Ozma: FIVE STARS {This is the best of Melvins's slow-motion-math-rock-with-the-occasional-dirge years and it has really interesting production that makes everything kind of machine like, which I find nice.}
King Buzzo FOUR STARS {Really hypnotic in places with the drumming and weird pinball samples and Annum is beautifully bitter-sweet. The music behind Dave Grohl's story really complements it well}
Houdini: FOUR STARS{I'm taking a point off for Set Me Straight and Copache, the latter being the duller of the two. Spread Eagle Beagle is dullness done right, being really fun to listen to in the dark. It's pretty genius to make an ambient song entirely out of beats}
Stoner Witch FOUR STARS {Metal songs and ambient songs and a neat noise thing at the start of Magic Pig Detective. The riffs don't compel me as much as some of their other ones, but their still good.}
Stag FIVE STARS {Such a great mix of different things done really well and sequenced brilliantly. Even the two short ambient tracks near the start work perfectly in the context of the album and everything else is fabulous. Even Soup. ESPECIALLY Soup.}
Honky FIVE STARS {Everything I like about Stag but for less money.}
The Maggot FIVE STARS {Their most conventional metal album still has a pleasing mix of different things with FAST METAL (amazon and the other fast songs) and SLOW METAL (manky and the fool, the meddling idiot) and EPIC METAL (the Jethro Tull cover). }
The Bootlicker FOUR STARS {Everything about this is fine except that the riffs get a little samey. The two big multi-part songs are, like, totally radical.}
Hostile Ambient Takeover FIVE STARS {Noise rock as heavy metal is really, really good}
Pigs of the Roman Empire FIVE STARS {I'm giving this a five based purely on bootlegs of the title track. It's that good. }
Noudini: A Live History of Gluttony and Lust: Houdini Live 2005 FOUR STARS {Buzzo loses a point for fucking up Honey Bucket but everything else is as good if not better than the other version.}
A Senile Animal FIVE STARS {The production is slightly dry, but Merzbow has immunized me against irritating sounds. The vocal harmonies and dual drums make things pretty bombastic in the best way possible.}

1) Houdini and/or History of Gluttony and Lust (Love the mix of songs, not one is the same as the other, love the live album more, I always judge a band by their live performances)
2) (A) Senile Animal (Love it! Have to listen to it everyday, can't get enough of the duel drumming)
3) Eggnog (an Oldie but Goodie, love the heaviness, but I wish the album was longer)
4) Ozma/GPT (Great intro to the Melvins, gives a good idea of how simply incredible they are!)
5) Lysol (Love the cover art, and BODF nearly brings me to tears)

The blanks are not determined yet. For example, I listened to the solo series when it came out via a mix tape with bullhead on the flipside, sent from someone in Iowa, but the only thing I remember is the Dave Grohl Lint story. So they get a pass; but that's really no review. Sieg Howdy is strange in that I listen to it a lot more than I thought I would. It makes me remember when the dead kennedys reformed; I saw one of the first shows with the kid actor singing; I didn't even realize the guitarist when he passed me in the bathroom..he was probably one of the older people there that night.
I'd have to say though that I wholly prefer their live shows to the actual albums..except maybe bullhead..or senile animal.

