs are real slow.
i love it.
where can i find some info about all melv albums?
with the songs titles, etc
cause i have no idea what gtp garage demos is...
from what year is it?
the gluey porch treatments (gpt) demos are the bonus tracks on the ipecac gpt rerelease
take a look in the discography section of this side or the discography of http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Towers/5752/Melvins/

Dood (guest-pottyhead) that was funny. But it just goes to show how good the melvins really are. Buzz is all about Quality Control, and he's had the "knack" since day1.
why that name for the album?
what does it REALLY mean??
its about beating someone (or maybe other rock band). Or getting is ass kicked.
Just look at the lyrics
GLUEY PORCH TREATMENTS:
You!
You learned how to cry
And I don't think your sorry
You need a little smack of reality
And I'm gonna' be
Sick
Now you take the test
I ask you "do you like it?"
I've tasted better boards on a gluey porch
And I laugh
well, thats the clearest ive ever seen it explained...but what the hell is a gluey porch? lol
years and years ago, buzz told me that it was about child abuse whenever I asked him about it. ask him what Eye Flys is about.
hmmm, that may be it...
After listening to the song very carefully, the lyrics sound more like this to me:
You learned how to cry
And how you think you're sorry
You need a little smack of reality
And I'm gonna be...sick
Now you takes a test
I ask, "how do you like it?
You takes a pile of boards on a gluey porch
And I laugh
You like too a rapachu a you like chu a rapachu a really low. (or whatever the hell he says at the end)
...
You-
You learned how to cry
And I don't think you're sorry
You need a little smack of reality
And I'm gonna be...
Sick!
Now you takes a test
I ask how do you like it?
It takes a pile of boards on a gluey porch
And I laugh!
Thanks for the interpretation. The lyrics seem slightly different (or just pronounced differently) on the original and Electroretard versions.
this is one of the geniuos things with the melvins :D
Was Gluey Porch Treatments ever released as a CD on its own before the Ipecac re-release (with the demos at the end)?
I know it was on the same disc as the Ozma CD, but I'm just curious if GPT ever had it's own CD before Ipecac.
No, it didn't. It had it's own cassette though.
i remember seeing a photo on cdnow a long time ago of the cover of the original gluey porch treatments release, i thought it was a cd, but mabe its a cassette
it was on vinyl too, that's where i got the image for the discography.
Initial pressings of the LP had a slightly different sleeve: Matt's and Buzz' names are switched and there is no track listing on the sleeve.
Besides that I think Gluey is the only MELVINS album with "Thank you's". And there are some interesting names amongst: Kurt Ko-Bain, Mike Dillard, Steve Turner, Mommy and Daddy and a lot of other people and places.
reading this makes me feel like shit cause i had the cassette and it was stolen and twice i could have bought the vinyl with the original alchemy label imprint.

Along with the solo albums, there are tons of thank yous on Houdini and Stoner Witch, plus a few on Honky, Stag, The Crybaby, Electroretard (Kozik and A. Hilter), and one on Alive at the Fucker Club.
I was thinking about buying this. Is it the same recording as the Ozma release on boner records or is it a newer recording of the songs. I would love to hear new recordings of the songs
its the same as the old ozma, but with demo versions added. a nice package i say, and necessary for the discriminating melvins user/sucker.
The remastering helps the sound out loads. The version on Ozma, frankly, sounds like shit after you've listened to the Ipecac version...
But, no it's the same old album but you do get demos as stated to give you some different recordings of all the songs...
GET IT!!1
the Demos are GRRRREAT!
Yeah, plus you're going to want it for the detailed liner notes, and new artwork in the booklet. Get it!
Gluey Porch Treatments released on Ipecac is probably my favorite album, I can't get enough of it.

i guess he thinks you were kidding about detailed liner notes.
but i can vouch for the fact that it has 2 full panels on the inside
where buzz talks about the seattle scene, where they were coming
from and influences etc, where they were going and yadda yadda.
it's far superior to the original release.
cool, sounds like it would be a good purchase then
the funny thing for is that i forgot i even owned the re-release until i went digging in my cd rack yesterday. duh!
so youre probably looking at dale's baby face,
pouting like a 15 yr old schoolboy lol, which he was!!!
and buzz has that real afro thing going, still nappy though! :o
Whoah! When did Ipecac re-release Ozma? Is it in stores or what? I looked on the website and couldn't find mention of it. Where can I buy it?
The original recordings are super-lame and do Dale no justice. Can't wait to hear the drums turned up and filled out in the mix - if dis be true....
i dont think it has ozma, i think it's just GPT
I thought it had ozma also, ill have to look at it in the store today
Quote from: flyinghousesI thought it had ozma also, ill have to look at it in the store today
You've got it backwards: Ozma has GPT!
And also, Ozma hasen't been rereleased.
when, dammit, WHEN!
Boner still has the Ozma/GPT re-issue CD available.
It's on their iTunes web-store as well.
the pic inside is cool. Lori is holding that black n white cat up by its tail
i have the re-issue, but i want to see a re-mastered version.

