I've never met anyone that identifies as a hipster.  In fact, it seems that the term 'hipster' picks out very different groups of people depending on who utters it, and has no content to it other than as a pejorative jibe, kind of like how most folks throw around terms like "communist" and "fascist" these days.

The whole anti-"hipster" thing really just seems like a tired old "us vs. them" game so common in music scenes, but where the "them" isn't clearly defined and being one of the "us" does nothing but help us feel better and more secure in our fandom.

I'd rather hang out with cool folks than assholes, even if the cool dude has a swoop hair cut and worships Pitchfork and the asshole has the most bad ass Melvins collection in the world.

Rant rant rant.

I think your rant kind of hit the nail on the head.

Hipsters never call themselves hipsters, and a hipster would never admit to being a hipster.

Also, this whole not liking the new crowd that is showing up at your band's show is a very hipstery attitude to have. "Hey, I liked them before everybody else did." Maybe you guys don't really know what being a hipster is all about? Maybe, just maybe you are a hipster yourself?

As for the pics from the show, the reaction on this board is hilarious. So, a bunch of people go out to a show for the night, have a good time and take pictures of themselves, so what? How does this effect you in any way? How are they not worthy to be in the same room as you?[-(
And, who's the real loser here, the one who's out with their friends having a good time, or the one who somehow finds this group of photos on the internet and posts a link to them up for the rest of the fan boy geeks to yell at? Guess where my vote is going. You're a fucking loser if you give half a shit about anything going on with those kids. If you've ever been to a show, you'd know that the Melvins play loud, so you can barely hear anything besides the band, they are not going to be louder than the Melvins. AND, there is never assigned seating, so if one is yelling in your ear, or looking not worthy enough, standing too close to you, all you gotta do is move to the other side of the room.. When I go to a show, I watch the band, not the crowd. Well, unless I'm in the balcony and the pit is going insane, that is fun to watch. I don't know, I guess bitching about everything is easier than just trying to enjoy something. Keep bitching bitches.    :-({|=

I'm leading the way. I've gone beyond hip and straight into pelvis.

You're right, there really is no "hipster" outbreak. As far as I know the term hipster is just some guy that really likes music that doesn't fall into the category of "mainstream". If my understanding is correct, then I think that would make pretty much everyone here on the board a hipster.

As for people in the audience talking and whatnot, it is slightly annoying, annoying in the same way that a person might break out their cell phone in a movie theater and talk for a few minutes. I mean, yeah, it's kind of irritating but it's easily ignored. I don't care what people are doing as long as I see the band and they're not interrupted and I can hear them. I think the whole "oh, they're taking pictures of themselves deal" is a little insulting, but I think the dumb assholes that bring the show to a grinding halt by hurting someone, or yelling insults at the band are more worth bitching about.

Ah come on, I didn't say they're not worthy and stuff. I go to shows to see the band, that's really all that matters to me and in fact I'm fucking excited to see them in September, so it leaves me somewhat amazed to see people who spend half the time taking pictures of themselves and nothing but themselves. It's not like I give a shit when I'm at the show, I don't notice them anyway unless they lean against me... umm, what I'm trying to say is, the point of going to shows is having a good time so how the hell could I be against that? For me having a great time is watching the band. And yeah, I was searching for Melvins photos and found a photostream that said Melvins... etc etc.. yeah I'm a fanboy geek. And actually I've only seen them once so I can't comment on the "hipsters" at shows or anything.. it really doesn't matter that much to me.

Rant rant rant continued.

Everything was beautiful, and nothing hurt.

Centripetal core of soul sojourn the field vibrates to absolution. I climb toward the sun to breathe the universal.

Have you seen the bridge?  I ain't seen the bridge!  Where's that confounded bridge?!

You, my friend, are completely wrong.

They are everywhere, and they are legion....

same buzz after ASA.

melvins will always be MELVINS.  I believe in that statement.   if and when it should ever crumble....   it won't crumble.

Yes sir! Even in their wheelchairs, Melvins will be playing and recording.

rhett E rock

i can handle the Melvins having Nike shoes.  but not hot topic!!!!!!

I don't really think the Melvin's are making more accesible music. I think people here on this board know what the Melvin's sound is. But to most people the music is still challenging to "get". There are a lot of odd time signatures and song structures that make it anything but accessible. I think the accessibility comes from the internet. It's a lot easier to stumble on the Melvin's name, and check out the music for free to see if you like it. And then go to Amazon and order it. Instead of the days where you pretty much had to hear the name through some sort of underground word of mouth, and then have to hunt down the records. As far as 'Hot Topic". Keep in mind that not everyone lives in a major city. If a kid is getting into the Melvin's and can got to the local mall and get a Melvin's shirt to wear proudly, more power ot them.

NWB and ASA are much more 'accessable' than say Bootlicker or Prick or Lysol.

If Melvins release another album like Honky all these hanger-ons will drop like flies.

Dranas

Are you guys serious about the Melvins having shirts at hot topic or was that a joke????

I am the Sun

Joke.  They don't. I looked just to be sure :)

They do carry High on Fire T-shirts though.