The classic combination of abstract noise rock and metal. What always strikes me about it is how at the same time, it's so solidified and solid, and shows so much potential and expansion "Easy as it Was," "Disinvite" "Grinding Process*. Everything that makes the Melvins is there, in it's rawest and most abstract form.
Gluey Porch Treatments: ****
Still the iron skeleton of the monstrosity that the Melvins were to become, but here in it's full, abstract glory. The crown of it, is "Eye Flys," where the iron skelton threatens to collapse in order to devour the listener.
Ozma: ***1/2
I don't know what it is, but although great, it just seems a bit. . .dulled, compared to GPT. Normally a big fan of sludge, no matter how much it seems to gum the gears, but I think some of the previous energy is missing. Still some great songs, "Dead Dressed" my unlikely fave.
Your Choice Live Series: ***
A lot of people turn their nose up at this one, but I've always thought it was at least a workable live album.
Bullhead:****1/2
The very first time I rented a U-Haul, I nicknamed it "Boris." Their darkest and creepiest one yet, combining the power of GPT with the sludgy, looming weight of Ozma. Lots of nods towards possession and multiple personalities as Buzz starts to get more obscure with the imagery. The "smartest" of the early albums too. Besides the aforementioned "Boris," "Anaconda" is the greatest metal hit ever in another dimension, and "If I Had An Exorcism" is dark experimental brilliance.
Eggnog:*****
The Melvins come in, strike fast, strike hard, and take no prisoners. With absolutely no low points on the album, "Wispy" "Antitoxidote" and "Hogleg" respectively shatter, tear, and shred all signs of civilization and reality foolish enough to stand against them. Then the Melvins call in "Charmicarmicat" as an earthmover to bury the wreckage in alluvial soil. Pure serrated brainmelt.
King Buzzo:****1/2
All hail the king, his is the smartest, artiest, of the three, all built around the colossal, heart-breaking "Annum."
Dale Crover:****1/2
Quite a surprise. Crover provides fuzzy grunge-blues played in a smoky post-apocalyptic bar. . . assuming the apocalypse happened about 1975. Better than that makes it sound. "Hex Me" and "Dead Wipe" alternate as my fave on this one on a daily basis.
Joe Preston:*
There is good noise and there is bad noise. This is bad noise.
Lysol:*****
There is no better symbol of being a Melvins fan than Lysol on cassette. The slow-mo crush of the song "Hung Bunny" provides not only my favorite Melvins song title ever, but also the aural expression on the dues that newcomers must pay for the enlightment of Melvinsism. "Roman Dog Bird" rises from the opening goop to utterly pound the lucky listener into submission, as Buzz blends the dirt level day to day of GPT with the darkness of "Bullhead" lyrically. Followed by an apocalyptic take on "Sacrifice" and an extremely creepy take on "The Ballad of Dwight Fry," it all leads into the raw emotion and scowl-tuned riff of "With Teeth," likely my all time fave Melvins song.
Houdini:****1/2
The Melvins start moving towards more openly weird, and at the same time, manage to put out a great album of relatively straight-forward metal. Highpoints: "Night Goat" looks back towards Bullhead and forward towards Stoner Witch at the same time; a dark song with 10 tons of metal groove. Speaking of which, my fave on the album is the bass-led "Teet," an experimental expansion of some of the shorter ones on "Bullhead." "Lizzy" looks all the way to the Swans-Meet-Depeche-Mode-and-Get-Wasted gothgrunge of The Bootlicker. Automotive comparisons seem to fit, "Hag Me" is a stolen tractor trailer relentlessly crashing through police road blocks for no logical reason. "Hooch" and "Honey Bucket" barrel towards the listener like spike-covered camaros. Get out of the way, or get run over. Better yet, hop in.
Prick:**1/2
Sonic experiments that still keep the interest, and avoid taking themselves too seriously. Art, straight no chaser. Yet still a listen that goes on over and over again, rather than once, so you can say you've done it. Besides, "Rickets" is basically stripper music for people with no attention span.
Stoner Witch: *****
The Melvins album that spends the most time at the top of my ever changing list of favorite Melvins albums, Stoner Witch is probably the Melvins at their most refined, smart, metallic, all dark and shiny. The oft-maligned "Revolve" is probably my favorite. Just a tower of power. "At the Stake" is a close second. Make-out music for a cenobite's first date. "Queen" also shines with it's burnt rumble, "Roadbull" with it's marshal charge, and "Junebug" with it's hoedown in hell rumbing bassline. Meanwhile "Magic Pig Detective" turn from a screeching noise experiment into two minutes of cybernetic biker punk, and "Shevil" stands aloof as the greatest space rock song ever writen. I think it's a concept album.
Stag: *****
The Melvins grab psychedelic rock by the lapels, and then shake it before stealing it's lunch money. Among the priceless gems that fall out, the unstoppable assault of "The Bit," the utter insanity of "Black Bock" and industrial noise sculpture of "Goggles." "Skin Horse," and "Tipping the Lion" play the royalty constantly struggling against the revolutionaries of "Buck Owens" and "Captain Pungent." And as far as "Bar-X the Rockin' M". . .well, that's just the insane voodoo ringmaster who spins this particular circus between surealism and dada.
Honky: ***1/2
The bad trip equivalent of Stag's mind expansion, Honky seems to echo from very deep underground. Again, maybe a bit of a let-down, energy-wise from the previous ones. Still, it can be sight to be behold as the mechanical "Lovely Butterflies" leads it's army of nightmare paintings like "Harry Lander's Walking Stick Tree" and "Airbreather Deep in the Arms of Morpheus." Music for a party barge on the River Styx.
Singles 1-12:****
True, there is some junk mixed in there, but much of the rest is essential. "GGIIBBYY" has got to be one of the best songs ever chopped off another album.

