Thank You/Message Saved
Theresa Screams
Most of The Crybaby
Isabella
Porg
Skeeter
The Eagle Has Landed

Those are the things that come leaping to my mind instantly...interesting idea for a thread though. I'll give this some more thought later on...

EDIT: Possibly a controversial one, but the filler tracks off Ozma make my list too...I really don't like that album very much but don't know why...

Ah yeah of course, yu've mentioned that before. It's that little island west from Italy, and also pretty close to France. And wasn't Napoleon born over there?

I like the beautiful/ugly contrast throughout the song.

If this song dragged on for say... The better part of an hour... I'd choose it over The Crybaby anyday of the week.

While I'm here I might as well throw my two cents in...

... I thought they could have added more to Interstellar Overdrive...

I mean, I know it's not a Melvins song... But when I got Electroretard I really expected something grand... They didn't really do anything with the song...

The Crybaby plain sucks.

And, Stoner Witch and COD don't really get much play either. So... There you go.

1. Pigtro
2. Spread Eagle Beagle
3. Theresa Screams
4. Shit Storm
5. Anti-Vermin Seed
6. Porg
7. All at Once
8. Revolve (Electro-Remix)

I know Anti-Vermin Seed is probably the most controversial track, but I just don't care for it.

your right though anonymous,  give me a PURE MELVINS release anyday.

EDIT: Crybaby sucks, when compared to other Melvins releases, IMO.

Lief Garett singing Smells Like Teen Spirit? Nigga please. Is it a joke or what?

it is indeed.

Quote...And the Mike Patton track... Ugh...

Agreed. The BigBand album also kinda sucks because of Patton screwing up Melvins classics. There are songs floating on the internet that weren't released on Millenium Monsterworks and some of 'em are totally screwed up by Patton, Let God Be Your Gardener for example. Mr. Spruance kind of agreed with me when I told him that.

If I Had An Exorcism.
Buzz sounds silly on it and I know that was the intention but its still annoying.

Pure Digital Silence
Its a joke, yes, but it would fit onto a "worst of" compilation

Pigtro

Anal Satan
Another tongue in cheek song but I really don't care for it

Skeeter
Just a stump dumb throwaway track

Spread Eagle Beagle
Pointless

I guess my "worst of" would be E.P. length.

Prick.  i think Hog Log said it.  i like the album though...probably their worst release if i had a gun pointed to my head and had to choose.

all these Crybaby haters, i can't believe that.  it's not a true Melvins release, but it's a valid album by all means.  it's a fun record.

i think the leif garret song is hilarious. and GI joe.. its not the best patton song, but it is patton.
and i thought the big band cd was great, its nice to hear other variations of the songs, although they're great in their original shapes as well. i know we got a lot of patton haters here, but im not one of them

Pigtro

Spread Eagle (no Beagle from 1-12)

1-12 Queen version.

I know you can explain these away as B-sides of the 1-12 Singles, but they suck.

Fuck I love Queen on Stoner but this 1-12 version is just plain anoying, you want to rock out and your ass is stiffled.

Reverand Eb have hatted Crybaby forever. But here's how I look at it: I got into Hank III, Skeleton Key and Blood Bliss because of this release. And I like it.

Who said they hate Stoner Witch? That is fucken blaspheme.

"How About"  off Prick does anyone ever listen to this?

Theresa Screams, Skitter and Digital Silence plus the 26 Songs lawn mower recording I don't consider songs.

Thank You Saved Message just an E-bay profit maker, who can hate that?

So I guess these are my only dreaded Melvins tunes:

Pigtro

Spread Eagle (no Beagle from 1-12)

1-12 Queen version.

How About (Prick)

Another one for consideration...

Kool Legged.

Now, I know I've already bashed Ozma once this thread but even so I really hate this song...I've never heard a version of it that sounds good. I thought that having Joe Preston chime in on it on 'Salad...' might've made it better but, no, it still does nothing for me.

And yeah, I know I come off as very negative about The Crybaby but let me make myself clear. Some of it, I quite like. The Hank Williams III tracks, f'rinstance and the version of Teen Spirit makes me smile but so much of it just leaves me cold...Generally speaking I don't think I'm one for the Melvins collaborating on anything much. I like 'Pigs...' but even the Melvana thing doesn't really flip my switch.