It does not have Ozma. It just a re-mastered version of Gluey Porch Treatments along with some early demos. The Melvins and Ipecac should really consider releasing a re-mastered version of Ozma. along with liner notes explaining the epic "Legend Of Lorax". This would be soooo choice and funny.
there's no big story with lori really. she's in her 40s now and
she lives in San Fran still. she attends the odd show and people
dont treat her like anything but another person. Those pics i posted

In case you're still confused....'Ozma' IS NOT on the remastered version of 'Gluey Porch Treatments' released via Ipecac records. 'Ozma' has yet to be remastered but it can be found along with GPT on the Boner CD release(excellent deal, if i may say so). Overall, the GPT re-release does sound better in that it is a good deal louder and fuller in sound then the original. I noticed this right away when i first played it in my car and could achieve same damage at a lower volume......living on the 2nd floor of an apartment, its rare that i can even think about popping in GPT into my home stereo....what with all the anonymous complaints and dirty looks ive received already.
The unreleased demos are no big deal, IMO. They're alright as an added bonus, i guess....they're more historical than anything else.
it only took about ten minutes of getting high and throwing in the melvins dvd last night to earn the sounds of a broomstick thumping under the floor in my apartment... but that thing is just not satisfying on a low volume...

What an original topic name. Anyway I finally got my copy of GPT in the mail and was very excited about it. I find in my life as I feel less depressed and down on myself I'm more able to get excited about anything, such as procuring a new Melvins album. I'm really glad I got the Ipecac release and it has a really cool commentary by Buzz in it.
I haven't listened to it in its entirety yet but I have a strong feeling it will grow on me.
I was so excited about it that I held off opening it for a little while and haven't actually even opened the Pelican E.P. yet. Anyway, as far as the sound quality, it's actually impressively good. I think part of the lesson here is that as sad as it is, it pays to get shit off the web, instead of going into a store where dozens of copies of The Killers is what you'll find (unless you go to Tower or one of those shitty little places that will have like a couple Melvins cds but it's hit-and-miss). It's growing wearying the constant bands that are passed off as very artistic or rock that almost seem to be creations of the music industry. I find it frustrating because I have a friend who has relatively similar taste in me but is always telling me I'm going to like this or that band and then I discover it's another one of these bands that seem as if they are music conglomerate creations. I'm really not against major labels as far as music, but it's gotten to a point where instead of something like Nirvana, where they discover a somewhat radio friendly band and turn it into a giant entity, they have to almost create these bands and tell us how artistic and "rock" they are. And then I listen to Bright Eyes because I'm told by Pitchfork Media or a good friend how great they are, and find that they seem to be pretty much what I thought they would be. I actually got to the point where I bought the new Interpol record, which is somewhat of an example of this, although they seem to at least have some artistic core, but the point being that I just sort of want to like something that is on the radio and so I end up buying an Interpol record. Not that it's bad, I mean it's pretty good but it's kind of an expression of my wanting to like something that is the radio is saying is really great.
Bright Eyes is good... what album did you get?
I don't know maybe I judged them too quickly; I really only listened to one song that was playing on XM radio, and I've heard a few of the samples from Amazon, which I can't remember too well. Are any of the good songs played on the radio, because I can't tell too much from the Amazon clips. All I know is that they're supposed to be really great and the little I've heard left me feeling disappointed but like I said I may have judged too quickly.
i just got in the mail something i bought on ebay. an original 1986 alchemy records pressing of gluey porch treatments. my friend is looking over my shoulder making fun of me, ("oh its so fucking awesome...had to tell your friends right away, right??") but i don't care. it is beautiful. i don't even want to touch it with a needle. some of the best money i've spent recently....
Look out! There were (at least) 2 pressings of Gluey on Alchemy. First one has Buzz' and Matt's names switched and the lay out is a bit different. Front of the sleeve and labels are identical.
hm. their name's are correct on mine. so this is a second pressing?
Sweet. GPT is my favorite album.
How does it sound? I always wanted to play Eye fly with the turntable too fast.
if it hasn't been said enough already -- your ink is fucking killer vincenzo!
I'm looking into a full back piece of Bullhead
8)
thanks alot! i really appreciate it, even if i hear often (which doesn't really happen.) i should update the picture. that was taken the day after and it is kinda slimy.
i think the bullhead cover would make an awesome tattoo. i don't know if i'd have the baulls to cover my back with anything, but its a damn good candidate.
You should cover yourself with tatoo of every album :P
