The Melvins
(A) Senile Animal
[Ipecac; 2006]
Rating: 7.3

For the last decade, the Melvins have absolutely shat on their seminal status. Their antics have ranged from gimmicky (releasing a single for every month in 1996) to kitschy (kicking off 1999's Crybaby with Leif Garrett belting out a cover of "Smells Like Teen Spirit") to just plain wimpy (2005's limp-wristed live recording of Houdini in its entirety). Due to these bloopers, there was much head-shaking and sighing to be had when the band, now reduced to a putative duo consisting of King Buzzo and drummer Dale Crover, announced their merger with L.A. drums/bass metal band Big Business earlier this year. That's right, as if the band's recent tomfoolery hadn't marred their first proper release in four years, they now sport two drummers, the pinnacle of rock absurdity.

What a pleasant surprise then that (A) Senile Animal stands as the band's most no-frills, accessible, and flat-out best album since Stoner Witch. Hostile Ambient Takeover from 2002 didn't testify to it, but you can find the Melvins's legendary sound speckled all over today's metal bands. Animal reclaims the stoner rock the Melvins ruled before Kyuss and Queens of the Stone age co-opted it, and Boris owes much of their recent hipster metal success (not to mention moniker) to the band's early sound, reincarnated here on tracks like "Rat-Faced" and "You've Never Been Right".

That said, Animal is less a blast from the past than a retooling of the Melvins' strongest albums following a more conservative mindset. The opening of "Civilized Worm" doffs its cap to catchy 70s arena rock, pounding out the chords to Cheap Trick's "Need Your Love" over a bare bones blues beat straight off of Machine Head. "A History of Drunks" follows suit, propping up King Buzzo's singsong melody with multi-tracked vocals and a middle section replete with handclaps and a surprisingly tender new wave guitar line.

These nuanced exceptions aside, the Melvins churn out their signature straightforward metal sludge by the barrelful on Animal, and no one's complaining about that. Three six-plus minute tracks grind the album to a close, each harkening back to classic slow burners like "Night Goat" and "Hag Me". Even the twin assault on drums comes together nicely as Crover and Big Business mercenary Coady Willis place their intersecting fills at loggerheads for our amusement on "A History of Bad Men". For all their recent boners and elbow-rubbing with Ipecac's weirdest, this newfangled Melvins outfit has sobered up to concoct a return-to-roots album, one that simultaneously cements their monolithic mark on metal while promising there's more gas left in the tank to keep on thrashin'.

Pitchfork media is filled with a bunch of elitist wankers and this review is amusing at best.

Houdini live... wimpy? bloopers? head-shaking and sighing? proper release? Two drummers the pinnacle of rock absurdity? HAT not as good as stonerwitch?

The real pinnacle of rock absudity is a handful of elitest wackjobs who've gone astray from their mental masturbation to write rock album reviews.

If the band is heard by more than three people (including writers for Pitchfork), the band obviously sucks.

They gave the Flaming Lips - Zaireaka (an album that requires for CD plays to fully listen to) a ZERO. Why? Because the reviewer couldn't find four CDs players. He couldn't even find two. How the hell can you not find two CD players? The fucker even admitted that he didn't even listen to the entire album one by one.

So that site can get fucked. Hard.

That first sentence should have summed up how his review was going to go.  So he's saying that Honky and the Trilogy are shit?    And yes, Houdini 2005 fuckin grooves and is heavy.  I couldn't imagine calling it 'limp wristed'.

Zaireeka is beautiful.  Anyone that is too lazy to get a few cd players and friends together is no music fan.

Hey i agree with that review. How DARE the Melvins decide to experiemnt and push their sound forward, when i want a CD of 12 nice Revolve-style tracks? Every release im sorely dissapointed that they have AGAIN decided to try and provide me with something fresh and exciting and interesting, when all i really want is to feel safe and comfortable listening to similair songs throughout a bands whole career. They should go back to where my head is stuck, back to the "good old days". And they should get Lorax back. She's Shirley Temples daughter don't you know. If the Melvins were more like Shirley Temple, then Kurt Cobain would still be alive. Its a well known fact that he shot himself after hearing that the first track from Honky didn't sound like Revolve.

The Melvins - A Senile Animal
Sludge metal collaboration with Big Business
by Ed Thompson

December 13, 2006 - So let me get this straight - the Melvins, kings of sludge metal and ambassadors of all things musically deep, dark and heavy, have hired musicians Big Business to help record their latest record. Isn't that like being a multi-millionaire and winning the Super Lotto jackpot?

Melvins mainstays Dale Crover and Buzz Osborne hooked up with sludge sound monsters Coady Willis and Jared Warren (the two full-time members of Big Business) to create Senile Animal, the first Melvins album in four years. As the Melvins are no strangers to the revolving door of bass players, adding Warren on the bass makes the record so much heavier than anything the band has done in about a decade. The oddity of the pairing comes from the fact that Crover from the Melvins and Willis from Big Business are both drummers. Having two guitar players is one thing. Having two drummers is quite another.

