If I were there I'd take you to "hamtrammy Disneyland". It's off the map- hidden in a random alley. (On an old polish mans roof and yard!)
And for the record it's not considered a part of Detroit - it's an island inside of the city. A world of its own. Flutter I vote you go to that show over GR. Bet acoustic would sound good in there.

smalls is not downtown.  it's in an ethnic neighborhood.  I wouldn't say I feel 100% safe and completely comfortable wandering around in Hamtramck.  but at the same time I have been to Smalls more than a dozen times and never had a single issue.  it's fairly easy on/off the highway as well.

also... IMO Smalls is more personal.  yes it's hot and crowded normally.  but the room where bands play is roughly the size of a 2 car garage.   

plus.. small's is where you are much more likely to spot a banana.

I wanna say the Pyramid Scheme is smaller. Plus it has a shit load of pinball machines. And good cheap craft beer.

And Stellas is right across from it if you want one of the best burgers and scotch selections ever.

I'm with you on the GR love.   it's probably an all around safer atmosphere.  plus the eating/drinking options are alot better. at least when refering to Smalls as the comparison.  there's a qwik-e-mart across the street from Smalls and a sketchly looking ice cream shop that I wouldn't go near about a block away. and other than that... houses.     but Smalls has grit.  The Pyramid Scheme and most other GR venue's have a high hipster factor.    Small's just feels more like home to me.  I'm scum like that.

not to mention... from my house:  GR: 2 1/2 hours of 2 lane shit drive at 2 am as you dodge deer and possums. 
                                                   Detroit: 1 1/2 hours full tilt 75 mph highway drive well lit.

Smalls does have the Polish Village Cafe, and Polonia not too far away from Smalls that are both excellent places to eat. And there is a bar right next to Smalls called "Bar". Every time I go in there it's like the record skips because it is always filled with Polish immigrant regulars that don't seem to take to strangers to well. It's one of the few places you can smoke cigarettes inside though. Those guys don't give a shit about the statewide indoor smoking ban

But kinda like you glen as far as travel goes, I choose GR because it is only about a 50 minute drive for me. Whereas Smalls is close to a two hour drive.

If you decide to go to smalls and stay in the area for more than a day let me know so I can give you suggestions of what to visit.

Years back myself and two friends went to smalls to see the Melvins. I was an idiot and didn't get a ticket in advance. Sitting outside before the show, sulking, some guy comes up to me and asks if I needed an extra. Thank goodness! I could have hugged him - think I did, actually. Anyway, he only had two tickets, so one friend stayed back and sat in the car. That poor bastard-I felt so terrible. He's from the burbs and that was his first visit to hamtramck, too. He didn't even want to leave the vehicle to use the bathroom so he pissed in a beer bottle.

Oh. There's a great Bollywood video store full of weird stuff and porn on VHS across the street that I highly recommend. I think it's called KING VIDEO.

Yeah, there in person it was LOUD. In my videos I was way in the back because it was so loud. Could also be that we were basically enclosed in a metal box. They had a metal fence all the way around.

 Would be beyond fucking awesome if Buzz could get added as opener for the Swans show in Buffalo 7/5. As much as I loved that it was just Swans last year, I'd gladly take a condensed set to see Buzz open for them.

I'm sure Buzz would rather be playing than taking two days off 7/4-7/5. Maybe he'll show up to here to see Swans? Promoters here suck. Since it's the 4th, big summer party night, I'm guessing no club has the balls to book Buzz.

Hammy ain't that bad. Yeah, kinda sketchy seeming maybe, maybe not; maybe more salt of the earth I'd say? I donno, not like I really hang for too long ... roll up close-ish to show, hang a bit, show, hang and shoot shits for a few after curtains, split ... I've never had a problem of any kind and never felt intimidated or freaked out at all. Never seen the "disneyland" but have cruised 'bout the neighbourhood a fair bit in order to burn some pre-show and post-show doobies and whatnot ... never any hassles. Small's isn't the only place I've seen shows in Hamtramck over the years and yeah I've never had anything but good times.

When walking 'round we saw Dale getting two scoops there, can't be that bad. That qwik-e-mart is a trip ... it seemed like "Fear & Loathing" in there ... or maybe it was just me.

The venue kinda sucks too. It's always hot as shit in the place and the ventilation is horrible.

Yup, Smalls' is hot, crammed, and stuffy ... but as Glen says' "it's got grit" ... it's fine by me ... small, easy going, always sounds good in there and Melvins always seem to pull a real hot shit show there ... always seems they're diggin' it and having fun ... don't dig Smalls' as much as St. Andrew's (which also got grit) but yeah it's probably my second fave place outta all the places I've seen shows the last 10 or so years in Motown.

I've been to a few shows in GR over the years (never the one Jozzy mentioned) but yeah, Detroit's closer and an easier drive and more fun.

Well looks like i'm driving to Detroit, Geln is it safe around smalls? i don't wait go get dead.