ya you'd have to be pretty fat for that though! (yes, over weight fat)
I have so many ideas of stuff I want ie Zappa's Mustache, the Gonzo fist & knife, the Monster Magnet bullgod, Carlin giving the finger.......but when it comes to a Melvins piece I am so undecided. The Houdini animals I think are far too cutesy, the Lysol cover would make an excellent backpiece. Stag has some excellent artwork, I was considering the Stag flower (the vinyl version, not the more skull-esque one on the CD version). Another one I was thinking was the embossed black symbol on the cover of Honky. What do you mooks think? Any idears?
I wonder if you could just commision Mackie to do a piece? Might be worth looking into.
I heard the skull from the singles is quite popular in Germany
Does anyone know for sure what year Gluey Porch Treatments originally came out on Alchemy? I've heard conflicting reports that it came out in 86 and 87. Let me know i'm still trying to get my discography sorted out.
http://www.themelvins.net/discography/albums/glueypt/index.shtml
Apparently it was recorded in September of '86 and a few months later they had the album in their hands, according to Buzz's commentary in the new release. That might be the reason for the confusion. I guess that puts the date between Dec or Jan or Feb maybe. Maybe November even.
Also some people near where they practiced had wild drunken parties and built huge bonfires that looked like something out of Lord of the Flies and they could practice as loud as they want because they were outside of town and next to a large river.
yeah his commentary doesn't say for sure the exact month and year, i'm sure he's forgotten. if anyone knows if it's late 86 or early 87 let me know.
The
The sleeve on the vinyl says "Recorded October 86" and the labels on the disc itself say
Unfortunately I don't think those labels refer specifically to the release date. I may be wrong though.
Quote from: AlvinUnfortunately I don't think those labels refer specifically to the release date. I may be wrong though.
You may be right, although I've always thought that the publishing date refers to the year that the material was actually released and available to the public.
thanks for your help guys
what's the difference between the first version, the ozma/gluey version and the ipecac version?
As for the Ipecac release, it has awesome liner notes. That's about it I assume. I own GPT double now. I already owned the Ipecac version but now that I purchased Ozma recently, I have two different versions. There's no difference AFAIK. I think it is just being added to the Ozma album to make it available again.
The Ipecac version has lots of demos instead of having Ozma on the same disc.
Overall, the mix on the Ipecac version is noticeably louder than the OZMA/Gluey version. Besides that though, the liner notes and demos are not really worth it if you're a first timer and it would make much more sense to purchase the Boner records version of OZMA/Gluey and get 2 classics in one.
Quote from: Branch BreakerThe Ipecac version has lots of demos instead of having Ozma on the same disc.
Oops, how could I forget.
thanks for the info :)
The Ipecac version is a remix.
Now what they should've done is remix gluey AND ozma and put em back out on one cd.
I think the actual first release of GPT was early '87. I was in S.F. for new years '86 and met Victor, the guy who ran Alchemy- we listened to an advance tape of GPT in the back of his Volvo with Lori & Mark who were in Clown Alley at the time. I remember seeing the original vinyl shortly after we got back to Seattle, like maybe two weeks, and hearing that the Melvins were pissed due to their names being wrong on the back cover.

I thought Mark D ran Alchemy?!?!
He did!
"For those of you not familiar with Mark D a little bit of history is more than worthy of mention. He is the founder of underground punk label Alchemy Records. Through Alchemy he pushed bands like The Melvins and Neurosis to the forefront of the scene. He maintained genius status with his production work and went on to play bass with the Melvins during their commercially successful stint during which they toured with the likes of White Zombie and Nirvana. He parted ways in 1998 and began work on his solo genius "The Silent Treatment."

Next time you see Mark, ask him about Victor.
i'm not a fan of the silent treatment.
maybe i should listen to it again...

houdini, stoner witch and mangled demos.
standouts for songs would have to be: hooch, night goat, lizzy, honey bucket, joan of arc, magic pig detective, goose freight train, snake appeal, squeetis....
i mean theres definetly more songs to love but as of right now, those hit the spot. although GPT is "where its at"
im really looking forward to getting "bullhead" "colosses of destiney" ( i know its noise) any of the trios and definetly the "lysol" (i dont care what you say its always gonna be lysol to me!)
but yes that would be on my hit list for now

actually, years ago I was told it was about child abuse....smacking kids around and stuff like that.
Okay, how bout "my small percent shows most"?
i thought about it this way too, klump. not so much walking on it, but the varnish stuff people put on wood. totally sludgy and gooey.
apparently it tastes alright too...."i've taster better boards on the gluey porch, and i LAUGH"

Greetings,
would anyone happen to have a high resolution picture of the original black & white "Gluey Porch Treatments" album? Thanks.
There are 2 different backcovers - the 1st print had their names switched.

