Will it come with a free car?

No, probably just a cool ass punk window decal to put on your new Scion ... Hey maybe Melvins can become the house band at the Hot Topic too ... that would be totally fucking awesome! I think I just threw up a little!

What would be wrong with that? Especially when the traditional methods of releasing and distributing music is on dire straits. You want Melvins music readily available in a tangible form? Then shed the elitist attitude. Nothing wrong with making money. Nothing wrong with making sure that you do what you can to remain profitable. Nothing is free in this world.

Nothing wrong with an elistist attitude ... years ago I didn't get into "punk" and/or "alternative", "indie" (whatever the kids are calling it) and their unique social circles/sub cultures to be a populist ... I did it to get away from "THEM". Those idiots at school, work, ... everywhere ... the mainstream ... but then someone(s) figured out they could make a buck off of selling the secrect handshake ... now my neighbours 6yr. old kid has a blue mohawk.

As for the traditional models of release ... if I can't have faith in a Music Co./Record Label to release music ... I have even less faith in a car company ... or Coke a Cola, or whoever else is stepping up to the plate to milk off muscians, music, and it's culture.

Trust me they aren't releasing music cause they "dig it" they are doing it 'cause they think they can make a buck off it ... same old story ... different corporation.

When Magrudergrind released their latest via Scion it featured at big 'ol SCION logo ... right on the front cover!

Nothing is free in this world ... 'cept Scion releases ... and shows ... only stregthing the already cheap ass relationship most people have with the music they claim to love.

If it was a different band I would agree, but Buzz has pretty capitalist/conservative views regarding making money so it doesn't surprise me so much that he would be okay with doing something like this. Or maybe it's "punk" to support large corporations now that most people know they are bad? Individual ethics > Hive ethics. The Melvins don't have any obligation to have a certain political viewpoint because they are associated with a certain scene, even if it would make us feel better knowing they were on "our" side. They aren't in their twenties anymore living in shitty apartments and shooting heroin... if you don't like it then don't follow their example. But yeah, the whole steady mainstreaming of punk does make me a little sick as someone who wasn't even "there" at the movement's peak. Or is the peak still yet to come?

Your opinion is misguided for several reasons. Here are a few.

(1) Music is a business. Regardless of the level at which it operates be it mainstream, indie or punk or do it yourself, it's a business. In other words, your secret handshake is no secret, it's the same handshake all around only with slight variations.

(2) Yes, they are releasing this to make money albeit indirectly. Melvins themselves are not going to help sell vehicles. However, you are correct in stating that in the greater picture their support of the arts is motivated by the desire to increase their profit margin regardless of it's outcome (successful or not).

(3) They do release it because they dig it. If they were only in it for the money, they would have chosen a far more popular and recognizable band. Associating yourself with the Melvins will not increase your profit margin.

(4) You live in a platonic idealist dream world that is in no way connected to the empirical reality of the society you live in. Free, independent music does not exist -- it's a myth individuals like yourself cling to in the hopes of escaping a society you reject. Unfortunately, this is just as conformist as the 12 year of girl that wears Justin Bieber shirts and goes to his concert. The only difference is that you lie to yourself and you believe this lie because it is the only way in which you can accept to live in the society you so despise. In other words, your false rebellion is a conformism of a different color but a conformism nonetheless.

Hail, not fail.
PS:  fuck him.

(((O)))

Personally im not too bothered who releases it. It could be Disney and as long as the band have 100% creative control i'd be happy.

fraxs

This is awesome.
It's sorta like Jagermeister. I know several bands sponsored by them and they get FREE merch to SELL.

I know Jager seems to make more sense than Scion, but at the end of the day:
"The band has full artistic control of its product, and with Scion's money it has also been able to make music videos, something that he said his band had rarely had the budget for."

Sounds like a pretty good deal in my book!

Haha ... as if the typical melvins fan can afford to buy a new car.

Strange, seems they got lots of dough to drop on boutique priced merch and inflated ebay flipped boutique merch ...
It's all about setting yer priorities.

Mad Arab

I don't care who sells Melvins music, be it Hot Topic or your "hip indie store" or some kind of elitist boutique label. I'm glad they have an avenue in which they can put their albums out for fans and potential fans to buy. As far as I am concerned they should seek out as many ways to do this as possible.

It's been done.

i only remember them from the crow soundtrack.  now i know that the original picture is of a woman named evelyn mchale, who jumped from the empire state building and landed on a united nations limousine on may day, 1947.  the picture is called "the most beautiful suicide", and andy warhol made a print of it called "suicide (fallen angel)".

also, the actor who played bill cosby's father on the cosby show did the voice of panthro on thundercats.

And also, the guy who did the voice of Lion-O is the father of Kerri Kenney, of The State and Reno 911 fame.

>>>JZS<<<

Scion A/V put out a Spits 7'' didn't they?.....they have cred w/ me........& the Melvins 12'' was a lot better quality than the last fuckin' cheap ass Melvins vinyl that Ipecac Released.

Just sayin'.