But then again, the Melvins have never really been a band that is concerned about playing by the rules. And judging by the results here, the Melvins may have just spawned a trend, albeit one that will not have the same results when imitated by lesser musicians. On the end of the track "Civilized Worm", the dual percussionists release an onslaught of skin-bashing excess that would make even the late, great John Bonham sit up and take notice. The best effects of the two-drum ensemble can be heard on the track "You've Never Been Right", a blistering track that sounds like what would happen if Black Sabbath wrote speed metal songs. On the flip side, "The Mechanical Bride" is a track of slow, deliberate sludgy, distorted metal sounds. Its deliberate pace and slow, deep groove is classic Melvins.

After almost two decades of recording music, the Melvins have actually found a way to break new ground musically. Senile Animal is a solid recording and is definitely a record that all fans of the Melvins should own. For those who enjoy sonic experimentation, this is one that should be on the list of possible pick-ups. For those of you out there who like your music popular and easily recognizable by anyone who listens to popular or alternative radio stations, this one is probably best left on someone else's MP3 library.

Definitely Download:
1. "A History of Drunks"
2. "You've Never Been Right"
3. "The Talking Horse"

It still amazes me how so many reviews refer to ASA as "experimental"... it the most straighforward "normal" recording the Melvins have made.

I'm still having the same vibe actually, ever since I got back. I have these moments every now and then, but not this long. I'm listening to VU's Venus in Furs and am loving it. A little hash, some wine, and bringing back the memories from last weekend. And just four months to go for the Roadburn festival.

I've also been listening through the entire Melvins catalogue and at no point got tired from it, or felt the need to put on something else. Well, now then. Usually I feel like I should, or maybe not should, but still I would listen to more different sorts of music, which is healthy of course. I mixed it with some Melvins, but much more than that. But I don't feel that urge right now at all. Maybe it means something. Maybe it means try not searching for something you've already found. I don't know. Maybe that's proof of what state I'm in lately.

Over.

I just came back from a stroll in the woods. I sit down and put houdini 2005 on. It's my favorite kind of high. The one that keeps on building. Houdini is not wimpy.

Side note. In my senior year of high school I was forced to take the yellow bus with little shits from junior high. For my first three years I had a free city bus pass every month. It was hell on that bus but I remember listening to houdini for the first time on it. I put that shit loud to drone out the junior tards. Worked like a charm.

Actually I wasn't being sarcastic.

Well....maybe a little. I would never buy a Timberlake CD, but I would take a listen if it were handed to me.

As for Pitchfork, I have discovered a shitload of great bands on that website. Many of which I listen to all the time and some that have enhanced my life greatly. On the other hand, I also disagree with their reviews from time to time. For instance, they have never been fond of the Melvins, except when they're talking about how influential they are. They also rip Tool and The Mars Volta so there you go...

And as you mentioned 'tommyhc', it is all about taste and that's all a review is right? Someone's opinion.

Most journalists do that.

Nicely said.
It is possible that I am over confident in my belief that he will never release anything worthwhile. But I truly doubt it. But then again it comes back to a matter of taste.  What I find to be thrash doesn't make it so.

Sorry if I offended some  JT fans.  (I must say I have been playing it safe since my initial outburst at a a poor soul when I first joined the board... let's spice things up a bit).   Fuck Justin Timberlake.... there we go.

JT, as I like to call him since were close personal friends, had ONE good moment in his entire musical career.  it was a performance on SNL a few years ago where he had a live band and a bad ass trumpet player behind him jamming, instead of the usual shitty hip hop beats by timbalake or the neptunes or whoever.

oh, and his 'dick in the box' on the new snl episode.  other than that you can forget about him.

those tough guys at pitchfork also listed justin timberlake's new pile as one of the best albums of the year.  so, in a way, its kind of an insult that they didin't give ASA a lower review

i brought up JT in this thread as well.  i didn't know there was another thread devoted to him

how can there be TWO threads mentioning Justin Timberlake on a melvins message board at the same time?
if anyone sees this, we could lose all of our underground credibility.

JT is totally gestalt, face it he's no Lemmy, John Lydon or Zappa...

He would look hot with Lemmys warts, Lydons hair and Zappas butt cancer.

Pitchfork: notoriously horrid in both reviews and end of the year ratings.
I would like to see a Melvins review of pitchforkmedia.com Specifically Dale.

JT: Dick in a box is pretty funny. Really. I haven't laughed like hiccups since the Washington video [ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pc9y5ayeeb4 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pc9y5ayeeb4) ] see it if you haven't.

Pitchfork: no merit

George Washington: A fucking Legend.

JT: A Pitchfork carrying George Washington wannabe

i've been saying it for like two years now , but i'll say it again
fuck pitchfork

i was lucky enough to have a free ticket to a day at their festival this summer
and man did the sound suck ass (even cut out completely for a few bands)
the bands weren't much either
but i dig Aesop Rock and Mr. Lif (yeah i like hip hop and the Melvins)
so not a total loss

Even pitchforks hip hop reviews are pure shit
they are clueless
i check it for what has just been released, and smirk at their take

the entire Melvins review was horrible

JT ,the ngie can dance, but that shit makes me flip or leave

Pitchfork so happens to be run by a bunch  of virgin- bed -wetting-dweebs who have taken one too many english classes, who also think that Radiohead is the next Pink Floyd of our generation or something (they're not).  So their opinions shouldn't really matter to any of us. Pitchfork also backs a bunch of indie-emo-artsy-college- bands who are also virgin-bed-wetting-dweebs that nobody has heard or even cares about.