Yes, I know. Thank you. I thought I had started a whole new thread, but it seems I've crashed landed in someone elses. Apologies. What I am looking for is a high resolution picture of the following:

why do you need it?
i have the album, i could possibly take a picture for you.
By "possibly" he actually means in 5 years you might get it or not.

A nice scan would be appreciated for the discography. Doubtful a photo could end up looking very good.
good point.
i've got no scanner...
if i can make it happen somehow i will - it's way easier than transferring the interview - but i don't really know anyone with a scanner. i'll keep the eyes peeled

I've recently heard that the Ipecac reissues of this album and Ozma both have better sounds than the original recording. I've got the 1989 compilation but was wondering if those Ipecac reissues are actually remastered..or is it just new artwork with the old recordings???
im pretty sure they're remastered... though they haven't re-released ozma yet.... the soon-to-be released makin' love demos that comes with brian walsby's new book is mostly comprised of demos that ended up on ozma.....
Lori looks like the bass player of an obscure Japanese cult band from the 70s.

Remastered shit.
Ozma has not been remastered.
from the very first note/feedback of Eye Flys, I was totally blown away by what I heard. I like some stoner rock, but I had no idea anyone could play that fucking slow. It was after this that I gave up on almost all stoner rock bands as I knew no one could compare to the godliness that is Melvins.
Ok, here we go. I finally have the chance and the funds to move my loving relationship with the melvins to new, physical and legal levels (hey! I live in Honduras and the noise-rock/sludge scene isn't exactly thriving here...not many melvins albums to buy...not any actually) and to conmemorate this I've decided to start things off with a bang. Problem is, I have a dilemma...read the post header if you can't figure it out. I figure the Ipecac edition probably has better sound, liner notes, nifty packaging, etc. but then again, the Boner twofer is the only way you can currently acquire a new physical copy of 'Ozma', BUT I don't want that edition to become obsolete when the Melvins FINALLY decide to reissue this baby, BUT at the same time this doesn't seem likely since GPT was reissued what, 10 years ago? AARGH this is killing me; help out a poor, leisurely soul. Keep in mind that albums here are might pricey (close to $20. and you can only order CDs) but I LOVE the Melvins THAT much and plan to buy all of their "regular" albums and any other stuff I can get my hands on throughout my life...
Welcome. :D
Yeah, I would have to say go with Boner. Your getting two albums for one plus the
Cars 'Candy-O' cover is on there in between the two albums. The Ozma reissue could
be years away.
Thanks man! The Boner twofer it is...though I still have a question, is the sound quality in the Ipecac reissue that drastically improved or is it a question of it just being pumped up louder? DAMMIT oh well I guess that if they ever do reissue 'Ozma' the Boner package will go out of print, thus becoming a rare, valuable collector's item...right? Right? :?

I'd say get the Boner one as well. The reissue probably won't have the lyrics to Ozma and nearly 80min of Melvins is the most bang for your buck.
I think the Ipecac version of GPT sounds noticeably better but the Ozma version doesn't sound bad at all. If the Boner Ozma does go out of print I'm doubting the old copy will ever be worth more than $10.
I am really starting to love this album.

Look out! There were (at least) 2 pressings of Gluey on Alchemy. First one has Buzz' and Matt's names switched and the lay out is a bit different. Front of the sleeve and labels are identical.
Today, about 24 years after buying the original in a record shop in Dundee, Scotland, I found the 'alternative' Gluey Porch Treatments. The print is unprofessionally dark, the sleeve material is inferior to the original, and if it wasn't for the matrices being the same (VM103-A1/B2), I'd dare to say it might even be a bootleg. Even the centre labels are a bit different. But looking above I see you've already got it covered. Thought I'd share the photos with you, though:

They also have Buzz and Matt mislabeled on the inferior one.
As I noticed time and time again in the post your melvins collection thread, there's supposed to be a red stripe on the cover of the ipecac reissue.
But on my version there isn't. It's just a stretched picture of the kids.

I always wondered why they left Mark D's name off the reissue, if it was just because they didn't like him or to spite him or something.

