noctrun

if I remember correctly steve albini is the guy who produced the 'in utero' album by nirvana and used too be in "rapeman" and a few other bands

on topic I haven't heard anything about it yet but how cares what that guys says
Mark T.

klump

i was just wondering what shit HE could say about the melvins...  8)

turnacuss

Probably mocking them for going to atlantic. I wouldn't say that the melvins did a bad thing there, it expanded their sound. They moved away from heavy to weird, and its been good ever since.

Leroy

Yeah, the higher production budgets for their albums were definately a plus, too.  So their sound became more diverse, and they didn't get screwed over in the process.  So if Steve Albini want's to be an elitist, it doesn't matter because he doesn't know what the hell he's talking about.

huber

this is an exerpt from an interview with steve from i think convulse magazine (93?).

C- Lollapalooza

S.A- Lollapalooza is the worst example of corporate encroachment into what is supposed to be the underground. It is just a large scale marketing of bands that pretend to be alternative but are in reality just another facet of the mass cultural exploitation scheme. I have no appreciation or affection for those bands and I have no interest in that whole circle. If Lollapalooza had Jesus Lizard and the Melvins and Fugazi and Slint then you could make a case that it was actually people on the vanguard of music. What it really is is the most popular bands on MTV that are not heavy metal.

then there was an interview with Luna Kafe in august 02 where the interviewer brought that up..

You mean Steve " 'recorded (because I am not a producer)' Bush and Page/Plant" Albini? Yeah...indie cred.
Also melvins is gay cuz some of their songs are just noise, i tell you this so you all don't buy albums and find out only one two songs is good on them.

klump

poor guy...stupidity has no limits

turnacuss

He engineers as a job. Its not like he's endorsing the music. Its just a job so that he can

A) Give us his music
B) record smaller bands
C) Tour

But, eh.

blacksanta

Uh Oh, Klump called me stupid. Now I feel sad

steve albini "produced" tad's ep salt lick. i have NOTHING bad to say about this man.

huber

when he did the work with bush and page/plant, as he said in a million interviews, he worked soley with the members..not a record company or managers etc. in which case it's no different to any other small fry band.

blacksanta

I guess that's how he "keeps it real." I don't care who the guy produces, but in all of his screeds he's always offering up his opinion about what is real and punk and DIY and underground and not selling out. I like Big Black and Rapeman (and Page/Plant), I think his "non-production" gives a good raw feeling to what he produces,... But I don't worship the guy, and I refuse to not hold him to the same standard that he has for everybody else. If he holds indie/underground cred to be so important, which he always seems to be talking about in the interviews and articles that I have read, then he has NO BUSINESS "recording" such obvious imitators as Bush, RICH old has-beens like Page/Plant, or one-time indie rockers turned POP STARS Nirvana. I don't care what the label is as long as good music that I enjoy is coming out of my speakers. I don't buy the whole indie/DIY chic as anything more than an "I'm more underground and unlistenable than you" contest. But if a guy proclaims one ideal, but then turns around and does things that seem to be the antithesis of said ideal,...well,

Albini. I like some of his music but anybody with that strict a set of "rules" about what constitutes worthy/punk/underground music has to be a cunt and a dullard. Sorry, he just has to be.

Oh and the MELVINS are untouchable. Albini should shine their shoes.