The Melvins absolutely refuse to take prisoners in their most aggressive punch since Eggnog. Pure headbang for the highly intelligent from the word go . "AMAZON" sums up the musical lessons Atlantic years perfectly. Meanwhile, "Manky" is simply mad as hell and not going to take it anymore.
The Bootlicker:*****
The Melvins' sex album. Pure and simple. Absolute perfection in that regard. Also, the slipperiest, darkest, and, dare I say it, most Goth thing they've ever done. Think about it: "Lone Rose Holding Now" and "Mary Lady Bobby Kins" are defintely the stoner sisters of "Flies on the Windscreen." Meanwhile, "Up the Dumper" is the world's most sarcastic song, and "Black Santa" shows us what Norwegian black metal should have been instead of what we ended up with. And that's not even mentioning the undead blues of the album's centerpiece, "Let It All Be."
The Crybaby:****
Nearly unrateable and indescribable. Lief Garrett on lead vocals of an even heavier cover of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" should not in any logical realm go well along side the wrenching unoffical spiritual sequel to "Annum," the Foetus-voiced "Mine is No Disgrace." But it just does, and that's Bob-level High Weirdness. Seriously, like their entire career, The Crybaby constantly teeters between genius and subgenius. All sorts of different angles come in to both boggle the mind, and utterly pulverise the brain. "Blockbuster" (!) "Dry Drunk" (!!) "Moonpie" (!!!)
Colossus of Destiny:***
A great idea, that just doesn't work quite perfectly. Wears thin, like "Hung Bunny" without the climax of "Roman Dog Bird." Still, better than "Jerusalem" by Sleep. A supernova, beautiful, but painful to experience.
Electroretard:***
A nice little between meals snack. High in flavor, light in substance.
Millennium Monsterwork: *1/2
Some things just don' t work in the transition to a recorded state. This is one of them. Style seems off. Probably would have been amazing up close and personal. Pieces seem missing on disc.
Hostile Ambient Takeover:*****
Rested and refreshed, the Melvins semi-reinvent themselves again. This time as metallic noise rockers, with an industrial punch and a psychedelic sneer. The illegitimate child of The Maggot and Stag, conceived to the soundtrack of an infinite number of TVs and Atari 2600's being run through a tree shredder. The disturbing dreamscapes of "The Anti-Vermin Seed" rubs shoulders with the arrogant geek-metal strut of "Little Judas Chongo." Mix in the more cryptic influences of Bullhead and you have "Foaming." Try the occultic glint of Honkey instead, and your reward is "The Fool, The Meddling Idiot."
Pigs of the Roman Empire:****
The musical distillation of rusted evil. If you get tired during bits, don't worry, "Pink Bat" and "The Bloated Pope" will be along to kick your ass in a minute.

I've never been a big fan of the Dead Kennedys, apart from "Nazi Punks Fuck Off", which must be liked, or the laws of physics no longer make sense. The Jelvins records sound like a really great punk metal band, in need of a better lead singer. Would like to hear the current line up with Buzz and Jared sharing vocals on these.

A good live version of a good album. Guess I'm just not a fan of live albums, but it seems unremarkable.

The Melvins version ?.0. The now extremely unconventional line-up effortlessly creates an army of mechanical art metal demons to conquer the world. Absolutely no weak spots or soft points, though "A Civilized Worm," "A History of Bad Men" and "The Hawk" constantly compete for for second place behind the lofty monarch of the album "A Vast Filthy Prison," while "A History of Drunks" serves as the assassin disguised and court jester.