So I just bought a brand new copy of Gluey Porch Treatments and I have some questions about it. I don't know if it's a reissue or a well done bootleg. It looks pretty legit to me. It has 6 Songs at the end of it. Sorry for the crappy images they're from my cell phone

It looks pretty good but it's a bootleg. There are two GPT bootlegs around at the moment, maybe a German and a U.S. one. Have a look at this thread:

A bit of useless information I just learned: this was allegedly bootlegged by an Israeli guy living in Germany. That's why you sometimes see this as being located in "Israel" on eBay, but it is a German bootleg.

I think you could wait and find one with a lyric sheet and a better sleeve for the same price. Don't think this has been bootlegged yet.

Agreed. I posted under to love songs thread that heater moves and eyes might be a love song in a twisted way. On first...20 listens or so i probably wouldnt have guessed it as such.

Yeah, Heater Moves and Eyes is the song that actually led me to post this! It reminds me of someone that you care about so much that a single word can completely change the way you're feeling about something. Also, Echohead/don't piece me is another one of my favorite "love songs" off of that album, although it almost seems like not getting what you want. The line "Never is an ugly word" is one of my favorite lines of all time. :P
Oh and thanks! I've actually been here for nearly a year, but have only begun to regularly post here like two weeks ago. I like it here, and apparently I'm already in Schnab's posse, so woohoo!
did anyone get this with Ozma from back in the day? threw me for a loop for a long time, but i warmed up to it and it warmed me up to things like Captain Beefheart and Royal Trux and the like.
a few songs give off the Impression it was about Tripping balls on the front porch on acid for the first time, but thats Just me Listening to it while Really Really high.
But infact I remain convinced the whole album is about doing wayyy too much Acid.

QuoteTalk about a band setting up their store right from the out. Had they split up right after this, and it was just a weird one-off, it still wouldn't matter. I love Melvins, and like most of what they've done, but this album seems to exist in a completely different space. At the beginning, it's almost like some kind of ominous classical music. Matt Lukin does that bass intro and the drums start thundering in and the weird feedback, then finally - finally - this tune emerges out of the swamp. The balls of these guys! It's their first album, and normally you'd come crashing in with something that gets people, but they just leave it. They're masters of doing things too many times or letting things go on a bit too long. I love them.
There's a bit in the middle of 'As It Was' where it goes into a quote-unquote normal tune, and it just makes it more weird - the fact that in the middle of this gluey swamp, it goes into this regular rock song which then disappears again.
http://thequietus.com/articles/15887-kavus-torabi-knifeworld-favourite-albums?page=7
this would probably be my favorite album of all time if they hadn't ever made anything else

Didn't realize that connection existed. I thought Alchemy was all Deutrom's thing. Huh.

Does anyone here have the 1991 cassette on Boner Records with the bonus six songs at the end of side two? If so, can you tell me what the sound quality of those six songs is like? Does it sound better than the ones on 26 Songs, which seem to have been sourced from a vinyl copy? I'm wondering what the source is for the six songs on the 1991 cassette. The master tape? I'm dying to know. I think I saw someone here before who posted a photo of the cassette that they owned...

It's sounds a little different, not better. It sounds like a Cassette.
You aren't missing anything magical or anything.
Thanks for answering! How does it sound different? Do you mean it sounds like the source is a cassette? Is it quieter than the 26 songs tracks? Can you hear the sound of vinyl? (I'm thinking of buying the cassette, just for the 6 songs, and recording them, so I can play them on my iPod.) Does the quality of the tracks differ much from Gluey Porch Treatments? I guess I should just buy the cassette, and find out for myself!

It sounds like a pre loudness war cassette with a lower volume threshold compression that's way lower quality than any vinyl anyway. That being said, I don't remember hearing the sound of vinyl...I could Just make a transfer of the tape for you man.

I have a Teac V-95RX or a Technics M-45. I'll probly use the Technics since the Teac is auto-reverse and I don't think is calibrated to spec. anymore because I hear some crosstalk on the auto-reverse side, but that's how I got it.
I use Garage band to record analog to digital, but I have Audacity as well... both look kind of the same, I'm more familiar with Garage band so that might be just as good, I'll make an AIF. File transfer if that works for you?
The USB Mixer I have is an "ART" project series Interface.
The File might be a bit large, but give me a couple days I'll see what I can do for you alright?
I transferred the tape. It's a Cr02 Tape so it's got that sound to it, if you play it back in normal position is a bit hissy and there's some print-through on the tape a bit between some tracks, That's just how the tape was when I got it.
I'm 100% certain that the six songs 7" is off the Vinyl though.
PS. Steve Newman
That would be great!
