i put on my scratch acid - s/t ep and it was on 33rpm instead of 45rpm. First track Cannibal starting playing and it was THUNDEROUSLY EERIE and would make an INCREDIBLE Melvins cover song.
So thats my vote

Scratch Acid - Cannibal (slowed)
some others
Tom Waits - I don't wanna grow up
Neil Young - Cortez the Killer

I think they could do a number on el espectro or mess by SA.  Ramones covered the Waits song.
I think you're right on the $ with Cortez.  They could give it an eerie dark tone, more so than it already has.  With weird extended slow "solo's" thru out they would have a lot of wiggle room.  I could see them doing it in a similar vein as the bootlicker tracks.

Pulp - Common people

You never know how it would sound before you hear it. A sludgy version of this could turn out quite well. Where is your humour, Cess, must all cover be deadly serious?

(((O)))

Seriously, even silly list pop can sound good in a heavier format? Or am I totally wrong? Kill me if I am, )))(((!

Melvins should do another classic country cover.

Honky13

A duet with dolly?

Working nine to fiiiiivvvve, with dale using her tits as floor toms... Possibly.

No, i think i agree. It's just that 'Common People' is such a horrible tune that even if (and it's a big IF) the Melvins could turn it into a cool sludge number it would simply have to be instrumental since the lyrics are so godawful.

Then again i guess it could be tongue in cheek like this vile cover.  :-& :-&

The lyrics are banal with purpose, but ok, since this suggestion disturbs you elitist music fascits so much I must replace it with another Pulp-track:

This is hardcore.

Don`t you dare question this, )))(((!

Here you have another version of Poker Face:
