trust me, if they sold anywhere near 50,000 per on Atlantic they'd still be signed there.

Buzz claims that Prick sold 10,000 copies back in 1995.  Plus with Kurt's name on Houdini it really wouldn't be surprising if they sold 50,000.   I always thought that they got dropped from Atlantic because Stag didn't sell very well and they didn't like Buzzo's idea for Honky.

I feel really sure that I read that Houdini sold 50,000 copies and now it's gonna drive me crazy until I find it again.  Damn it! :x

It's also worth noting that Buzz may have been lying.

Hahaha I'm checking my archives for the 10000 quote as we type.

Houdini was released in the days before downloading. 50000 units was not considered great.  They were hoping Melvins would be another Nirvana or Pearl Jam selling closer to a million units per album.

(the) Razor

Weren't they signed for three albums before any releases anyway?

Collective Soul were signed onto Atlantic around same time, as were plenty of other "Grunge" bands....but they remained with them until early 2000's. They were never exactly as big as Pearl Jam or Nirvana but they were way more accessible than Melvins. I reckon that's probably the difference.

Atlantic probably heard demos of Honky and thought....no way we're going to sign them up Melvins for another album and release this shit.

I interviewed Buzz and Dale 2006 and asked them:

Grampo: How many records do you sell?

Buzz: Depends. We sold most records when we were on Atlantic.  "Houdini" is probably the biggest one. USA: 180.000, Europe: less. European record sells are always less. I don

all of them.

MELVINS are career musicians.
they both have mortgages (I assume) and dale has 2 youngins to raise now.  good news for us. the $ needs to keep rolling.    at this point I wouldn't lie in bed and worry about MELVINS ground zero a whole lot.   the legacy will continue.

thanks,i was wondering about that because remember reading an interview where Buzz or Dale said they've been lucky to have generous wifes for a certain period of their career, when they couldn't live only through the band.don't know if they were joking though

And when did that interview take place, late 80s or something?

can't remember that unfortunately and can't find the interview.i think the period of their career they were referring in the interview was later than the 80's though.is it possible in your opinion they had some difficulty living only through the band for example during the Lysol/Eggnog era?

Totally, I would say it's a miracle they survived.

I think I read somewhere where Buzz stated Mackie made more than he did. How much more, I have no idea.

Not only that, but I think they enjoy both recording and touring, so even if they were set for money my guess is that they would continue...
