I hate to be negative but it's been bothering me for a while now. Freak Puke could have sounded so much better too. 

And *I* hate to ask...but the question is now being begged for an answer as to Who what where when and why and how this Freak puke Record didnt meet your expectations of sound, what ARE your Expectations and have you the credentials and pre-requisite to define Mastered Sound pressed to Modulated Vinyl Grooves Vs.  Digital Pulse Code Modulation. let a lone evaluate a Stereo based on Numbers alone, where you can Close your Ears, eyes and most importantly your mouth to know what your getting in terms of Frequency count.

The comment doesnt really hold anything to back it up with..could you please elaborate more specifically on what *could* have sounded better and why etc..please.

Because I cant really give a full response to express that I dont share this oppinion of this particular album until I have some specifics and Details.

but this is now off topic and arbitrary.

The album was good, why...I will tell you why,...because the band said so! and you Still Bought it.

Thats about the only worth of anyones negative oppinion on the Album, I think about 15 Bucks worth of *Bother*  doesnt add up to much on my side of the argument against the bands decision to make the Albums sound the way they want them to sound.

Play around with your Stereo until you like what you are hearing...its got Cut and boost designed to amplify what characteristics you arent hearing enough of.

Theres a million different ways to Play the same CD, I want to see what your stereo looks like for that matter...that might be your problem man, either that or It might be your hearing is damaged from Loud Concerts. 

But please dont get off track while you provide no details.

So overall I love this album. The songs and performances are awesome. The one thing that bothers me is the recording. The records are always missing the high end to me giving the listener a sort of muffled sound. It's been that way for a while too which is sort of sad. I think it bothers me more so with this album because it's my favorite record since HAT and I wish it sounded better. Give me back my high frequencies please.

You know, I actually noticed this too but I just thought my hearing was bad. I find myself turning it up louder than usual to "hear" it all. It does have that dense kinda muffled sound. Although I can't really think of any other release that has the same muffled sound.

Same here. I lost my hearing after I got nudged in between dale and coady's drumkit in '09, I think.

Yes, the Atlantic records are excellent.I love testing speakers with At The Stake, its like a stress test of sorts.

Stag has been my yardstick for every sound system I have ever set up.

The Bit being particularly helpful during the process since you've got the sitar intro to check you're wiring and panorama, the bass growls for the low end and when the riff sets in you get a great A/B dynamic.
Bar-X is then great to blow the shit out of your speakers.

Do you really ?  I'd guess you'd see about half as many Melvins releases if this was the case.  I'm thinking the "miracle of modern technology" has helped bring the cost of recording an album way down, such that they're essentially doing it at what seems to be Toshi's "home studio" or portable setup brought to their rehearsal space. 

That being said.  I like the bright crispy sounds of A Senile Animal and Nude With Boots a lot versus Freak Puke and Hold It In.  To me though, Freak Puke has grown into its own vibe with the mic'd upright bass.

One of many great things about the band Shellac is that they do this on principle. I'm usually critical about how albums sound, but I don't have any issues with the sound of the last few Melvins albums. Should they all sound as bright as Stag? No. Could they have sounded slightly better? Maybe.

Sure the records are cheaper to make which is essential in the current music market. I just think music sounds better when recorded to tape. The albums would be even cheaper to make if they just recorded straight into an iPhone microphone and they could make even more records if they just put them out as MP3s straight from the iPhone. I would still think it sounds better recorded to tape. Hell - even if they mixed it to tape it would warm it up.