I think it's kinda cool to see the different tastes.. Just to comment on your list turnacus, as an example; I for one would rate the Dale Crover Ep higher, in my opinion it's a solid EP with four really good songs on it. Same goes for 10 songs, it was one of my first Melvins albums and totally blew me away, still does. I agree with POTRE, it's great. I think it flows unbelievably well.. there's this scary atmosphere throughout the whole album, plus some great Melvins tunes here and there.
I could go on and on.. maybe I should try to do a list as well, just for the hell of it. I've never really thought about that before though. It would be pretty difficult

Gluey Porch Treatments: 9/10 this one is downright monolithic.
Ozma: 5/10 Not one of my favorites. Has some really good songs, but some really horrible production.
Your Choice Live Series: 6 /10 i prefer this one to Ozma or Bullhead, simply because the songs sound better live.
Bullhead: 5/10. I have mixed feelings about Bullhead. Its got some of their best songs, such as Boris and Your Blessened, but the drums sound like shit. Awful production.
Eggnog: 8/10. awesome album.
King Buzzo: 6/10. i think the idea was good, but i dont think the solo eps are essential.

I mean, it's completely subjective. Compared to most other records, I'd probably rate the Crover album above them, I am rating in the context of the Melvins. Meaning, after seeing what the Melvins can do, I judge them by higher standards.

When I first listened to Colossus I thought it was the best thing I'd listened to for ages. I still play it alot, especially after a gig or a night out. It builds up massively and explodes at the end - I love that kind of thing. A huge great orgasm after 30 minutes of foreplay. Eye Flys was the first Melvins song I ever heard (someone bought me Gluey the year it was released) and so it remains one of my favourites. Colossus is just a big, beautiful Eye Flys, isn't it? I'm gonna listen to it now, talking about it has got me horny.
Chicken Switch sounds like a lot of people ruining brilliant songs to me. I was never a big fan of electronic twiddly twiddly (except with Tangerine Dream/Faust/Amon Duul/Cluster/Eno - but that was in the 70s when I was a teenager) and I'm generally sceptical of keyboards in rock music (there are exceptions), so when I hear computers and keyboards messing with the music of my favourite band it makes me mad-like-a-Mister-Gumby-out-of-Monty-Python-mad.
I'm glad there are people who love Chicken Switch (Buzz et al included) but its just not for me.

Chicken Switch wasn't on the list but you're absolutely right, it's fucking awful!
obviously i respect your opinion Jules,i'm just curious to know why Colossus Of Destiny got a 10/10 and Chicken Switch is awful..probably because the Melvins aren't directly involved with CS?or maybe because of that Eye Flys version at the end of COD?
The Eyes Flys version at the end completely saves it. If the Melvins wanted to piss off their fans, they would have cut off the end of eyes flys, right before the 'big payoff' part of that song.

Im with Shatz...the 45 is the best. I always thought they were different recordings until I read on here that Buzz just re-tracked the bass line for Houdini and it was re-mixed. (I then played them both on 2 turntables at the same time to confirm this!)I like Joe's tone, its all dirt where as on Houdini they mixed the distortion track and the clean track side by side...and there's too much clean bass if you ask me. I also think the overall mix on the 45 was better.

That's a good point there. It is difficult to rate an album by any band in any true terms. I don't think you can ever separate the personal from an evaluation. It's always going to be subjective taste. That and an internal sense (rightly or wrongly) of how a person feels about Melvins too. By that i mean what we think they stand for as a band or what they would "normally" produce. A 10/10 is hard to quantify. For myself i just see it as "do i love EVERY single song on this album?" If the answer is no or almost then it can't be a 10/10 for me. It's silly to rate but always a bit of good fun. Nothing more really.

most of them fuiin suck, exept Houdini, nude with boots, and some a Senille aminal. although fucin spreadeagle on houdin amost ruins the album, so I always remember to take it off my ipod. 10 mins of stupid noize an shit? WTF?! ruins my vibe when I exersise, man. but those lyrics man, all of the melvin's suck chicken ball. don't even make sense. chop suet makes more frigkin sense. like the stuff on dose^ albums tho.

There was a vote right before The Bride Screamed Murder came out. H.A.T. won with Lysol coming in second. I remember voting for H.A.T. at the time but would probably vote for Nude With Boots if we voted again.
There was an issue of CMJ where Buzz, Dale, and Kevin reviewed all of their records. I think the first Jello album had just came out. They mostly gave 6 out 10's to fan favorites like GPT, Bullhead, and Houdini while giving 10's to Lysol, Prick, Stag, Honky, The Maggot, The Bootlicker, CoD, H.A.T, and PORTE. It's worth hunting down if you can find the interview.

