Yeah the two Residency shows last May were AWESOME!.. I have been listening/watching them since the late 80's and that was probably my favorite Melvins Shows ever....

BillyChocolate

Are they gonna have any records left for us?
I sure could go for that Butthole Surfers split....I imagine all the 10"s are long gone..

Some hazy thoughts.  To be continued in the morning after a cup of tea.

Just got home.  Show was hubba-bubba bonkers good although I detected a stronger than usual violent neanderthal quotient at this show. I opted to stand at the very front of the stage in front of Buzz.  A rather well dressed fellow with a video camera was directly to my right.  Well, a good forty minutes into the set some serious "moshing" was going on.  I absorbed sustained forces from an assortment of vomit reeking sewer people for the majority of the set. Said attack, one that harkened back to the invasion of Gold, or was it Juno, Beach in D-Day I felt at that moment was probably warranted based on my geography but not at all was it enjoyed.  Nor, do I suspect, the kind Melvins tattooed fellow in front of me
enjoyed my repeated collisions with his person.

I'm not one for the foul stench of junky's vomit but let me tell you it was all the rage in old Austin towne tonight.  I overheard talk from a couple of shabby hitchhikers, from Oregon, that they'd thumbed many-a ride to be at the special Austin show.  (EDIT) and that they'd scored "Missus Black Girl Sunshine" and it was "G-g-g-g-ooood."  This claim was quickly followed by a sharp wretching sound...

About the show...Tweak Bird played their hearts out and about half way into their set Dale brought out a birthday cake for the guitarist and serenaded him.

More later.  To the water closet, to clean the junky vomit from my attire.

Operating on very little sleep but I didn't have a four hour drive to contend with like Mr. Chocolate.  Good on ye for coming that far for the show.  A real fan :)
Was hoping I might meet The Rictus but it didn't happen.  No boardies did I meet.

This show was bloody marvelous.  They sounded, as always, remarkably tight yet relaxed and fluid.   I've seen these fellows a number of times at this point and am always satisfied well above and beyond.  I should give more considered attention to these men and learn to bang out proper accounts of their actions on the stage but there is so much to behold at a Melvins show it is fairly staggering.

I had the pleasure of meeting a man from the Amrep forums and his young son who were standing in front of Buzz as well. This fellow, I think named Gary, told me he had seen The Melvins 30 times.  Very nice guy and his son was nice too.  I saw a lot of other younger folks at this Melvins show.  This made me quite happy to see.  Perhaps they will start bands.

So the set list is the same obviously.  Highlights for me would be the Deserted Cities of the Heart cover during the medley, the otherworldly playing of Mr. Trevor Dunn in general, Hooch, Let Me Roll It, SkyPup, Shevil.
Trevor Dunn is a kind of jazz contortionist to my mind.  I salute the expert romantic movements with his instrument which I was lucky enough to witness.  He was fairly astride his behemoth bass at one point in the evening, then on the ground with it as if in some rapt union of flesh and wood.

A small note on heroin and her lovers....

I am no teetotaler or "square" and will spare you a full on screed...
I want to re-emphasize the miasma of some opiated thug or thugs' regurgitation which  hung in the air like a malodorous spirit o'er the entire Melvins Lite performance last night.  It would not be an exaggeration to say it fairly well reeked to high heaven of vomit up front.  No wonder Buzz and Dale have filed so many reports of junk and junkie activity during this tour.  Clearly it is a widely used drug. My naivete is immense and splayed before you with such comments no doubt.  But I don't get out much these days.
I guess I've only been passively aware of junkies at shows over the years.  Comes with the territory and all that.  Still, I would say this to junkies, "If you want to shoot the dope it's fine by me only why not, for the sake of  politeness and civility, carry a vomit bag with you?"  Just like that, I'd say it.  Seriously...Maybe Buzz and Dale could print up some Melvins barf bags and sell them with the merch. :-k  Some of these dopers cannot handle their drug.  It's obvious to me this is the case.  Am I wrong or just an asshole?  I don't mean to excoriate these creatures but for the love of Zebulon! What ever happened to shooting up with your rigs on the toilet?  Isn't that how it used to go?  Why, I daresay I witnessed a threadbare wisp of a soul jamming a needle into his arm during the Tweak Bird set.  Couldn't have been more than 21 years on this fellow.  But a sapling he was.  What courage trying to tap a vein amidst all the jostling of bodies.

That's actually quite Disgusting!! I too have no problems with people using drugs, but shooting up in a crowd is about "look at me" as you can get.... :?

My girlfriend and I always try to position ourselves in clear view of Dale from the balcony, so thankfully I didn't get to see that.

Glad you had a great time despite that..I sure as Hell did... And as much as I've  enjoyed  the last few years of shows with Jared and Coady..Trevor Dunn makes the band a whole new performance...

:(  Too much going on at the moment, and too little money. Next time should be better for me. I remember a time that I never missed an austin show. *sigh*

Really disappointed that I missed this show because of Dunn. The videos I've seen from this tour are amazing.

Can't believe someone was shooting up in the crowd. Never seen that. Don't know how I would've reacted, especially if I had a few beers in me. Probably not well.

Feeling like I may have gone a bit overboard on the whole junky aspect.  The show was of the highest quality.  One of the best Melvins shows in the last decade that I have witnessed.
I would love to see more shows with Melvins Lite.  Trevor is really something.

I was simply bowled over by the brazen junk use.  It wasn't something I had seen in some years of going to shows but my attention is typically on the stage and those performing.

I nearly opted to watch the show from atop the balcony looking down on Dale's kit but opted for front and Buzzward at the last minute.  Still, I was very glad to meet nice new people who love the Melvins, something that has almost consistently been positive.  In my experience, Melvins fans are by and large nice folks.

It was really special seeing the younger fans last night.  They are likely at the majority of the freak shows I attend but sometimes I fail to notice these folks.  I am most pleased that they enjoy The Melvins.     8)