There are no bad Melvins songs period. I'm not counting "field recordings" like Theresa Screams, Messaged Saved, some of the stuff on Prick, etc. They aren't "songs", but they're there for a reason.

Come come, surely you must agree that some of the songs on something like Mangled Demos are at least throwaway if not indisputably bad...

That's another one by the by which needs mining...not keen on a huge amount on the Mangled CD...

Black Bock is fucking awesome. The music is happy and cheery, but the lyrics are typical dark, brilliant Melvins.

I can easily listen to Mangled Demos all the way through. Sure it's not groundbreaking or as good as Black Flag, Bad Brains or Misfits, but for some 18 yr old backwoods refects who weren't a part of any scene, it's damn good.

Shit Storm (this track clearly took practically no effort.  99% of owners of Electroretard just press the "skip track" button on their cd players)

I used to skip over Shit Storm alot because YoA is so awesome. Then one day I let it play all the way through, and found out how great Shit Storm segues into YoA. The last 30-60 seconds of it just boils over to the opening notes. I can't explain it, but it works perfectly. Trust me, crank it up and try it. The Melvins knew what they were doing putting this awesome backwards track at the beginning of this CD.

Play Shitstorm backwards and see what you think!

bad brains=my favorite punk band (if you discount mangled demos and others)
maybe one of the only ones i can fully enjoy.
i think it's great that everything the melvins put out is unique and unexpected.
i love everything up to the toedy toedy toe, oo la la la la.
there is an undertone throughout that album of darkness, but looking at it with an impressionistic view, less is more.  no doubt skin horse is kind of eerie along with goggles and those "non-rock" songs like hide.
I didn't like cottonmouth when i first heard it, but i've gotten more into ween so i now can listen to it and enjoy.

I didn't like cottonmouth when i first heard it, but i've gotten more into ween so i now can listen to it and enjoy.
and was that comment towards me, because if it is, i'm not quite sure i get it.
heh, i'm a city boy!
bown an' raized
No dude, not towards you. I meant that the Melvins (in '83) were a bunch of 18-19 yr old rejects from the backwoods of Washington who were awesome but not a part of the great punk scene of the time. That would have been awesome to see them open for the Minutemen when they rolled through in '84.

I love Cottonmouth. Melvins could be the greatest white blues band if they wanted to. "Mississippi Dale Crover"!

Hag Me.  it's the ONLY Melvins song i hate.  i take back whatever i have said about Boris.  this is one reason i'm excited to hear the new Houdini...

i'll end on this note...
Black Bock is why i love the Melvins.  they'll just throw some random shit at you.  shit the average person (excluding us Melvins fans of course) wouldn't expect them to pull off.  this is the only song my girlfriend likes by the Melvins.  and she LOVES it.  hehehe, she hates to admit it to.  hehehehehe.

i like love thing, it's short and sweet.
candy o is probably the weakest track on the album, though.
but i still dig the song.

vile is a special song to me, i was doing a watercolor painting and listening to vile with my headphones.
i knocked over some watercolor and it splashed on the canvas exactly when buzz let out a long chord.
the soaking and speading of it matched the song. pretty cool.

I can't stand it either! It just sounds like a very bland, generic rock song (IMO) with a lack of classic Melvins quirkiness and sludginess. I did actually enjoy the 26 Songs version though. Much slower and heavier.

Continuing the thread, I also hated A History Of Drunks. Way too poppy for me. I skip it every time.

Man, I used to hate Hag Me until about a year and a half ago. Then I started listening to original Houdini again after not having a listen for ages and fell in love with it. 2 years ago it would have made this list but now I consider it in my top 20 melvins songs list (well at least top 30). Especialy the second part. Dale's drumming in the 2nd part is so simple yet so genius. I used to listen to it while driving to work every morning twice in a row for about a month straight a few months ago.

Set me straight has to be the most generic(?) melvins song...  by that I mean that it is a song that could have been written by any other band in that time and area. I actually like the earlier version more than the houdini ones.

I used to skip over Shit Storm alot because YoA is so awesome. Then one day I let it play all the way through, and found out how great Shit Storm segues into YoA. The last 30-60 seconds of it just boils over to the opening notes. I can't explain it, but it works perfectly.

I completely understand what ur saying, same here...