Early years:
Mangled Demos from 1983 6/10 - Early Melvins were straight up, fast hardcore punk sounding a lot like a mix between the Zero Boys and GBH. Outside of some standout tracks like "If You Get Bored" and "Forgotten Principles" this really doesn't stand out much from a million other similar sounding bands of that era. "Set Me Straight" and "Matt-Alec" show a glimpse of the slower, heavier sound the group would develop off of.
6 Songs/8 Songs/10 Songs/26 Songs 7/10 - Heavy, raw, grungy metal-punk. Some quality material but they were just getting started at this point.
Gluey Porch Treatments 9/10 - "Eye Flys" is one of the best opening tracks. Beginning with a slow, repetitive bass line with guitar feedback slowly creeping in until the song finally kicks in. The whole album is dirgy, heavy rock blending both metal (Sabbath, Venom) and punk (Flipper, Black Flag) to create a unique style.
Ozma 8/10 - Very similar to Gluey Porch except much weirder. Very unique timing and structures. The drums on here are impressive. Dale Crover is one of the greatest and most underrated metal/punk drummers and this is the album it really starts to show.

Bullhead 10/10 - The Melvins developed their own unique sound but this is where they first began to really hone their craft. "Boris" (the Japanese band, Boris is named after this song) is a sludge masterpiece. With the guitar tuned down to drop B (I think), the same slow riff is played a ridiculous amount of times but somehow doesn't get old. This record has weird timing and structures similar to Ozma but the songs are more developed. Mostly heavy sludge with a few moments of hardcore punk and experimentation. "Its Shoved" is upbeat and funky.
Eggnog 9/10 - The first couple songs are sparse, feed back drench, heavy and weird punk. The third is dirgy metal with a collage of some TV preacher at the beginning. "Charmicarmicat", the fourth and final track is slow and obscenely heavy, clocking in at nearly 13 minutes. Put it on if you want to scare people out of the room.
Lysol (aka Melvins) 8/10 - Early drone metal. I don't know who invented drone metal but it may have begun here on the first two songs. Following up are covers of Alice Cooper and Flipper and then one more original. If you like Sunn 0))) and Earth check this out.
Major label years
Houdini 9/10 - Bands who were friends of and inspired by the Melvins, like Soundgarden and Nirvana blew up and became darlings of commercial radio and MTV back when they played music videos. The style was called grunge and it owed a lot of debt to underground bands like the Melvins so the Melvins got a major record deal for three albums before being dropped. Rather than trying to appeal to the record buying public, the Melvins just kept being the Melvins. Houdini is full of just great, straight ahead Melvins-style songs with a few more experimental track near the end. Definitely one of their better albums and a great place to start. "Honey Bucket", "Hooch" and "Night Goat" are essential tracks.
Prick 3/10 - This wasn't on a major and is a more experimental record with sound collages and inside jokes. I think I remember an interview where King Buzz said if you don't like this album then you're an idiot and don't understand their music or something to that degree. I think they would do some better experimental stuff down the road but to my ears this one's not so hot.
Stoner Witch 8/10 - Starts off with some straight ahead heavy rockers then gets a bit weirder in the middle with songs like the Tome Waits-ish "Goose Freight Train". Towards the end a few stellar drone metal jams and a couple experimental pieces. Very similar in style to Houdini.
Stag 8/10 - Last of the three major label records. Here the Melvins go all out in the studio, bringing in horn sections, sitars, lots of effects pedals, moog, bongos, and utilizing diverse styles. Very weird in a good way.
Experimental years
Honky 9/10 - On Honky they bring in the diverse styles but without the major label money to spend as much time in the studio and bring in a tone of instruments. Of the two albums, I like this one better because of how weird it is and probably because when I was younger I smoked lots of pot and tripped on acid around the time I bought this CD. "They All Must Be Slaughtered" opens the album with a strange atmospheric feel that either sounds like something that would be played in a planetarium or while you are entering Hell. I'm not sure which is more accurate. There are three heavier songs but the rest sounds like either Pink Floyd (after Syd Barrett but before Dark Side of the Moon) or Ween (the Pod or Pure Guava).
Singles 1-12 5/10 - The Melvins put out a 7" record with one song on each side once a month for a year then the following year release a double CD with all the tracks. This is a mixed bag of rare, unreleased, covers, live, and alternative mixes. I really like about half of this and the rest is just OK.
The Maggot 9/10 - The first of a trilogy of CDs put out at the same time. This one showcases the Melvins heavier side. So it is all down tuned metal and punk. Not a bad song on here and has both straight ahead and weirder songs.
The Bootlicker 8/10 - This CD shows off their more experimental side. There are no distortions on the guitar and none of the songs are really metal or punk. The stand out track, "Let It All Be" is chill fuck and sounds like they were listening to some Curtis Mayfield. The majority of the album borders of "indie rock" but is too weird for the squares that listen to that crap. Hearing some early Pink Floyd and early Funkadelic influences in here but I could be wrong. Hard to describe. Melvins but not playing metal.
The Crybaby 6/10 - The last CD in the trilogy is where they collaborate with a different musician on every song. There are some really cool songs on here but it is the weaker of the three. Standouts are Melvins covering classic country with Hank Williams III, doing a stoner metal ballad with industrial rock, pioneer, Foetus, and doing some punk with the singer of Jesus Lizard.
Electroretard 6/10 - Half the album is remakes of their older songs but with weird keyboard parts. The rest is cover songs including the punk classic, "Youth of America" by the Wipers and the instrumental "Interstellar Overdrive" by Syd Barrett-era Pink Floyd.
Hostile Ambient Takeover 10/10 - This is by far my favorite album with Kevin Rutmanis (bass player from the Cows who started with them after they got dropped by a major and ended with them shortly after this album). Great sludgy rockers and sound way different than anything they've done before and lots of noise, drum solos, and experimentation. Noisy feedback courtesy of not just the Melvins, but Sir David Scott Stone and the guitarist from Tool. One of their best albums.
Big Business years
(A) Senile Animal 9/10 - Rather than simply finding a new bass player, the Melvins recruited the bass/drum stoner rock duo, Big Business to join them. For the first time the Melvins not only have two drummers but start using vocal harmonies. The first album with Big Business is their best. Sandwiched between the sludgier songs are some straight ahead metal-punk similar to their first few albums. A must listen.
Nude With Boots 6/10 - Good album but sounds like mostly songs that weren't good enough for the last one. That is, besides the two openers which are two of their best songs of this era. The rest is still good but doesn't stand out.
The Bride Screamed Murder 8/10 - Starting off with a military cadence, oddly enough, the majority of the album is all killer no filler. Some of their heavier stuff with some interesting riffs, lots of cool drum parts, and vocal melodies much like Senile Animal except more sludge metal and less punk. The album ends with a sludgy version of the Who's "My Generation" and a traditional Irish ballads to showcase the vocal harmonies. Very odd but very enjoyable.
The Bulls & The Bees 6/10 - This EP continues the sound of the other Melvins albums with Big Business. Good straight ahead sludge metal//stoner rock with some moodier, atmospheric parts.
Lots of bassists years
Freak Puke 8/10 - Features Trevor Dunn of Mr. Bungle on stand up bass. No, not to pay rockabilly (thank god) but to play jazz. These are still heavy Melvins songs but with a slight jazz and psychedelic bent. Think electric era Miles Davis being injected into their sludge metal/weird punk sound. Not a bad song on here. Mostly heavy and weird with a few more chill, psychedelic parts and a Paul McCartney cover. This line-up recorded and toured as "Melvins Lite"
Everybody Loves Sausages 5/10 - Each song is a cover song and a collaboration with a different musician so you have them doing Roxy Music with Jello Biafra (Dead Kennedys) and Venom with the singer from Nuerosis. I, mean, it is a fun album but not essential.
Tres Cabrones 9/10 - So on the demos before their first proper albums, like the straight ahead punk stuff, they had a different drummer and Dale Crover was not in the band. Around this time they brought him back and had Dale play bass to do sets of Melvins stuff from their punk days billed as "Melvins 1983". This album finds them releases an album of mostly new material as "Melvins 1983". Instead of playing in their punk style on these new songs, they play weird sludgy metal like modern Melvins. The result is surprisingly good. Surprising because Dale is such a good drummer and makes Buzz's offbeat playing work. Somehow this works too and actually sounds very unique while not really straying far from their sound. Lots of layers of guitar give this an atmospheric feel behind the heavy riffage. They throw in some goofy novelty songs and some old punk tunes to lighten the mood and the result is one of their best albums.
Hold It In - 7/10 - OK, so this is a Melvins album not as collaboration album (I chose not to include their collaborations with Jello biafra and Lustmord because it seems like separate entities) but this features not one, but two members of the Butthole Surfers. The bassist on the whole thing and the guitarist on some of it. The end result is some new Melvins classics that sound like the Melvins like "Bride of Crankenstein", a couple southern-tinged stoner rock songs, and a couple poppy indie songs.
Basses Loaded 7/10 - On this album, they bring in a different bassist for each track. Well, actually, the same bassist plays on two or thee tracks at a time but still. This includes their bass few bassists as well as the bassists from Redd Kross (who would go on to play on their next couple albums and possibly beyond) and Nirvana. This may be a gimmick or may be that they just don't have a permanent bassist at this point. I don't know. The end result is a sold album of trippy, weird sludge metal/stoner rock. Not a band song on here and the musicianship is top notch but doesn't stand up to some of the previous work. With that said, they have set high standards.
A Walk With Love and Death 8/10 - Double album. One record is straight songs, the other sound collage and experiments. The straight up songs are moodier and darker than usual with the guitar mixed lighter with less distorted tones to highlight the bassist from Redd Kross playing, Dale's sparse, jazzier drummer, and Buzzo's moodier, less aggressive vocals. Still a heavy rockers but primarily a different sound like a more mature, improved upon take on Bootlicker. "sober-Delic (Acid Only)" is the highlight. The other half which is collages and what not is like Prick, only listenable. Like they finally made that style work.
Pinkus Abortion Technician 7/10 - Features both the bassists from Redd Kross and Butthole Surfers playing at once. They found themselves with two bassists so they kept them for this album and subsequent tour. Opens and closes with Butthole Surfers covers. In between are songs where the whole band takes part in the writing and vocals. With Pinkus from BH Surfers taking lead on the stand out track "Don't Forget to Breath" and a hard rock one later and Steve McDonald Redd Kross) taking lead on the power pop of "Embrace the Rub" which I heard was written for his punk band, OFF! but sounds like Cheap Trick playing hardcore (which is a great concept). They do a Beatles cover which I love (actually a cover of Moving Sidewalks covering the Beatles). Dale takes lead on a couple of these and they don't sound like the Melvins, more like neo-psychedelic. He did a solo record that has songs like these soon after.
9-10 = Amazing
7-8 = Great
6-7 = Really good
4-5 = Decent
3-4 = Meh
1-2 = Not so good
0 = Terrible

I'd say give Bulls and Bees some more spins and count Pigs of the Roman Empire as essential. It's about as big a part of their discography to me as Egg Nog, which is saying a lot.
Also Colossus is much an album as Prick.
I'm finally getting some proper enjoyment from The Bulls And The Bees album. Giving it the attention it deserves.

I'll put on Love as an end-to-end experience. I'm convinced that it's not random for randomness's sake. There are a lot of noise records and sound collages in the world, but very few that make a cohesive work. It's like an abstract expressionism thing but with a dream logic narrative. Or it's half way between The Crybaby and Colossus of Destiny.

Interesting. I'd say Love is much, much closer to COD than The Crybaby. Yet i think you have perfectly expressed something there that i have also felt with that half of the album that I never quite consciously considered. I agree with you that it does feel like a narrative but one that is not clear. Yet also in a weird manner DOES feel clear. I never considered the album to be random noise. With this and COD, i think there is intentional building going on. A purposeful flow and meter to what is happening. It's all woven together well to my ear. It's just something i don't reach for very much. Yet oddly now talking about it, i immediately want to go back and listen to it again!
The story of Colossus of Destiny in my mind will always be "we kept playing the noise intro to Eye Flys for longer and longer on tour. So we decided to take it to its absurd and extreme end. This involved keyboards and samples and our good friend Adam and a somewhat hostile audience." The Endless Residency tracklist generally confirmed this for me.

I go back and forth on it. Part of me respects and loves that the band are pretty productive. That they put out whatever they feel - an almost scattershot approach where some is gold and some might be much less so. Yet another part of me prefers bands that are very consistent. Bands that may put out a new album only once every 4 years or maybe longer than that and yet each one is an impressive, solid body of work. Often i find myself wishing Melvins were more like this.
I remember Tarantino saying about directors filmographies that one bad movie takes four more good ones to readdress a directors perception. I think bands are somewhat similar. Yes a great band can put out a number of great releases but if they have 1 or 2 stinkers it REALLY brings down the overall perception of the band. At least to me anyway. In an ideal world a cool band would make home run after home run. 5 amazing records trumps 20 variable efforts in my book.
