ZZ Top is one of those bands that you have to truly know to appreciate.

one might think of Sharp Dressed Man or Sleeping Bag or some other 80's tune as a representation of The Top.  but there is SO MUCH MORE to them.     they're cultish, like MELVINS.  and their hardcore fans are HARDCORE, like MELVINS.

besides.. I can normally always appreciate an act that MELVINS appreciate.

It took me a while before I checked them out, but when I did, I knew it was about time, and that I was gonna like them. I won't deny it helped knowing the Melvins are fans, and when Harvey Milk put the phrase 'ZZ TOP IS THE BEST' in the credits of Courtesy, they weren't joking. I believe on the vinyl of Special Wishes it says 'produced by Frank Beard' :)

Anyway, get ZZ Top's First Album and Tres Hombres, and you should be good to go.

The Edge... there is no honest way to explain it because the only people who really know where it is are the ones who have gone over.

I remember reading somewhere that Jimi Hendrix once raved about Billy Gibbons' guitar skills.

Yeah! Billy Gibbons's former band The Moving Sidewalks opened for Jimi Hendrix in 1969 or something.

Deguello is a good ZZ record as well.

   Damn, you spoiled the surprise!   My copy still hasn't arrived.

As for ZZ Top, I've only heard their first album yet, still waiting for my copy of Tres Hombres.  I recently saw a live show on tv that was really damn great.. the next day I found out I'm gonna see them live.  That got me pretty stoked.
Everything was beautiful, and nothing hurt.

Centripetal core of soul sojourn the field vibrates to absolution. I climb toward the sun to breathe the universal.

Have you seen the bridge?  I ain't seen the bridge!  Where's that confounded bridge?!

The sound quality is kinda poor, and all of the track breaks are incorrectly positioned, and it's very short. But I do have a soft spot for "Fucker Club" because i was at the show!   8)

Hard to believe they were the support band, huh?

therizz

i love it, i know there are boots in better quality, but it has this aura about it that i can't refuse.

i think the recording quality is part of what makes it so great.

rimb

Just thought I'd throw in a link to this post from a couple of years back with some interesting info on this release.

I agree with this.  Boris sounds REALLY heavy on this recording and the whole thing is short and sweet.  I got lucky and found and like new copy on amazon a few years ago for $7!

therizz

exactly. the vocals are godly, dale's drums are CRUSHING. earth shattering.

just listen to the first minute of boris and try to argue otherwise.