And I like both versions of it ("Normal" and reversed)

Mangled Demos, 10/26 Songs, & Crybaby ... are by no means gold imo ... but they have their gems ... I'd say I dig 10/26 Songs the least though ... I wouldn't call 'em "worst" 'cause I still dig 'em but definately on the bottom of Melvins cannon ...

As for iduvidual songs ... just off the top of my head:

1. Set Me Straight - I agree w/ some of the other opinions that it's just a generic pop/rock
tune ... never really held my fancy ... either old, mid, or new versions
thou I dig the one on Houdini live best ...

2. The Stupid Creep - I've warmed up to "Nude with Boots" the song ... a better attempt at
the pop/rock formula than say "Set Me Straight" ... or this one
I donno just can't wrap my head 'round this one

3. Revolve (original version) - Totally agree w/ Fester? Metallica all the way ... best song
Metallica never wrote. Not really big on the song per say
but it makes me laugh everytime I hear it ... like it was done
on purpose as a "Metallica sucks" joke ... I've always wanted
to ask Buzz if that was the case ... keep forgetting thou. The
'Electro' version kicks ass thou ...

4. G.I. Joe - God Patton's white boy hip hop blows even harder than real hip hop ... and that
blows pretty hard ... pretty much if Patton's on the mic w/ Melvins its the
"worst" ... there are a few moments of nice atmospherics here and there on
Big Band stuff ... and I dig the duet nature of their "Let it all Be" & "Sacrifice"
but Patton's gotta learn to shut up a bit ... espescially in Melvins tunes.

5. I Can't Shake It - See explination for "Set Me Staight" & "The Stupid Creep"

6. Singles 1-12 - Definatly some real cool shit here ... but mostly just shit ... pointless,
self indulgent and boring ... bet they were so high

7. Mark - the Mark years ... always been my low point for Melvins ... those albums have
some real gold on 'em & I've warmed up on 'em alot since they were released ...
I've explained it all in here before so I won't really dig into ... I just don't like
Mark's touch on things ... he just seemed too "muso" ... his bass is too "on" & notey
for me ... like a frustrated guitarist & his influence & presence just adds/ed a
slickness or something I don't/didn't like ... thou like I said I've warmed up to 'em
heaps over the years ... thou I doubt Mark was all to blame ... it was the 90's ...
                   yuck!

Thinking of those Mark era albums & their songs made me think of "Skin Horse" ... and by
proxy; underrated Melvins tunes ... the 1st half is completely underrated ... even the band
gives it short shift live ... too bad, that first half is completely monumental & just compiments the 2nd half so well ... with its full on drum vibe I think this new line up would totally cook that one!

Post by: Leroy on May 10, 2008, 09:04:36 PM
Yeah sometimes I don't care for Mark D's "showing off" on bass.  He's really skilled though.   I'd say that the song he sings lead vocals on is probably one of my least favorite Melvins songs.

I got my worst in mind. It'd be in this order too. I know Buzz would write some hilarious liner notes that'd be totally bat-shit insane if this happened.

1. Spread Eagle Beagle (Original)
2. Your Blessened (Live 8" version, dunno why but I couldn't stand this song when I heard it at first. LOVE the Bullhead version with the noise & drum intro.)
3. At least one song off Prick that isn't Rickets, Larry, or Roll Another One
4. Lividity
5.  Yacob's Lab
6. That one stupidass song off Honky with all the marketing statements (Ex. We can't sell albums with special packaging unless it goes GOLD)
7. SHIT STORM
8. White Men Are The Vermin Of The Earth
9.  Ever Since My Accident/Hugh
10. Skeeter
11. Bricklebrit
12. The Eagle Has Landed
13. At least one of the sped up songs off Leech
14. Tanked (Wispy is fine, though)
15. Spread Eagle Beagle (Live 2005 version)

Suddenly, I don't feel so bad not listening to Ozma, The Trilogy, or Singles 1-12

1. Kool Legged
2. Ever Since My Accident (Ozma)
3.  Spread Eagle Beagle
4. Queen
5. Tipping The Lion
6. some song off Bootlicker (all songs kinda sound the same except Let It All Be and Prig)
7. some song off Crybaby
8. A History Of Drunks

Well yeah, it's not that I hate these songs, but I just don't like them as much as the others.
